EGM's Top Ten Consoles of All Time

My list. Also, in practice backwards compatibility makes some of these better, as they assme the prior genertion (Atari 7800 GBA, PS2, Colecovision)-- but I'm going by native library. Rating is by value provided during a system's heyday.

10 Saturn
9 N64
8 NES
7 GBA
6 X-Box
5 Genesis
4 Playstation 2
3 Atari 2600
2 SNES
1 Playstation

I'd put the N64 much higher, and the Gamecube at spot 10 (if there at all). Other then that I have no quibbles.

3DO? Be real now. How many AAA game came out to 3DO - Army men? :lol

Road Rash is better than anything on the Cube. By the way, that's a terrible list. Looks like the guy arbitrarily included anything he could recall. The Xbox at #6? That's a joke. It shouldn't even be in the top 10.

Geez that's a pretty bad list (imo)! o.o;

Personally my top 10 list would exclude these:

3. Super NES (Redundant due to GBA)
When the GBA can play (without pirating) Illusion of Gaia, Super Metroid, Terranigma, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Smash TV, Turtles in Time, Super Mario RPG, and ActRaiser, then maybe I might agree with you.

Though I don't think 3DO has a place in this 'top 10', Star Control II, Need for Speed and Super Street Fighter were all stellar games on 3DO. That's about as many games as I like to play on NGC.

My list

1. Genesis
2. Nintendo 64
3. SNES
4. Gameboy Advance
5. Dreamcast
6. Game Gear
7. Saturn
8. NES
9. Playstation 2
10. Arcadia 2001

Since this has turned into a rank your consoles thread, my list (top 5)

1. Nintendo GameCube
2. Playstation 2
3. Gameboy Advance
4. Nintendo 64
5. Sega Mega Drive (Genesis)

Other consoles are good, but I don't care enough about them to rank further.
Yup, me too, I love all those consoles I listed, I have more but I just don't like them as much.

The list is pretty fair, when you're only considering american games, but honestly I don't know why the N64 is ranked below the Gamecube - especially considering the N64's multiplayer games (with the exception of Smash Brothers) had a bigger impact on the market and on gamers than the Gamecube's equivalent titles. If anything, that puts the N64 on par or slightly below the Genesis.

But I guess you'd actually have to read EGM to understand their views, eh? Not the first time they seriously goofed (like when they redid the top 100 and chose Super Metroid over Tetris for #1).

My List, with some games listed for support:

1. SNES - Tetris Attack, FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, EARTHBOUND, Super Metroid, Star Fox
2. PlayStation - Resident Evil 1 & 2, FF7, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3
3. NES - Mario 2 & 3, Zelda 1 & 2, Castlevania 1-3, Ninja Gaiden
4. N64 - Mario 64, Goldeneye, Zelda - OoT & MM, Super Smash Bros.
5. GC - Pikmin 1-2, Paper Mario 2: TTYD, Metroid Prime 1 & 2

Done.

No lists, though i will say that the Snes was by far my most played, cherished system of the bunch. Random systems i've enjoyed over the years; Nes, Genesis, N64, Commodore 64, PlayStation, Dreamcast.

My list has nothing to do with console sales. I choose to go by how influential the system was, how great the games were, and how many high quality games it had. I chose to exclude handhelds as I view them as..well..NOT CONSOLES. Anyway..

1. NES- Insurmountable amount of fantastic, genre-defining games. Set standards for playability and design that are still in effect today.

2. SNES- Took classic franchises to new heights, introduced shoulder buttons. It's "classics" were slighty more essential than those of it's nearest competition, so number 3 falls to..

3. Sega Genesis- Ushered in 16-bit gaming as we know it an featured countless classic titles. Did much to bring gaming from out of the realm of geekdom and into mainstream acceptability as a form of entertainment.

4. Sony Playstation- Made 3D the paradigm of choice in gaming, and set new standards for quality in console design and production value in gaming. Numerous classic titles.

5. Nintendo 64- Analog stick and 4-controller ports broke new ground, featured several genre-defining titles for the 3D era.

6. Sega Dreamcast- First truely online console with a plethora of fantastic games. First to make use of analog triggers, and also ushered in new standards for graphics and display capability.

7. Sony Playstation 2- Large amount of fantastic, blockbuster games. Standard DVD and analog buttons. Marked a considerably more adult shift in the perception and styling of consoles.

8. Microsoft X-Box- Built-in hard drive and ethernet port. Good selection of quality games, with a handful of classics among them. LAN capabilities made it the multiplayer console of choice for its generation.

9. Neo Geo- Large capacity carts, high color graphics, and numerous arcade ports established a market for premium console gaming and pushed consoles forward. Amazing longevity and large amount of classic titles.

10. Sega Saturn- Fantastic selection of classic titles. First major console with a dedicated CD drive to hit the market.

Cube doesn't make the top 10 because, other than Metroid Prime and possibly Pikmin (who's virtues will likely go ignored by developers of future titles), it's really done little to push game design forward. The console itself is quite suitable, but not groundbreaking in any regard, and I wouldn't say to this point that it has more classic titles than the Saturn did. The Cube to me represents the system that could have easily been smack in the middle or even upper half of this list, but has failed tremendously in its efforts to live up to its potential expectations.

If we're going by how influential a system is or was, then I think it should go NES > SNES = PSX > Genesis and so on.

The PSX is one of the postmarks in gaming history. Even if you don't like it, it changed gaming and the entire market forever.

The top 5 is fine, the list goes to shit after that though. My own top 10 consoles would be...

01 Sega Saturn
02 Nintendo Entertainment System
03 Sega Genesis
04 PlayStation
05 Nintendo 64
06 Super Nintendo
07 PlayStation 2
08 Turbo Grafx-16
09 Sega Master System
10 Nintendo GameCube

....and top 5 handhelds...

01 Game Boy Advance
02 Game Boy/Color
03 Neo Geo Pocket/Color
04 Game Gear
05 WonderSwan/Color

Xbox ranked ahead of the Genesis. Right. Just goes to show how much turnover there has been in the EGM staff over the years. They used to know what they were talking about.

Haven't read the past the first page yet, but from my personal experience Xbox is not better than Genesis.

<^> (-_- ) <^>

How is the GBA so highly rated?

I mean so many of the best games I have on my NES or SNES and have been played to death.

I am not saying it doesn't have its own good quality titles and no I don’t want a list war. Just IMO the library would be very bare without the ports.

hehe, i read the list thinking it was first to last and found it almost correct, minus for psone and supernes.

Xbox should be last on that list. Apart from Halo, Halo 2, Ninga Gaiden, KOTOR and KOTOR2, there are no good games.

The fact that the Neo Geo isn't there proves that the list is innacurate.

Dan Hsu was a huge Neo basher back in the day-- this does not surprise me at all. One of the reasons I have no respect for him.

Xbox dosen't even belong on that list in the overall sheem of consoles, it's to lop-sided. If you aren't a fan of online gaming or a FPS freak, it's pretty weak.

My list wont inclusde the NES because I never played it.

1. Playstation 1
2. Playstation 2
3. Nintendo 64
4. Dreamcast
5. SNES
6. GC
7. Xbox
8. GBA:SP

I put the PS1 and PS2 at the top because of the vast variety of games. It has everything for everyone. At the end of the generation, that list might change depending on how the currnet three consoles improve and i their gaming library gets better. I think Zelda will be a big boost to Gamecube.

We all have differn't taste in games, but as far as libraries go? and quality? my console picks are as follows.

1) NES (Nin stuff)
2) PS2 (because of the PS1 player, it makes it one Bad MO-FO overall)
3) GameCube (add GB player and like the PS2 lookout)
4) Genisis (Sega stuff)
5) Atari 5200 (lol! Small libray, but had Gorf, Donkey Kong ect...)
6) Dreamcast (had to hit the import stuff, but yeap! it was cool)
7) NEO-GEO (This is one badass 16bit cart system with alot of arcade perfit stuff)
8) Intellivision (good stuff back in the day)
9) N64 (Mario 64, GoldenEye and Sin&Pun was the doo-doo)
10) SNES (most would put this at the top, but alot of re-hashing IMO)

This just my opion, yours may differ.

EGM's editors aren't even old enough to remember Atari.
:/ The majority of EGM's senior editors are above the age of 30; Shoe's 33, and Crispin's 32 (don't quote me on these age's tho), so it would appear as though they'd be in kindergarten when the 2600 was launched in 1977. I don't know about you, but I picked up my first gaming controller at the tender age of 4, so it wouldn't surprise me if these guys have played the atari consoles extensively. Don't forget that the 2600 dominated gaming for a good 10 years, giving them plenty of time to give the machine a shot.

EGM's list is decent, but it would've been nice to see the N64 rate higher. It's probably nostalgia talking on my part, but seeing my favourite franchises come to fruition in 3D kicked incredible ass. There are very few games this generation that can compete with the feeling Zelda, Mario, and Goldeneye to name a few gave me. The Xbox should've been a couple slots lower, and the Dreamcast should've been a couple spots higher. Their decision to place the PS2 in the middle of the pack was a good one, and I completely agree with their ranking of the NES.

Every list needs a bit of controversy. Just be thankful they didn't include Atari's port-a-potty Jaguar to get attention.

OH NOEZ, BUT DE XBOX IS liek A PIECE OF DA SHIT! LOLZ.

I love how haters of a specific console will rattle off a list of games that justify purchasing the system alone before saying it sucks, "yeah, lolz, but besides those 200 AAA games exclusive to that system, u know,m it liek totally suckz!!! ^-^ n00bs"

What? Please tell me you had a sheltered gaming childhood and aren't just retarded.
No one in their right mind would include the Game Gear, especially not without the Game Boy elsewhere.

Aside from the PS2 for the backwards compatability and the runaway success, current gen shouldn't be as high as you'd like. The Xbox or Cube library is hardly worth the rank you give it.

Of course Saturn above PS2 is just crazy talk.

Even with those games taken into consideration, the Xbox shouldn't be anywhere near a top 10 list.

Well, aside from the fact that you're wrong, wouldn't your logic mean the N64 and GC(which doesn't belong in the list anyway) should be discounted because they're so lopsided on Nintendo games?

N64 should be #3 (or #4 behind PS2) ... it doesn't have many games but some of the best ever. How XBOX even made it into that list is a miracle to me. And why there is no GB in there is another one. In short: that list is crap.

1. PS1
2. SNES
3. PS2
4. NES
5. Genny
6. N64
7. Xbox
8. Dreamcast
9. 2600 (don't let nostalgia fool you)
10. GC

Saturn and 3DO and Jaguar and stuff fall into the category "Who gives a shit" b/c I never played them much, and what I played blew goats. I place the 2600 above the GC b/c I played my 2600 and its lame games a ton more than I do my GC. The GC has one of the lamest game libraries around. Only a few titles exclusive to the system are noteworthy. It gets up there for Zelda IMO. Otherwise, it's a kinda forgettable lineup, and I own one. The DC's lineup was just more well-rounded, eventhough I didn't really dig the system much. PEACE.

A little late, but here's my list:

1. NES
2. PlayStation
3. SNES
4. PlayStation 2
5. Dreamcast
6. XBox
7. Genesis
8. TurboGrafx-16
9. Nintendo 64
10. 3DO

Although 99% of gamers hated the 3DO, I actually enjoyed mine for the most part. EA provided some solid support, and there were a few other notable games that I really got a kick out of, such as Slam 'N Jam and Twisted.

Xbox is way too high. Mostly void of unique software, I doubt it will have much classic nostalgia sales in the future. The lack of an Atari system is lame. Take off the Xbox and put on a 2600 or C64. Maybe even the Neo Geo.
