It is a rather funny juxtaposition to make about Edge, their tens are all stereotypical big buck AAA releases, while they're supposed to be the magazine that dares to be different. I'd feel a whole lot better about their journalistic cojones if they dared to give tens to something less known, maybe even indie.

Well they did give FFXIII a 5 didn't they? And this month Cave Story, a game originally made by one person, an 8. I still think they're pretty solid with their judging process and aren't afraid to give low scores to high profile games. It's the same old "different strokes" nonsense really.

Not that I've never disagreed with any of their scores before. Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 both deserve higher scores in my humble onion.

For a game that got 8s from elsewhere a 7 from EDGE really is about right.

This of course also means that SMG2 will be getting several 11s.

That Alan Wake score scares me. I mean, i went from not giving a shit, to seeing the trailers, to being so pumped up, but now this and a few scores scare me. Still i will judge from myself because from the videos and such i have seen it looks amazing.

Alan Wake has an 86% average on gamerankings out of 23 reviews. 80 fucking 6 percent. Why are people voicing concern? That is only 3% lower than both Max Payne games. I know the game has been a long time coming, but Max Payne itself wasn't some sort of perfect, shining beacon in video game history. I don't understand why the expectations are so unreasonably high for this game.

Awesome post man. I really hope the industry moves to reviewing games like consumer products, make a unified list of criteria a game should have and score based on that. No multiplayer? Minus one point. Is the campaign between 8 and 15 hours? No, that's another one down.

If I have to read another review where some idiot just articulates their experience of a game as if it were a movie or record, I'm going to go crazy.

Truth is most people have high expectations, nay, expectations at all, because they're being led to believe a game will function a certain way or provide a certain experience. When the game fails to function correctly or in the way the developers said it would, being let down is the natural feeling.

The best games in my experience are the ones I go in with little-to-no expectations because I put myself on black out, or didn't know anything about it them to begin with. All the PR, previews, videos, bullshots... it's best if people just stay away.

I actually pay attention to EDGE because they seem able to recognize this more than most outlets. That said, how the fuck did they give Bayonetta a 10? That game has was AWFUL design decisions sprinkled in the 2nd half.

Their scores can get predictable at times. I pretty sure Halo Reach will get a 10 from them too, because they found all the Halo game mechanics to be perfect. There is nothing wrong with it. I just don't think they are hard reviewers. Edge does fall in love with certain game mechanics more than the others.

Exactly. I don't think reviewers have a responsibility to represent the mean of all gamer tastes, gamers have a responsibility to figure out which reviewers (not magazines) are closest to their own preferences.
