Early 'The Mummy' reviews, "Dark Universe is dead on arrival"

vinnygambini

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Despite it's reviews, the film is going to perform much like Terminator: Genisys did - will that be enough for Universal? Possibly yes.

Not going to see a film because of someone else's opinion on it? Stay classy now.
The world we live in......

What? Other people's opinions, especially people I trust/have recognised share similar opinions to me, will absolutely shape my movie going choices.

No one has the time and money to be watching every film coming out. Pick and choose wisely.

If the tip of the spear for a cinematic universe can only aspire to do just OK, is there really much justification in going forward with it? With how this has been tracking, there really doesn't seem like much enthusiasm for this film even as a standalone.

I feel like unless this is a massive bomb, they will continue with at least another film for now as they've already banked so much on this wannabe franchise. If it just does average, or is a minor flop, they'll keep going. They would probably see it as a "necessary loss" to set-up the bigger universe for future films.

An outright bomb might make them reconsider how to approach this universe.

Damn, I feel like some reviewers are doing this movie pretty dirty. I'll wait to see the general consensus of Gaf, but I thought it was pretty enjoyable when all was said and done.

Domestic was always going to be a tough sell - internationally the film is playing well, very much like your big-budget Tom Cruise action-vehicle film. So it really depends on Universal's willingness of committing itself to the Monster shared-universe or not.

I mean we are getting a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow despite low returns at the box-office, so anything is possible when the Cruise missile is involved!

That's how I feel as well.

I was thinking of seeing this on Friday but I guess not.

I saw it last night. Effusive hate for this movie is totally unwarranted.

First 2 quotes perfect example.
If you are gonna live your life going by what other people think/do then enjoy it.

Going by your metric of never being influenced by reviews of what you're going to watch, I'd love to know what are your favourite movies. And how much do you earn to afford to see every single movie without checking reviews?

So far is reviewing better than Batman v. Superman!

Like Wonder Woman, Bride of Frankenstein will save this cinematic universe.

How is that a perfect example? I follow the opinion of critics/friends/family who have proven over time to have similar tastes to me. Tom_Cody's opinion on the film does little to sway me one way or the other. He may have completely opposite taste in films for all I know.

Oh no, if he doesn't go see this film because of the reviews, there is the possibility he might never have the experience of...not having a horrible time for two hours. How tragic.

People have used reviews to judge if they should indulge in various prices of media since there has been media. This is not new, and it's not crazy to have some sort of critical standard for how one spends their time and money.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Two years. Oh boy, at least nobody will remember The Mummy at that point.

Bride sounds pretty different, so it'll either be a pleasant surprise or a complete disaster. I don't think there is a room for mediocrity there. Monster romance with gothic elements set in present day (I presume). Hopefully they're releasing two Dark Universe movies in 2019, just in case 'Bride' is a misfire.

Will it make more than Divergent?

Entertainment Weekly: B-

Cruise turns out to be the film’s secret weapon. He may not be totally comfortable selling some of the film’s jokier moments, but at 54, he’s a seasoned pro at selling narrative silliness with a straight face, a clenched jaw, and a superhuman sense of commitment. I’m not sure that this aimless, lukewarm, but occasionally rollicking take on The Mummy is how the studio dreamed that its Dark Universe would kick off. But it’s just good enough to keep you curious about what comes next.

don't see the advantage of explicitly making these things a "universe"

especially if they don't even know if the first money does well yet. cruise has been watchable in everything i've seen him in as of late so i'll probably try and catch this matinee...i think people are still thinking this is part of the brendan frasier mummy series though

To be fair, Universal is kind of the forefather of the whole interconnected crossover movies idea

I've loved cinema since I was to young to remember. I dont wanna get into what my favurite films are as I dont have all day but I have a broad taste in anything celluloid. I guess Im kind of lucky that where Im from I can see unlimited films for a monthly fee but at the end of the day regardless of that if theres something I wanna see I will see it.

Well its kind of obvious. First post 'i was gonna see this now im not gonna' Second there is someone who by the looks of it liked the film. Shock horror. Apples and oranges
Ive said this a long time but fuck the critics. I dont get how someone Ive never met or even friends for that matter could even think that their opinion could have any influence of value over mine. If you dont like something, in this instance a film that is totally fair you can think whatever you want. But to make a judgement without seeing it then to me that is just ludicrous, end off. Im seeing this on sat afternoon I'll let you know how I get on. But like my opinion should give a fuck right.....

Not all of us have unlimited loyalty cards to some cinema chain, so we gotta pick and choose what to spend our money on.

Aren't we all critics? We all have opinions on films. We might not be paid for it, but our opinions can be as strong and well-reasoned.

If you say fuck the critics, aren't you saying that to yourself?

Might have something to do with it. For most, it can be expensive (or inconvenient if you want it to be less expensive) and there is only so much free time in a week, especially when there are multiple interesting movies out at the same time

Thus you can't see everything, and you have to choose. That's where reviews and the impressions of friends and family come into play.

Yeah it didn't look good in the trailers. The summer blockbusters are bombing hard. Wonder Woman gonna save the summer.

Edit - I'll likely watch this on redbox
