EGM's Top Ten Consoles of All Time

Xbox over genesis? Dreamcast,n64 and gamecube?!!

I bought 4 god damn games(halo, halo2, SP: PT, Ninja Gaiden) for my xbox, and i actually have the money now to buy games.

3. Super NES (Redundant due to GBA)

Then what about Dreamcast? Many of the best DC games have been ported to other consoles by now.

Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue 1 & 2, Fur Fighters, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Headhunter, Ecco, F355, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Le Mans 24 Hour. Something I'm missing? Maybe jarrod can help me out. :P
Soul Calibur is still exclusive, but I consider Soul Calibur II to be an improved version of that game anyway. Jet Set Radio saw a sequel as well (although I still hold the original as the better game).

Knights of the Old Republic, Panzer Dragoon Orta, The Sith Lords!

Crimson Skies! The good one!

That's actually pretty much my library (those + Amped [my sister insists on keeping it] and JSRF). I once had Halo, Fable, Munch's Odyssey, PGR 2, Ninja Gaiden, Kingdom Under Fire, PGR, Crimson Skies, Brute Force, and a few others, though.

How does the GBA make the SNES redundant? Wario Ware and Advance Wars....uh, drawing a blank here. I hope you're not referring to all the SNES to GBA ports. Cut down resolution and butchered sound? No thanks.

I still have Ninja Gaiden and Crimson Skies. Also Halo and Fable.

I rented Brute Force and was not pleased. Never liked the PGR series and Amped is garbage imho. Never played Kingdom Under Fire. Should I?

Xbox shouldn't even be on this list. I'd be hesitant to include Gamecube as well.

The Dreamcast shouldn't be on this list either (even though I loved it) but I would place both the Xbox and GC above it if I were to make a list. Nearly all of the DC's most relevant games are now available on other consoles.

Where is the original Gameboy?

And you'd think that longevity, cutting edge technology (for the time), in addition to a great number of excellent fighting games and shooters would be enough to earn the NeoGeo the #10 spot.

*Shrug* You should give it a shot if you can find it cheap. If you work in retail, or know someone who does, get them to do the quizzes at xbox.com/retail and get some cheapass MS games.

Xbox over Genesis and N64? :lol They probably didn't want to piss off any xbox fanboys I guess.

The top 5 is basically spot on, although I'd switch SNES with PS1 and PS2 with GBA. The bottom 5 is completely wrong though.

Bottom five should go:
6) Nintendo 64
7) Genesis
8) Xbox
9) Gamecube
10) Saturn

10. N64
9. Dreamcast
8. PC Engine Duo system
7. Sega Saturn
6. PC Engine (Hu Card design)
5. Genesis
4. GBA
3. Playstation
2. NES
1. Super NES

ignoring current gen stuff (Dreamcast allowed in due to virtual death)

"Xbox over Genesis and N64? They probably didn't want to piss off any xbox fanboys I guess."

maybe they are including emulation/chipped boxes ? ;)

then again i guess not , if they were, the list would have one certainty:

1. Xbox - Chipped (Snes, NES, PSX, N64, PC Engine, Neo Geo, Genesis, Mastersystem, etc...)

People will argue over lists for ever. For me, i fail to see what the GC has done to warrant it appearing on any lists, but that's just me.

Cause I excluded the PS2 & XBOX which is home to about 2/3'rds of the DC ports. :)

10. Nintendo 64
9. Dreamcast
8. Gamecube
7. Genesis
6. Xbox
5. Playstation 2
4. Game Boy Advance
3. Super NES
2. Playstation
1. Nintendo Entertainment System

NES first? Nostalgia, nothing more.

GBA being rehash central can't possibly qualify it for top 5. Somewhere near 10, maybe, but I'd leave it out before Saturn for damn sure.

Lack of Saturn love is distressing. Too many good games for it not to qualify. It's easily better than DC.

My personal list:

01 Super NES
02 Playstation 2
03 Genesis
04 Saturn
05 Playstation
06 Xbox
07 NES
08 Dreamcast
09 N64
10 Gameboy Advance

edit: fixed my list. Wasn't comfortable w/ 2-5...

Nice list overall, although I would put Nintendo 64 a bit higher for the few truly revolutionary games that it had, and GameCube and Dreamcast wouldn't have made the list at all. Dreamcast and GameCube are the two trashiest "high-profile" consoles to ever be released.

The original Gameboy should be on the top 10 list. Some people here never experienced it, but it was pretty freaking awesome at the time (1989). Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land II, Castlevania, megaman, kid icarus, Gargoyles Quest, Tetris, Zelda, final fantasy adventures, blades of steel, Bionic Commando, chop lifter, shadowgate, battle of olympus, nintendo world cup and wizards & Warriors: fortress of fear.

The Game Boy had good software, but I couldn't play the damn thing. It was just way too blurry.

I didn't think about at the time. Oh and Hunt for red october was an amazing game.

No Saturn & no PC-Engine = utter shite.

GBA at 4 is a joke.

Fuck it ... why bother wasting brain cells on this debacle?

wow...i disagree with almost everything on that list except for the placement of NES. the poor placement of dreamcast is by far the worst error.

I have never played Sega Saturn, so I can't speak for it, but there's no way the Gamecube should be above N64 and Dreamcast. For their respective times, DC and N64 had truly amazing games. GBA shouldn't even count on the list IMO.

My list North American list would probably look something like this, roughly grouped where I think the systems are fairly equal.

10. Gamecube
9. Game Boy Advance

8. Dreamcast
7. Xbox

6. Nintendo 64
5. Genesis

4. Playstation 2
3. Super NES
2. Playstation
1. Nintendo Entertainment System

My personal list:

1. NES
2. Genesis
3. Saturn
4. SNES
5. Dreamcast
6. Turbografx 16
7. Gameboy Advance
8. Gamecube
9. Gameboy
10. Master System

I agree that the NES was a much better system than the SNES. At least when it comes to action games. Even to this day I play my NES far more often than its predecessor. I think that Zelda, Mario, Mega Man, Contra, and Castlevania were all better games on the NES. Oftentimes, I'd rather play Metroid over Super Metroid. That's not to say the SNES versions/sequels were bad. Not at all. But I still think the NES games hold up better. Plus, the NES had all sorts of orignal quirky titles that are still fun to play today. Games like Snake, Rattle, and Roll, Little Nemo, Guardian Legend, Battletoads, Little Samson, Kickle Cubicle, Rockin' Kats, and Blaster Master. So many forgotten gems.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that although it's your "personal" list, it's utterly useless because there is no PSX or PS2. You have to be fucking off your rocker to think they haven't been home to some of the greatest videogame series of all time at this point. Off your rocker and chronically biased, I might add.

Your list is five hundred times worse than EGMs. That's quite a feat.

I think the list pretty accurately reflects the feelings of a lot of gamers I know not invested in console wars on forums, etc. Recent Nintendo consoles are grossly overrated online for some reason. I'm kind of surprised the PS2 isn't higher, but I agree the NES should be #1. The Gameboy was absolute shit before the GBA and I have no quibble with that either.

You're right, it's my personal list. Meaning, I personally don't put PSX or PS2 in my personal top 10. That's not to say they're bad consoles, or even worse consoles than the likes of Gamecube or especially the Master System. I just don't like 'em as much. You know. Personally :)

Yes. And that's why personally I think you're chronically biased and insane.

Not that I still don't love you. It's nothing but love in the love train ;)

Just because DC games are available on other systems doesn't make the console irelevant. If you want all the major DC games you'd have to own all 3 current consoles. Does the appearence of MGS on GC take anything away from the PS? Does Mario 64 on the DS make the N64 any less of a machine?

Even the Dreamcast's appearance is questionable. Fanboyism aside the system suffered from a very mediorce lineup. It lacked a really profound game like Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid or a Halo. Instead it was flooded with arcade titles, or titles with a striking resemblance to arcade games. And Shenmue was not that game. Even the PC-Engine/Duo beats the pants off the DC.

Since when were arcade games a bad thing?
