Early 'The Mummy' reviews, "Dark Universe is dead on arrival"

I'm shocked so many people hold the Fraser movies in high regard

There's fun to be had in them and some heart, but they're still kind of... not what I think of when I think of the source material. But at least those had that going for it. I'm not sure WHAT this has, if anything.

75% of my love for that movie is Rachel Weisz. The other 25% is that chair throw.
Oded Fehr, dude!

Think of the median age of this forum, think of what age they would be when the mummy was released, then think of the what age child would enjoy the mummy the most.

That's your answer.

Current consensus at 28% with 31 rotten reviews: Lacking the campy fun of the franchise's most recent entries and failing to deliver many monster-movie thrills, The Mummy suggests a speedy unraveling for the Dark Universe.
Lol @ that consensus. They're really gonna get angry at Rotten Tomatoes over that one.

Funnily enough, I was just old enough that I used to really like the sequel much more than The Mummy. I would have been 7 when The Mummy came out, too young

Nah.

As a Spidey fan, ASM2 hurt worse.

Both suck major ass.

lol I forget some people hated it that much, to each his own. In no realm would I put TF2 over it, there's a lot I like about ASM2 but TF2 not so much... still point taken.

You know it's going to be bad when the theater shows a "behind the scenes please see my movie" trailer.

I haaaaaate this shit, I'm not there to see ten minutes of another movie on top of all the trailers and local ads. It's fucking maddening. I got one of these for Dunkirk before Wonder Woman and while that movie looks awesome I was just like stopppppp

They (the first 2 anyways) are fun popcorn flicks. They have solid action pieces, serviceable humor, and a good cast (aside from the leads the brother Jonathan, Oded Fehr, and the airship captain guy in particular are good). People who hate on them probably take movies in general far too seriously.

This new one has looked like hot, steamy garbage from the beginning. I don't know anyone who has seen a trailer for this and thought the movie was going to be good.

Nothing makes me giggle more than the "professional actor, who pretends to have emotion xyz for a living, telling you how funny, intense and exciting their latest product is" previews.

Also this.

"It's funny. It's endearing. It's emotional. Exciting. Buzzwords. Just a great time!"

Lol at the "it's bekause they wer children lol" argument.

The first mummy has aged very well and it's still a ton of fun even with fresh eyes. And in fact it's also one of the last great movie of that genre considering what came after.

The others I can definitely agree it's more of a nostalgia trip.

The sequels are whatever, but the first film is one of the best pulpy period action-adventure films out there and it fully embraces its inherit silliness in a very genuine way, along with a top-to-bottom stellar cast. It's not much of a horror movie (though I'd argue that it does at least try prior to Imhotep being fully resurrected with the various stalking scenes and how much they get away with in the organ stealing department), but I really enjoyed the direction they took with it all the same.

They first one is a legit fun movie. The second one is terrible and has a kid that was even more annoying than Anakin. I can't remember anything about the third it was so forgettable.

I guess when you look at tom cruise movies and the fact that none of them are straight up bad you realize eventually he had to make a dud.

It's amazing it took so many decades though

The third Mummy got crushed by the hot new DC movie at the time, The Dark Knight.

Funny how things repeat themselves.

The first is an extremely entertaining film. One-liners, ridiculous scenes, funny good and evil characters, you name it. I don't even remember the second one's plot .

So, the point of these cinematic universes is that they'll enhance the appeal of one another and prompt people to see multiple movies. The "halo effect".

But so far we've seen two would-be cinematic universes deliver dud films, and the irony is that these just drag down and weaken the appeal of future films.

I guess Wonder Woman is fine, but when I think about how it's technically canon with MoS, BvS and Suicide Squad, I wince.

I have an excellent memory when it comes to dates, and I honestly couldn't have told you what year that movie came out.

And yea, that is pretty amusing.

I just don't see the appeal of a monsterverse or a kaijuverse. The latter I can see the appeal of a big dumb kaiju wretlemania. I don't see what the appeal of the former is.
