Now I may finally subscribe to Switch online, I'm glad they are finally putting these games out there, especially Mother 1. Still no Mother 3 but wasn't that a GBA game?

It will never come out here because of trans issues.
I understand the excuse, but I also think it would take very little dev work to rewrite that scene. Nintendo knows what they're doing, they've only just began rolling out N64 games in All Star games and Switch Online, GBA games are going to wait, no point in using them to drum up sales when the Switch is a sales rocket ship right now.

I haven't played it but I heard They were integral to the plot.

Someone enlighten me please. What happened in mother 3 that is considered transphobic?

Short version will do thanks.
Short version, there are these trans women called Magypsies. They're all shallow gay stereotypes and wouldn't play well with modern culture in the USA. And yes, they're integral to the plot and show up a lot, though I still argue some sprite rework and rewritten dialogue could change them into literally anything else and keep the rest of the game intact and concise.

I cant see it on the UK store, anyone know when it will be available for us?

It's not on the store dude, it's only available as part of the Switch online service. £18 for a year I think.

oh nice.. that is tempting for all the other stuff

Bear in mind it's just online play and NES/SNES for £18, the £35 tier is the one that includes N64, Animal Crossing DLC and upcoming Mario Kart DLC.

I understand people saying that's offensive, but I honestly don't see a lot wrong with it. For starters I never thought they passed any kind of judgement and they were actually "enlightned beings" of sorts, with special powers. Not an ounce of prejudice. (I might be wrong)

On the other hand I recently finished Catherine Full Body and that game had quite a few transphobic stuff that passed condescending judgement on homosexuality and crossdressing which I didn't feel was cool. So I think I'm not unable to feel something inappropriate, I guess.

I don't disagree, but Nintendo probably feels otherwise when you consider their child-friendly, conservative image.

I never played the full game, but I also don't remember the Magypsies being particularly offensive. There was nothing to indicate they were explicitly Trans, and I viewed them at the time as more of drag queens. But yeah I can see how nintendo would rather not even touch this one with a ten foot pole in this day and age.

I am relieved they mocked up a cover for NES Earthbound. It's a pretty lazy design, but I was bracing for a screenshot like Magical Drop 2 and Fire & Ice have, inexplicably. Triggering my ocd each time.

So, thanks Nintendo for doing it right.

No microaggression is too micro

I didn't know that. So this guy gets attacked for a direct translation...

Article then mentions he worked with Byuu on Bahamut Lagoon. Byuu was attacked online for being trans.

They weren't attacked by the same people of course and conclusions have different severity (thankfully) but in a sense both sjw and alt right have more in common than they would ever agree on. Hivemind behaviour and bullying.

I've been complaining about Earthbound not being on NSO for so long that it feels surreal to have it. Still as fun as the first time I played it, what a gem. Now I can move on to complaining that Super Mario RPG isn't on yet.

Stereotype played for laughs is generally sufficient to offend.

Anyone played Earthbound Rising yet on the Switch? I'm curious if the atrocious random encounter rate from Mother 1/Earthbound Zero was kept the same.

It then you get the censorship arguments and all that. It's a massive headache waiting to happen and not worth it for Nintendo.

It's Beginnings, not Rising, just fyi.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they changed the encounter rate. Many design choices in Mother 1 feel like a deliberate parody of JRPGs and the game was late enough that I can't imagine Nintendo bothering to change it to soften the blow. Mother is a very special game, too bad it's such a chore to play legit.

Started a playthrough of Earthbound having never played it. I do enjoy the charm of the world, but holy shit is the combat a chore. I understand that it's a 1994 JRPG but I'm hoping it at least get slightly more interest with a 2nd, 3rd party member. Thank god for the auto battle button, at least I can do something else during the combat segments and come back to the overworld after.

Once you get the first Your Sanctuary location, the enemies in the area run away from you. This makes it my favorite JRPG from the SNES era alone.

That's where I got to so far, made my way to Twoson and hung it up for the night. I'm not quitting just yet as I've seen a few people online say it picks up during town #3, so I'll at least wait until then.

Tempted to just emulate it instead so I have a turbo button, that made getting through FF7 more pleasant.

It's an easy game and not super long. It's worth sticking with. The dialog is the best part. If that's not doing anything for you, the game probably won't be worthwhile seeing through the end. There's a strategy guide that came with the OG cart. It's available online if you're not already using it. I recommend it to help streamline things.

The combat gets significantly more manageable and fun as you get more party members. Hang in there. The first areas with just Ness are indeed a chore.

Started playing the first one yesterday.
Random encounters every two steps, what the hell?

Also, very, very difficult it seems. Although I can now buy a proper baseball bat, let's see if that'll help.

Good luck. EB isn't a fun game, its charm is in the quirkiness. Definitely an acquired taste, and yes, the first part is a chore.

Entering Towson with just Ness is my favorite moment in the game. Such a massive city, the open market, shopping mall, getting the bike, etc.

Should I just give up and save my time then?
That's up to you. All I can say is that if you haven't played the sequel, on SNES, it's an absolute joy. No random encounters, charming characters and dialogue, challenging but fun battle system and interesting locales that keep you looking forward to what's coming next. One of my favorite rpgs ever.

I started Earthbound Beginnings. I'm out.

This game is way too annoying to be enjoyable. Random encounters nearly every step with slow, thoughtless battles that feel meaningless. It's borderline unplayable by today's standards.

This just makes me never want to play the first one. It sounds like SNES Earthbound minus the fun.
Earthbound Beginnings/EB0 is a game that I can only recommend to people who have already played EarthBound and Mother 3 and loved them so much that they just want more. It's not fun to play but the story is interesting and worth experiencing if you're already deeply invested.

I assume Nintendo has left the gameplay untouched. There exists a fan-made patch that adds an equipable "Easy Ring" which cuts the encounter rate in half while doubling exp received. That's going to be the more bearable gameplay experience for most people.

I wonder of Nintendo could release a SP mode with this hack

Doubt it. Their "SP" modes are nothing but some random size file halfway through the game.

It's basically the experience of renting a game from Blockbuster and continuing off where who last rented the game left off.
