Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Most of the update is good. But the way they've done the combat missions is just... dumb.
Here's how it goes.
You go into a station and check a bulletin board.
Find and accept a combat mission.
It might tell you which system to go to.
Once you've warped to the system, you're supposed to... search around a frigging star system until a point of interest pops up (usually unidentified), and then get close enough until you can see what that point of interest is.
Here's the problem... star systems are huge. You *cannot* cover the whole damn thing in any reasonable amount of time. There are a lot of points of interests scattered all over the damn place. And not all points of interest become identified once you're close enough. Moreover you can't easily cycle through POI targets around you - for some reason, you can only target them when they're directly in front of you; so it's a cone of detection rather than a bubble of detection.
All of which leads to the fact that actually getting into combat with your intended target is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Which in turn means that combat missions... are pretty much the worst way to make money right now - the balance in Premium Beta is that shooting stuff was a very reliable way to make money, but only at a modest pace - so it was good starter money.
Hopefully enough players comment about this to get it changed before soon. Elite should have a major focus on combat - and the motivating factors of the gameplay and balance needs to support it.

Nope, but it is highly recommended. It not only feels more intuitive with it, but controlling vertical and lateral thrusters for added manuverability really helps.
Almost certain that I'm Commander GeoGonzo, but I'll have to check.
This thread was made for the regular beta, we already had a different one for premium beta.
I'm currently Commander Backer #41965 but put in a request to change the name to Golem
Cant quite get the head tracking to work on the DK2 so far, though the game shows up in 3d correctly. Saw the fix but couldnt find the processes it wanted me to terminate, guess I'll wait for the updated SDK support.

I spent the evening working on my flight stick stand instead of dinking around with DK2 and Elite. Good news - Rudders attached to stand, all pieces painted, all I have to do tomorrow is actually assemble the thing and I'm good to go. Bad news: I'm going to sleep without trying this stuff out.

Twice now, the station I am docked at has disappeared from around me while I am sitting looking at stock and outfitting etc.
Seems the only way to fix is to leave the game.
But, I am pleased, my first time flying around outside of combat missions, I got permission to dock, flew through the slot, toggled my landing gear, and landed, within 30 seconds, pretty pleased.
Then Hyper-jumped on a mission, super-cruised to the station, and did it again, not a single hitch.
Sat outside watching the Aulin enterprises spinning, flinched as a Lakon type 6 and a sidewinder collided in the slot. Lakon survived though,
Loving it, bugs not withstanding.
Btw, Soi-Fong, will anyone be making a GAF clan or something?

Is it me or did the gravity inside the station change a lot? The ship doesnt follow the rotation anymore like in alpha and premium beta, i thought maybe it was in the ship functions (there used to be an on/off for this), but i cant even change it. Needless to say, it was much hard to dock 
Here's a binary system, actually based on real scientific data, they'll add star deformation further down the line.

The little i played this morning, i really like the little changes in the beta version, the boost sounds better, the lighting is better, hyperspace effect is much smoother now, and it seemed a lot more populated (even with NPCs). Ship prices are much lower too no? Eagle for 12k, pffft thats cheap. Im aiming solely for Viper though.

Just wanted to chime in that I think you're spot on. The entire point of a HOTAS is to give pilots the ability to do many things at once, without the need to take time to move their hands. That is obviously an advantage.

The early reports for the Viper is that its the new superiority fighter. two C4, two C2. 8 ton cargo capacity. 350m/s top speed, 500m/s boost speed and it outmaneuvers a sidewinder.
