EA/OA Mass Effect Andromeda includes Day1 Patch, no launch day animation improvements

I'm really struggling to understand how this is a deal breaker for people. Did the bad Horizon animations break the game? Did the terrible voice over in Breath of the Wild destroy the experience?

cheeeeyyyillllll

Maybe because none of those are half as bad as what we're seeing in ME:A?

Played for 6 hours yesterday and Andromeda feels more like Dragon Age Inquisition 2.0 IMO. Loved the original trilogy and this game doesn't have the "IT" factor for me.

The first Mass Effect is a 10 year old game and the first game in the franchise. We expect series to evolve over iterations, not have the same problems.

The faces and facial animations in Andromeda are worse than the trilogy... easily. It's a regression.

Why do fallout 4 and skyrim get a pass though ?

Not saying ME:A is okay, but why does Bethesda keep giving no shit yet nobody cares ?

Ehhh, I'm a huge Elder Scrolls fan and I still really hate the way Bethesda handled this in the last years. It's holding back the games from being really good in my opinion.

Also why I think it's good that they didn't release another Elder Scrolls after the usual 4-5 years yet. Although that still doesn't guarantee that the jank will be gone.

Am I the only one who doesnt care about cut scene issues? As long as the game play is fun I think I will love the game. Not saying it will be but all these threads blasting the game for cut scene animations/ lines appear to be forgetting this is a videogame. Lets take The Witcher 3 for example, if the cutscenes were horrible would the game be that much worse?

I should note, reviews should definitely reduce grades based on cutscene issues and it is okay to complain about them, I just think there are much more important aspects.

If you are skipping this game because of the animations, you are not a huge ME fan though.

So, this is a load of crap.

I'm a huge Mass Effect fan. Multiple playthroughs of all 3 games, all the DLC, all the different endings, etc.

I'm skipping ME:A until it goes on a meaningful sale because of the poor animations, voice acting, and writing. In a story-oriented RPG series where a *significant* portion of the gameplay is spent guiding your character through what are supposed to be meaningful conversations, this level of animation quality and voice acting and writing is unacceptable. This is a core facet of the Mass Effect gameplay. This would be akin to a Halo or CoD game launching with broken shooting mechanics.

Especially egregious given the numerous examples in this thread of the original trilogy being superior to ME:A in this regard.

They don't. Fallout 4 in particular seems to have raised the most complaints for its technical sloppiness in this day and age.

Well, it is a dialogue heavy RPG. Having all of these glitches, the robotic voice acting, laughably dated and broken looking animations tends to be incredibly immersion breaking in what is supposed to be a space epic. I mean, it's kind of hard to ignore even for someone like myself who is still very excited to play it. It just looks that bad.

If Mass Effect: Andromeda was Madden and not a game that pride itself on good character interactions and story developments. I would be able to give it a pass if character animations and dialogue are this wonky as long as the gameplay are good.

But it's not. It's ultimately a game that we'll have to spend a lot of time looking at cutscenes and up close moments with these characters. If I have to look at them that much, then it's going to be a huge problem when things are this bad.

I beat the trial and played the mp tutorial. I honestly dont see anything wrong with the voice acting, Seems standard to me *shrugs*(maybe I have low standards). I can understand the face animation though, although I dont think it is a big enough issue to be deterred away from the game. Gameplay is really good.

I think my biggest gripe with the game is how long it takes to get to the map. Is there just a button I can press that takes me to it? The way I was doing it was, pressing start, going to journal, hitting LB, then the map was there

Fair enough. They definitely should be better given the budget and type of game. I am just more interested in the game play personally. If that is great I think it will be worth the price for me.

I don't really care about the poor animation - but for the love of all that is holy can they please patch the auto/manual save system?

It clearly wasn't balanced for playing on Insanity. Having to replay entire sections in random fashion because the game doesn't let you manually save during "Priority Missions" is a huge oversight, and a complete frustrating pain in the ass.

But do we have to dismiss the positive impressions then?

Lots of Gaffers have actually played the trials and found the game fun and can't wait for the release day. What else matters?

If there's something that's clearly messy about a game, the response to people pointing it out should be more than "but I still like it" if it's meant as a retort. People like games for a lot of different reasons, including games with flaws, or even flawed games. That's good. Just as you rightly say people's observations about problems shouldn't cancel out other people's enjoyment, that enjoyment by some isn't an answer to issues in the game. And we're coming to this in the context of discussion about the game, so this is where criticisms belong.

With ME:A, even ignoring aesthetic issues that have come up, when there are plain issues with [things like writing] in a game mostly about [writing], saying "I still enoyed it" doesn't change anything for those who see those problems. And without trying to sound too critical of an individual, the corollary to that is just that someone isn't paying as close attention to the game. That being said, we're very early in the process of a "consensus" being mulled over, if that even matters. The recent buzz has been exclusively on the negatives because it's being seen in the final version for the first time.

The fact that people are asking for animation patches is pretty crazy. I still dont know how all those janky animations made it through testing. "Hey, this totally doesn't look stupid and silly."
As someone that was a QA lead once upon a time, this is easy to answer. QA team writes up many bugs saying facial animation is broken, and depending on the company's culture towards QA as qualitative testers in addition to quantitative, write up feedback saying it plain looks bad.

A programmer / artist sees the bugs, notes how long it will take to fix them, and a producer sees that, decides the budget, release date, and severity of other outstanding bugs doesn't allow them to be fixed in order to hit required targets, and the bugs are marked "ISV" (in shipped version), or whatever notation the company uses, and the game ships, bugs intact.

Everyone knows what bugs ship. Especially QA. It's only the really esoteric, or those requiring enormous player bases that tend to slip through.

Because:

1) Voice acting in Zelda doesn't is not the focus and there's so little of it, facial animation in Horizon are not the focus but rather monster hunting. Mass Effect is a game that emphasizes on conversation and interaction, unlike those two games you'll spend half of your play time talking to people and as such it's very important here.

2) Horizon doesn't have actually bad animations, it has wonky lip syncing that feels off at times but that's about it. The eyes, head, hands and body look and animate well and you won't find complaints against them. And compared to Mass Effect it's a master class there.

After you press start, there is a "button" to access the map right in the centre circle - and it should be the default action to open it with A.

It also took me a while to notice.

If it's unacceptable, then stop hedging about purchasing it on sale. Take a stand, vow never to purchase. Instead, the threat is always, I will play the game, I just want to make sure the people who make it don't earn any money when I buy it used or severely discounted in 3 months. What a principled stand!

The gameplay looks fantastic and I think I am going to enjoy that aspect of it as well. I am just hoping that it ties together with everything else better than I am expecting it to.

I am blind apparently lol. I still wish there was just one button press to get to it

There is on PC, but you can't press M again to get out of the map and continue playing. You have to press Esc twice (map->menu->game). I know it's just one extra button press but it's super annoying when you're used to shortcuts. At least for me.

The whole UI is a mess when playing with M&K.

It took me hours to notice the map option in DA:I.
If you don't buy the collectible lunch box and full body pillow I'm not sure how you can call yourself a true fan.

It goes without saying that true fans also can't criticize the game because, after all, part of the title of this game shares the same title as some earlier games. It's a new galaxy but the same universe, after all.

Not really a problem. Im waiting a few months before jumping in too.

It's not about having principles, or punishing the devs, but rather giving my time for games that seems more worth it, waiting for the updates to make it better, and hey! You get it cheaper!

Something I wished I learnt with Witcher 3 because I was so frustated playing it during launch that I shelved it for months. Came back after Blood and Wine was released, and is now probably one of the best RPGs Ive played.

There's no good reason for the menu screen to even exist, given there's a tabbed interface for all the options (except save, for some reason) anyway. Pressing "start" should bring up the map screen directly.

Just one of the dozens of terrible UI/UX decisions made by Bioware.

So you gambled, and you ended up rewarding the developer with a full price + DLC purchase for one of the best RPG's you've ever played. Sounds like a win-win for both parties.

This is the most ridiculous false equivalency I've read here in a long time. I've played 40 hours of Horizon and seen one ridiculous animation bug in that time.

By comparison, I played less than 10 hours of ME:A and encountered so much jank and so many bugs that I can't keep count any more.

Why are you so needlessly hostile and why do you care so much about what someone thinks about a video game?

Sounds like this game should have been postponed to this fall.
I saw some xbox 1 fps analyses video and its not good.

What? Have you played the early access trial?

edit: Editing due to your edit. If it's about framerate, yes the Xbox1 struggles. But I have not encountered any glaring issues about the game. The internet is grossly exaggerating the animation issue. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't effect the overall game experience.

I watched the GB stream the other day and my god, the faces in this game are seriously turning me off of it completely. It's this bad. Absolutely jarring.

How did Bioware manage to become even worse in this regard? I remember thinkingto myself when playing ME3 "Well, this running animation is somehow worse than in previous games. Why?" But this is on a whole other level.

This just makes me appreciate the work they did on the original trilogy even more. Even ME1 looks good in comparison.

The ME trilogy is one of my favorites, but this isn't how you reboot and reset the franchise in a new direction. Bioware needed a good showing with Andromeda, not something that will probably have very mixed critical reactions, and be used as comedy gif material.

Yeah im pretty much used to bad cinematic animations in open world games.
The in game animation looks miles better then ME3 from what i saw.

Where is the Dolby vision support

Agree. They said on twitter that the game supported dolby vision but the current build clearly do not support it. And when people ask about dolby vision support they do not respond anymore. Why are they ignoring this issue? There are lots of people with b6 oleds out there that would get a huge hdr improvement if they supported it due to dynamic metadata.

Pretty disappointing. Was hoping the day one patch would fix some issues. Still on board. Jade Empire (and maybe DA2) are the only Bioware games I have really disliked. Hopefully it's still good (haven't played the access thing).

How much of this is due to them going from unreal engine to frostbite?

and to be fair, the BF1 beta also had ridiculous animations but they were resolved pretty fast in the final build.
