Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Arrghggh, isn't that typical.

Been looking forward to today like I'm 8 years old and it's Christmas!

Wife: "I really fancy us going to the pub and doing the pub quiz tonight, what do you say?"

Saying "No" would not be good, as I've ribbed her mercilessly over the last few years that she should be more social and do something like the pub quiz me and my Brother go to.

Saying "Yes" means coming home at least a little drunk, and unlikely to be able to appreciate the game I've been waiting nearly 30 years for.

I think this is wise, although my friends are going to find me uncharacteristically teetotal tonight I think, just not feeling the need for beer, might be suffering a bit of a temporary stomach issue, I'm sure it will clear up later, like say around the time my HOTAS gets plugged in :P

Depending on your budget, the solution can vary a lot. Its sadly not as simple as suggesting a gamepad.

The page is for programmability comparison but you can select individual hotas reviews in the first page list.

In a few pages back i recommended the CH fighterstick + CH pro throttle combo, they can be had for roughly 200$. The saitek X52 pro is a cheaper alternative but its very hard to find now. Thrustmaster warthog is probably too expensive for just Elite.

A cheap alternative for HOTAS could be T16000M + CH pro throttle actually.

Brilliant - thanks a lot. Great info and just what I need to compare some options. Figure I might as well "go large" but we'll see.

Hope the Beta's great for all players and can't wait to get started once back from this trip.

Yeah im not too sure what happened there, the launcher should update itself.. Or maybe it will update itself but that Frontier simply updated the launcher download on their site.
 
There is no new client to download. The launcher will just update the game. No idea who put out that wrong info.

Alright since it was the final day for the lifetime pass and star citizen is too far away I tossed my 125 bucks in the hat. Should be on tonight to test this out.

Personally I'd suggest playing at least a few missions without the rift till you find keybinds and controls you like... Remember that you wont see the keyboard, so setting up Voice Attack seems like a thing you'd rather do BEFORE you get the Rift, so you can actually play when you get it.

- Fix authority response not attacking player when in no-fire-zone by making GenericAuthority friendly with suitable factions, and lowering the check on ship vs no-fire-zone from allied to friendly
- Make shadow cascade cross fading optional based on shadow settings.
- Added an explicit check to ensure PolyTrails only recalculate their vertices once per frame
- Fix to fTime occasionally making time go backwards very slowly (not handling windows clock being adjusted appropriately).
- Added some preloading frames and changed audio output streams to send digital silence to wwise when no data available from mic (prevents voice starvation)
- Moved shadow filter quality settings from the directional light to the deferred shading settings since it's only used there
- Skip cross fade passes where possible
- Minor optimisation to stream system
- Reduce the number of nested cascades rendered based on the current depth partition bounds
- Stars and planets now write depth - a new fxl (DetllarBodiesDepth.fxl) has been included for this. This fixes the worst of the pop effect in the I Bootis binary pair
- Stars and planets now transition to and from the stellar background
- Reduced the number of strings being created and discarded every frame
- Removed some temporary array allocations happening every frame
- Pack the lens flare base mesh in to on stream and compress the stream
- Set station attach modules to use the physics MoveTo function rather than update via kinematic callback. This should figure out the station modules velocity for better collision response and it's useful for obstacle avoidance

Personally I'd suggest playing at least a few missions without the rift till you find keybinds and controls you like... Remember that you wont see the keyboard, so setting up Voice Attack seems like a thing you'd rather do BEFORE you get the Rift, so you can actually play when you get it.

Seems like a very good reason, thought I know I won't be able to stop myself at just dealing with keybinding and setting voice attack. ^ ^( Elite dangerous is really the first game where I thought such thing was usefull, and after playing previous beta for a few hour with it I just can't imagine myself playing voices commands ).
 
Will be downloading this in 4 hours.

Edit:Iit'll be funny seeing people die in the station because they don't get permission to dock. Saw it so much during premium beta too. Lol
