I think Kyle is gonna be pretty bummed out that Rap Rabbit is a KS (going by past Final Bosmans).

Especially with those targets. Someone pointed out they're likely realistic, but even if that's the case, they've been poisoned with previous KS's undercutting them. $5 million for a Switch port?

Yes, we got it on 2 am Monday for me in Belgium, so technically (for me), it's the "next week" as our week ends on Sunday, but just barely. Like I said, it's quite nitpicky and imo not something to worry about (it's not something I ever thought or about before or something that I care about).

I wasn't trying to start a whole thing about this, I was just trying to figure out why he/she (IdreamofHIME) said something about getting it a week later. This was the only reason I could come up with.
I don't have a problem with how everything is releasing and I wouldn't care if I wasn't a patron either. 2 days is 2 days, just like you said.

LOL, me neither, but it's Monday for patrons and then Tuesday for everyone else, which means they're the same week. There's no split from one week to another.

Did I imagine they did a FFXV spoiler discussion video? I just finished the game last night and was searching for it on YouTube but came up short.

I imagined it didn't I?

Rap Rabbit being a crowdfund is a bit of a bummer, but it's also very interesting. I don't think they would have a chance to get funded in the last 2-3 years with all the crazy stuff going on, and at the same time people are severely burned with crowdfunding right now, even more with cult classics trying to be a hit again.

It's kinda crazy they aren't showing any gameplay footage, and while the funding goals are at least honest and realistic compared to 99% of other campaigns, all people see are huge numbers and go "Nope", no matter your transparency (as Lab Zero can attest multiple times.). It's all about the hype and word of mouth.

However this develops, it will be very very interesting and a signal post for future campaigns, I think.

I have a suspicion rap rabbits not going to make its goal.

If it does, it'll be absolutely by the skin of its teeth.

I was thinking the same thing when I checked out the KS. I hope for the fans of those type of games (especially for Kyle) and for the devs it is going to make it, but I would be surprised to be honest.

That said, it has already 5 times the amount of backers from when I checked it out some hours ago, so you never know.

Speculation from my butt but I wonder if the KS goals are slightly larger than what seems reasonable because it's a two-studio collaboration.

it's a really slow crawl. I've had the tab open for a couple of hours and it looks like it's gone up less than 250 backers.
unless this thing hits like $4,000,000 it's going to be a 6 track rhythm game. people aren't paying $40 for a 6 track rhythm game. i think this is dead in the water

Interesting. How did you come across it?

It wasn't the first EZA video I watched. A friend had recommended me them and I gave the podcast and a couple other things a watch.

But I typically don't listen to gaming personalities or watch gaming content much, so I wasn't really planning on sticking with them let alone becoming a patron. But when the FF discussion hit, I really enjoyed it.

And thinking back, one of the big reasons is probably that FFXV is such a divisive game but the discussion around negatives seems to be filled with way more hyperbole than your typical game (even now).

So to see a dicussion on the game that not only mirrored my thoughts (to a degree), but presented them in a reasonable manner was really refreshing. There was a bunch more stuff I liked about it too but I was hooked on to EZA from that moment on.

Put a little time into Yakuza 0 earlier, and boy is that game just fun to play. Walking around then getting into a street fight with random goons and yakuza feels too good.

Very nice BoTW spoiler discussion.
From the perspective of someone who only played 2D Zelda and twilight princess, I like BoTW story a lot, it help that I play on Japan voice track.
Agree with Ian, it's a Zelda story, a very romantic journey.

Yup. Zelda Talk was great. Damiani is a very good moderator.

Personally, I LOVED the story in BOTW. Or at the least, the method with which it was told.

It was very much like the gameplay. You had to go out into the world and discover the bits and pieces you needed to build the story. And just like the puzzles, you need to use your imagination to solve it. They gave you just enough to have the foundation but you had to layer on top of that the story ingredients you found on your journey, not just main story stuff but side quest and world information, all informed what happened. But they left enough gaps that you could use your imagination to put your own creation on top of that.

Like, there were moments when I was like "I wonder if this thing happened with that character" and the game would hint towards it but not explicitly mention it and then later on I'd find another clue which would sort of confirm what my imagination thought and it gave me the same satisfying 'a-ha!' feeling of solving a shrine and it felt so good.

I dunno. I'm not articulate enough to really describe it but yeh, I really liked the storytelling. It was unique and subtle and powerful in its execution imo. I can totally understand not liking it or appreciating it or wanting something 'more' but yeh, I thought it was awesome and different and very fitting with the rest of the game's ideology of just throwing you out there with just enough and then making you discover the rest of it.

I think you described it well and yeah, totally agree. I think it was the best way of felling the story in any Zelda game. I do love the Wind Waker and OoT stories but man, does it feel like it's taking too long for me to get back to the gameplay I went there for.

I wouldn't mind there being more memories to flesh things out a bit, or there being more notes to read for those that want to dig deeper, but the actual execution was fantastic.

I do agree about Ganon or the boss characters could have used a lot of improvement z but I have a feeling (based on nothing but my gut) that the story DLC is going to expand on him.

any chance any of the souls guys will be trying out the surge?

It was an option to be voted on for the group stream tomorrow, but I don't think it's going to win. Maybe it'll show up on a Frame Trap or Don't Skip if any of them give it some playing time.

What's there to spoil story-wise for BotW? There's barely a story. Nintendo took a lot of elements from western open world games but forgot to craft a proper story campaign.

I had wished BotWs story was more Souls-like piecing together lore than it actually turned out to be (esp. given the 100 year gap).

Instead, it has some pretty big exposition dumps because it doesn't actually know how to effectively tell its medicore store. You can pinpoint the exact moment they screwed up too. The exposition dump at the end of Great Plateau took out half the wonder and mystery of the world.

I'm not sure why the game did that but I pretty much checked out of the story afterwards. Not that I missed much imo, given how poor some of the memories are.

It's probably my least favorite Zelda story that I can recall.

I think the world has amazing lore just within the world design, and in general everything that doesn't involve VA is pretty good story-wise.

But the cutscene direction is pretty bad. The (english) VA is mediocre. As a result, memories feel less like rewards and more like a punishment.

(luckily the game's virtues make this annoyance very forgivable)

I don't know how anyone can praise the story in BotW. I didn't expect a good story from Nintendo, but BotW barely had a story at all. For me it got to a point where I wished they wouldn't try to tell a story at all and leave it to your imagination. It did have somewhat interesting characters sprinkled throughout the game and a backstory that competent storytellers could work with, but they did nothing with it. Whenever the game tried to dive down deeper in its story elements, it stumbled, fell flat on its face and broke its neck. I really cannot think of a more anti-climactic ending of a game I loved so much. It really makes me furious.

I feel like that while the story itself of Breath of the Wild isn't unique or particularly enthralling, the method of parsing it out and finding it out in the sort of disjointed way you do by traversing to the spots where the memories are are what make it valuable. It's less praising the story itself and praising how you go about learning it. Then again I was alright with the ending, so I don't know.

I didn't like the ending either and that's partly due to the boss and main "driving opposing force" of the game being completely fangless because the game is so light in its storytelling exposure of that enemy. Huber put it very well.

Despite that I did enjoy what little the game had to offer story-wise, I just didn't like the way it was told or the lack of weight it carried when you ultimately put it back together. The amnesia trope should be prohibited from all creative work from now on until maybe the next millennia. But working with it, having to RP a Link that hungrily hunts down for his memories as a way to care about that world he's tasked with saving, that made me feel good about each of the four main character moments, that made me feel like there was indeed a reason for that hero to do the hero-ing. (Mild character name spoiler)
Mifa's
storyline is really nice in that way and as it was my first exposure to how BotW would handle on-track story, it did make me more emotionally invested in the story it was trying to tell. Link wasn't doing this for Kakariko Village or not even to beat Calamity Ganon, he's doing it to honor his fallen comrades.

The thing is, you have to work and find your reasons to care about the story, which in and of itself isn't really the markings of great storytelling.

Fantastic episode of Frame Trap, some controversy and heated Hottake discussion. Ben did a wonderful job moderating and invite Ian for this particular topic.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Hopefully Ian commenting how Nier Automata would be perfect if it had Bloodborne combat is his peak "fucking idiot" comment for the year and the only way is up.

Being nasty isn't cool dude. I know it's your schtick or whatever, but it's really shitty and is a constant drag on the thread.

FrameTrap overall was good, but thought the Hottake was more like a three-times microwaved leftovers meal. Huber and Ian specifically going on about story and their preferences gets a little bit old after a while.

Playing NieR:A myself. On the third path (~25hrs) and I have mixed feelings about it, somewhere in between. Wanna get through with so I can move on. Combat is great at times, and then kinda boring, especially when it comes to doing side missions which also vary wildly in quality. Story is interesting and engaging but brought down by the game's structure.

Personally, I feel the "Dark Souls ruined video-games for me" outlook is pretty small-minded. It's an outlook that's shared by a large portion of GAF and it's the inability to appreciate some games for what they are. Like, why play games that aren't 10/10s? What's the point when somebody's done it "better" ? That isn't what an artform is about, in my opinion.

I think Ian's point about "[para]- Don't try to sell me your realistic story if you have certain mechanics that aren't completely grounded in reality." is borderline unfair. It's pretty much the video-game logic 'meme' and it's something that the Souls series is guilty of. Thankfully, Blood points out that the series has always abstained from facial animation/character development etc. but towards the end of the conversation, Ian makes the stretch to say that the lack of facial animation is intentional to not let the player perceive emotions? C'mon, man. I love Ian but he is stretching neck over ankles here to protect his favourite games. It's much healthier for games to critiqued fairly then put on a pedal stool and that's coming from someone who's favourite game of all time is Dark Souls 1.

Anyway, great Frametrap but the Hottake, as Karu said was a bit of a recycled conversation and I honestly think it's situations like the one I wrote above that's preventing these conversations from progressing/developing.
