EDGE: What Microsoft’s always-on Xbox means for PlayStation 4

What would be a huge win for Sony is day and date digital releases of all games at a $10.00 discount. I'd rather buy online at $49.99 then buying at Game stop for $59.99 and trading it in later.

What could be even funnier is that patent Sony took out for suppressing used game sales (which didn't mention PlayStation but more over bluray which you know... Durango is rumored to be using) was licensed by Microsoft but Sony still kept on trucking whilst taking their customers and their money at the same time. Yeah I live in a fantasy land sometimes.

I edited it into my previous post. They'll still be selling new games (and probably more now), high margin accessories, and Live cards. Just because consoles have never traditionally sold for much profit, doesn't mean you still throw everything else out. They're not in a position to turn away money.

EDIT: Not saying they won't be pimping PS4, but you still sell these other items because it's better than the alternative of nothing.
well yeah but it's a big difference when a huge ass gaming company like gamestop is pushing one console over the other in their stores. Any time someone asks for something or comes in to buy something, they can do in-store advertising with posters, they can have their employees drone out why they recommend a ps4 over an xbox.

Anything for the moneys.

So the proposal is that the third party games that are probably being made right now for the future consoles are going to get completely dropped on one of the consoles?

I actually don't care what Microsoft's response would be to this. It's smart business if true. I'm more interested in what Gamestop's response to this is.

This is a publishers wet dream. They'll love it.

They're reading these threads and jerking off it it in the bathrooms.

That said, it's not going to go as they anticipate. So I welcome their bitter tears. I'll save my jerk for that.

I dont have a problem with DD only... as long as the prices are as aggressive as Steam/Amazon/GmG, which wont happen so im totally against this.

Let's assume this second-hand stuff is accurate and not more bullshit rumors - I hope someone makes an Xbox 360-style controller for the next PlayStation and it releases at launch because I greatly dislike the Dualshock after getting a taste of 360 pad superiority and I'm sure I'll hate whatever design Sony comes up with next.

Obviously, I'll buy Xbox The Third for the exclusives down the line. CD Keys don't mean shit to me when the games are cheap but up front, I'm not interested in those steep investments.

I wonder if that could be implemented differently in different territories. How big of an outcry would there be in Japan if it the used restrictions were Japan only?

It could, but seems rather painful to pull off and would really muck up Sony's attempt at making things at least semi-region free.

Sony - thanks to their capable 1st party studios, moderately healthy Japanese market, and strong footing in Europe - can likely get away without doing this no matter how much pressure EA and Activision try to leverage on the first parties.

MS on the other hand likely won't be able to. They're quite reliant on the big U.S. publishers and the U.S. market as a whole.

If this ends up being true I'm going with the PS4, easily. I'm not fine with not being able to lend and borrow games or sell games that proved to be disappointing. And while I have easy access to the internet most of the time, if I'm going somewhere (like my parents house or elsewhere) where the internet isn't quite as reliable I don't like not knowing if I can even play games I bought new.

Can I ask something- What does MICROSOFT get out of this? I mean they do publish games, but not that many?

If and a big if this is true.

I hope we'll see some price differences if the used market goes tits up. Not every game is going to sell for $60 so maybe it's time to take into consideration three different price ranges.

Knowing devs though they'll have to learn the hard way.

EVO hype moment #172 is about to go down on the Xbox 720.

Justin "Marvelous" Wong riding the magic pixel with Akuma against a stacked team of Zero/Vergil/Doom. He gets the hit, X factors, mixes up the second character. It's down to one on one HONEST anchor battle. Justin Wong confirms the combo... crowd goes wild...

Well the thing is New games don't net Gamestop a whole lot of profit, they'd be more than happy to sell you used over new anyday. No one is saying Gamestop won't stock the new xbox, its games and accessories. They're not turning money away but it'd make business sense to show preferential treatment to the Orbis, its accessories and games over the xbox so that they'll see more used games coming back to them to resell

Because it makes zero sense for one console maker to do what "publishers and developers have been asking for" while the other doesnt, and have the picture painted rosey for the former. All without commenting on the complexities and strain this could potentially cause between Sony and those pubs and devs that want this.

If Microsoft is doing this, and I'm still not sure I believe it is, it's only doing so with publishers on board.

It will be viewed as anti-consumer and suicidal unless publishers are willing to give Microsoft a bonus (games) for taking such a monumental risk.

But yeah, EDGE really wants page views today.

I thought that a strong majority of multiplatform sales go to Xbox.

In US. Worldwide it's different story. It's roughly fifty fifty with western publishers if you look financial reports. Europeans tend to heavily favor PS3 versions of 3rd party games.

Microsoft not coming out and denying this rumor is kinda worrying me. If this were blatantly false, why not come out and say so?

They can't say anything since they haven't made an official announcement regarding their next gen system.

Publishers will still be forced to gravitate to the console with the biggest install base next-gen.

Microsoft seems really quite bent on destroying any goodwill the company ever had. Windows 8 was a disaster, and everything I hear about Durango lately is just the same. Ballmer is taking everything into a fucking locked in death spiral and nobody has the power to stop him or the idiots he's allowed to assume top responsibilities.

Also from the way EDGE is harping on, it sounds like they must know the PS4 isn't following the "no secondhand games" route.

I'm more surprised people are surprised. It's Microsoft. What were people expecting? It sounds like the Floridians surprised about electing a crook who stole money from medicare and seniors when he starts doing crooked and dumb things as soon as he gets in.

I wasn't hinting that they would cancel developing alltogether for the remaining platform but something like exclusive content wouldn't be surprising at all.

It takes time to develop those exclusives. Within the first year you could start to see a descrepency in the 5 to 10 million range in consoles sold which 3rd parties just could not ignore. Also Sony has a strong stable of first party developers that won't be devoted to Kinect games.

Maybe it comes down to what's the bigger slice of pie:

People that trade in games vs people that will buy the system where they can play games like GTA and Call of Duty first (or only) on.

Looking at how PC sales have taken off with things like Steam, Blizzard, Minecraft and other top sellers that have no used sales due to DRM... I think MS might win this one.

Wow, i dont know why people are spinning this, if it turns out that ms is the only console to do this the word of mouth and bad press would be damaging. Then your trying to say third partys would walk away from a machine rumoured to be the more dev friendly and all the cash on the table from sales on that machine for the sake of not allowing used sales. I have no words.

I just love how none of these companies take in consideration the crappy bandwidth limits we get here in Canada.

Somebody's going to have to adjust.

I bet you won't be downloading every 50GB game though, just inputting a short code. Shouldn't affect bandwidth at all.

Not saying it's a great system, but it'll be the same as redeeming any online pass or the like.

The idea that you'd have to be online to play an offline singleplayer game though is disheartening. I've had my internet go down numerous times and that would be beyond frustrating. Although, if you've already validated the game online, I see no reason not to allow you to play it without a connection.

Saying anything at this point spoils their 720 announcement of an announcement plans.

Not saying anything might actually be worse. Look at this shit, the rumor's been out for less than a day and Gamestop shares are already dropping.
If the backlash continues, Microsoft's very own shares may very well take a hit.

I thought that a strong majority of multiplatform sales go to Xbox.

I don't have numbers but I won't be suprised if they're close. PAL charts is usually have PS3 titles selling more than the 360 except for the UK and obviously 360 is the king in the US.

I dont have a problem with DD only... as long as the prices are as aggressive as Steam/Amazon/GmG, which wont happen so im totally against this.

And why should they price them low? It's not like they have other shops competing on their platforms. On PC there are more choices and that's why you see these sales.

So the proposal is that the third party games that are probably being made right now for the future consoles are going to get completely dropped on one of the consoles?

It's a ridiculous assertion.
People are blowing the issue of second-hand sales way, way out of proportion.

I just love how none of these companies take in consideration the crappy bandwidth limits we get here in Canada.

The way around it is to allow disc purchases and they come with a code, like current online passes. So the install is off the disc (no bandwidth used) and the activation is server based (minimal internet usage).

That's the best and only logical approach if you want to make it successful worldwide with these restrictions.

Right; they wouldn't do it without some kind of incentive from the industry. We will make x amount of exclusives or something like that.

If this happens, it'll mostly be due to pressure from publishers. They're the ones who have the biggest issue with used games.

Thats what I thought- and MS wouldn't do this unless they struck deals with publishers OR if Sony was doing the same.

Microsoft is making it too easy for me to switch to PS4.. Have both the 360 and PS3 and I think hands down, the 360 is the better system for both online and single player gaming but I am not dealing with having to always be connected to the internet and having to pay for XBOX Live GOLD to have to play online (IF they still have that option, and if they do, atleast give us freebies like PS+) I will happily get both if Microsoft doesn't completely shit the bed on this.

Here's the thing--I'm not like GAF who thinks its all about games. Having a central hub from where you can play games, watch dvd's/blurays, apps, etc...there aren't many devices out there that do it. If I don't have my xbox/ps3 then I'll have to use my pc to access these things...which is awful.

The thing is though we've got that entertainment hub in the form of ps3/360 now. So what upgrades can either Sony or MS bring to the entertainment space to make me want to upgrade? And I'm not talking about videogames here.

I actually don't care what Microsoft's response would be to this. It's smart business if true. I'm more interested in what Gamestop's response to this is.

This is a publishers wet dream. They'll love it.

If for "smart" you mean "disgustingly immature and out of touch", then sure.
You can borrow DVDs, you can borrow CDs, but NOT games, because EA / Activision want you to buy the brand new game at 59.99. Are you shitting on me?

The more I am hearing about Durango, the more it is clear to me that Microsoft has obviously lost their fucking minds.

And Sony, who has always used an ass backwards way of doing things, has now developed a developer friendly system that is PC like and much more open.

I don't even know what's going on anymore.

sony: you can resell all your games on our console!

customer: what games? where's CoD, where's GTA, where's battlefield?

sony: riiiiiiiiiiiiidge racer!

You know that is not what is going to happen. These games are way to expensive for that.

Consumers chose the Wii but publishers didn't follow.

The Wii is kind of a different beast though. There are more factor there.

I think some of you guys are reading this wrong -

MS probably decided to go this way all by themselves. Publishers probably like the idea of anti-used game DRM but they are hardly in a position to demand it. This is a MS move, all the way. They have made some calculation around the idea of having a 100% connected audience, that looks very enticing to them long-term, strategically, and if this is true are willing to try it out with this new box. I'm not saying they are even right, but it's hardly out of character for this company (nor totally unreasonable, in my opinion... I don't like it either, not at all, but I can at least see what they might be considering).

Sony will do what Sony does. They still haven't even implemented* region locking on their last 2 consoles; this move would be seriously out of character for them. Publishers are not going to Dreamcast the PS4, all their balls are already in the air, that ship is long gone.

(ok barely, I think there might be 2-3 PS3 games that have it)

I think the people who say MS doing this and Sony not would be the end of MS are forgetting how important the third party position is. While I do not condone removal of the second hand market (i'm more thinking some profit sharing would be in order), I fear that if one system does this, third parties will either choose not to support others or will twist their arm to enforce a similar system.

Third parties made this generation for HD consoles, and the biggest ones seem to be trying to kill second hand sales.

I am glad they are potentially trying it now though. This is probably one generation too early. Would have been better to go slower and get people acclimated to the idea as well as make sure that more users are connected to the internet. If it fails now it may be done for good.
