Only thing I can truly see riling people up is the absence of the Saturn, which some believe is better than the Dreamcast.

Hmmmm.

I wouldn't argue too much with that list to be honest.

Fair reflection.

All though Xbox owners can sit back smug in the knowledge they can safely emulate over half the consoles on that list. :D

Although it's lucky it's just consoles. Otherwise the C64 would have leapt through the air like a billion agent smiths....dragged the NES's beaten down in a billion man burly brawl corpse, stuck it's head under the water and laughed manically as the American machine triumphed to no.1 leaving the bloated corpse of the NES floating in a pool of megaman sequels.

At this point it will probably stay buried in this thread so not much will come out of it.... of coarse you know some one will post it in its own thread and then we will get another 5 page thread.

i am testing this supposition

Come on GAF, don't let me down.

Wow... GC is "better" than the Dreamcast? I respectfully disagree, Wind Waker or no.

I also don't buy the GBA being on the list... I suppose that it is a console, but I have a different definition of a console.

While the GC is probably the better system when you look at the third party support etc., I personally found the best games on the N64 better than the best on the GC. Guess it depends how you look at it.

Gamecube better than Dreamcast? It's official..............EGM is........ah, i've lost my train of thought

The Dreamcast has nowhere as many commercial games as GC. I mean seriously.. Dreamcast was a great system, but it really was unchallenged in its time, making its library seem much better than it actually is.

If that list was a fair assessment then GC wouldn't even be on the fucking list. Consider yourself lucky that so many nintendo apologists work on online sites Ninrods!

Agreed. On my own personal list, even the 3DO gets the nod over the GC.

Saturn deserves to be on there more than GC, Xbox, or PS2. Really, you can put those three in any order. They all have a great variety of games. But Saturn, Dreamcast, N64...They should be up higher, IMO.

I have a feeling that a poor reputation kinda kept the Saturn out of this list (and out of gamers' living rooms)... but I wouldn't be adverse to seeing it make the list instead of the GC-- if only for what the Saturn could do with 2D.

The N64 below Dreamcast should be debated too. Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time >>> Sonic and all the 2D fighters on DC to everyone but g33ks.

3DO? Be real now. How many AAA game came out from 3DO - Army men? :lol

Road Rash for 3DO was prime stuff. Twisted was rather unique. Slam 'N Jam was as close as you could get to playing Konami's Run 'N Gun without owning the coin-op. John Madden Football looked amazing at the time. Wing Commander III looked pretty awesome, too.

The 3DO didn't get a lot of support, but it had the backing of a few key publishers.

Yeah, but you're still taking the piss abotu it being ahead of the GC, right?

If not...well...I don't know what to say. That would be ridiculous.

EDIT: Was the NES really better than the SNES? Not to my mind.

N64 had some classics. Games that people still hold as the best above most, but the Dreamcast, in some eyes, is a classic in itself. Where the Saturn has the stench of failure, the Dreamcast felt like Sega was going down in a blaze of glory. I think that's what attracted so many "g33ks" to it in the first place, and why they still place it heads and shoulders above others.

I'm trying to think of a single genre where the best NES game is better than the best SNES one and failing miserably.

Except, perhaps, for SMB3 over SMW in some people's mind. But you get an enhanced version on the SNES too, so that kinda kills that one.

Did EGM give the criteria they used to compile the list? Is it based on historical significance, sales, game library, what? I agree that NES and Playstation should be in the top 3 (I even agree with the ordering NES > Playstation), but where the fuck are any systems prior to the NES? In particular, the Atari 2600 should be in the top 3, certainly somewhere in that list of 10 (how can you include systems like Xbox and Gamecube and not the 2600?).

"Even with all the best 2D Sonic titles on the GameCube? I don't understand."

Haven't you heard? Ports suck and do not get good reviews!

no 3DO didn't get a lot of support, and it hasn't outsold the GC.

GC = RE4, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime games,SSBM, Viewtiful joe 1&2 Remake, ToS, Super Monkey Ball games, Paper Mario 2, PoP 1&2, Pikmin 1&2. Seriously, the 3DO isn't even close...

I still hold the NES in very high regard to this day. It's certainly one of the most influential consoles in history, bringing console gaming back from ashes and all that jazz. The games (mostly) didn't require instructions, and the controller (though uncomfortable at times) was simple enough that gamers from 4-84 could play without having to constantly worry about what button does what.

You can argue that the SNES did things better than the NES did, but (in my mind) you can't argue the importance of the NES to the industry... even today.

Don't try to think logic! It's wrong!

Meh... the 3DO controller was still better than the GC controller, IMO... and play control is pretty important to me.
