Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I'm not claiming it is doubling the number of alus. Im claiming that, according to what im witnessing and others are witnessing, the game is built to take advantage of ht. Your posts are mere disbelief with no substance, implying I dont know what ht is. Check this out:

This dudes findings are very consistent with my own.

Hmm yeah I'm sorry for that. But I though you were saying that it caused a 50% speed up, which seemed a little over the top to me.

How are you supposed to do any kind of dog fighting or fighting at all at those speeds?

Elite 2 and 3 had full newtonian flight models with no speed cap, and you would have to dog fight using them. It was extremely... weird. But really cool in a way.

It was kind of like jousting.

Always a danger when talking about CPUs, and I don't blame you really for coming in and thinking I was misinterpreting what my results were saying. Not many people have moved on from using pure core clock speed as a measure of power, let alone comprehending the finer differences between multithreading vs hyperthreading. So no harm no foul.

To clarify, I'm not saying HT results in a 50% speed up or whatever, only that the CPU is reporting a jump in load from about 50% to about 90%. Which is just one of many variables that could account for microstutter (and note I'm also only theorizing as to what is causing the guy with a 2500k's microstutter). Also to clarify, this is still in beta, and I wouldn't expect the retail version to be poorly optimized for non-HT CPUs.

Jousting is a good description of space combat. Realistically it would be just one pass as engines are not powerful enough to turn them around fast enough, but in fiction, we can posit engines that are powerful enough to allow this.

This would be different from fighter-plane sims too, since fighter combat isn't jousting.
Of course jousting has an issue of being relatively one-dimensional, given that side-ways movement is relatively limited, and up-down is pretty much pointless (it doesn't offer anything unique over side-ways movement). But that can be solved by setting the combat areas to asteroid, uh, thickets as fiction typically portrays them, near space stations, near capital-ship fleets and other places where there are more tactical considerations than there are in open space.

EDIT Something i remembered about Freelancer (which i like because i liked it before. If i were introduced to it today, i wouldn't like it) is that i try to fight as if i were jousting in it (engine cut-off and turbo allow this), but the way the game works, jousting doesn't work in it well unfortunately. The funny thing is, i intuitively (i was like, what, 14 when i got the game some years after its release) tried this style of combat instead of dog fighting which tends to be more natural for space combat games.

Anyone have any experience with a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X? I ordered one today to play this game a bit better than my m/kb setup.

I didn't wanna splash cash on a more expensive one as I likely won't get the use out of it

EDIT: guess I should read the thread haha

Has there been any info from Frontier in regards to rendering space stations while you're in "fast travel" mode?

Not only are space stations not rendered, it seems that where you actually drop out of fast travel is irrelevant except for distance. It always seems to drop you in the same place either 5, 10 or 50 km away from the station.

so far I have to learn to use it but yes, it works really fine. I have pretty much things always used : vertical/horizontal thrust, select target, boost, silent running, next fire group, next/previous target. i even have FrameShift Jump on it.

It's all open to configuration so I might change it often until I find my comfort point.

Is there a way to set up keys as "shifts" on the 360 controller?

Such as, holding down "B" and pressing DPad Up gives a different command than DPad Up normal?

Never leave your PC alone for 10 minutes during online play.... lesson learned, haha.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask if I do traveling right because it seems like I do something wrong.
When I need to do more jumps, do I need to leave supercruise? I always get thrown out of it even if I turn away from the sun fast.

Set your throttle to zero whilst still in hyperspace, then pull up immediately when you drop out into supercruise and you'll miss the Star by enough to not get pulled out of SC.

You don't need to drop out of SC to jump to another system.

Slowly getting the hang of it. It's defenitively more immersive and is better for combat. THough I might redo all the Combat Scenarios with it before trying it in Live Combat.

Is this game definitely coming out this year?

I've been psyched up to play a real space combat game for ages now. I am hoping this will fill the void.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but what kind of CPU and GPU am I looking at to get this running at a smooth 60-75 FPS on an Oculus Rift?

Hm, I always get thrown out because of "too close" no idea what that means, should be far away enough from the star I think...

Jumped out of supercruise at a safe distance and... ship exploded. I think the server spawned me and someone else at the same place at the same time.

500k worth of cargo down the drain.

Blows the Amiga games away

E:D's flight model is non-newtonian. That's probably the only major difference between the two games in terms of design philosophy. It might turn off some fans of the old games, but it makes combat a lot better, so I think that was the right choice.
The rest is either the same but better, or completely new and totally awesome. And that's not counting the expansions, which will add even more awesome stuff like walking around inside ships and space stations and rich planetary gameplay, among other things.

Note that I don't have a lot of experience with Frontier. I didn't know it existed when it came out, and I only played about 8 or 10 hours of it while waiting for the Premium Beta.

I've logged so many hours into Frontier it's scary...I really should check this out.

Basically space drifting. Knowing how and when to use newtonian physics gives you a huge advantage in combat.

Now that sounds very cool.

Thanks for the replies! I think I'm in..just have to decide which of my boxes to use. Not running Windows on anything other than laptops right now. (Hacktintosh's and Ubuntu)

Guessing Windows is required.

Wait, that works? I don't have to spend all that time in the stupid HOTAS controller software in order to set up a shift button? NICE.

yeah, my left trigger engages supercruise/hyperdrive and B + LT extends landing gear.

you can't use the frameshift drive in a starport, so no worries! (I've mistakenly hit that button before hhahaahhah

So I've just been granted press access to Elite (thanks so much , and am probably going to lose myself in this world which I feared when originally looking at its Kickstarter, so my question is which is the best stick setup for Elite? I noted a number of previous posts have suggested the T-Flight HOTAS X as a great all-round stick setup, and for the price its hard to beat, but are there any others?

My price range for now is max $100, so I guess the Hotas is the best option?

Yup it works really well so far. I guess that for a ''cheap'' HOTAS it's the best you can get.

Well, I'm glad, because the X52, while it seems very good, is also pretty pricy for something I'll probably only use on this one game. Still biting my nails waiting for my Thrustmaster, it'll be here tomorrow.

Wicked. Originally I was going to buy from a random Australian retailer on their official website, but checking Umart they have it (though not in stock -_-). So any Aussies looking for a HOTAS X can find one on Umart for $59, far cheaper than the others out there.

So can you fly a plane, spacecraft, drive a car, or whatever IRL in third person? Aside from some odd experiments, you cannot.
Simulation game that is based on piloting/driving something should stick to first person view.
We have a space sim, you control it from inside. The end. EDIT Do note that "simulation" doesn't automatically mean extreme realism. But if you simulate a fictional thing that is explicitly controlled from inside, with cockpit view and whatever else, stick to that.

If you make some kind of action game, third person view is fine. But if you make an action game, don't call it simulation game in the first place.

Thanks woogs.

Ok, help me out, GAF. I'm trying to make money so I can move on from this starting Sidewinder. Trading is a pain because it only has four slots. I've tried going to Conflict Zones, but I can't seem to be able to choose a faction, so I can't earn money for kills.

Can anyone help me understand what I'm doing wrong? Or at least point me in the right direction to make some credits with my starter Sidewinder? Thanks!

To choose a faction, go to the right panel and move to the right-most tab, there you can change your faction. Then you'll get credit towards your mission and money for kills.

When I hit spacebar on the "faction" entry, nothing happens :(

FWIW you can also use xpadder (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xpadder/) to emulate other input sources like for instance your mouse/keyboard on the 360 pad. It allows enormous flexibility like allowing states as well as shifts. A state being you press some button or buttom combo (like B+Up) to set a state of the controller at which point it can have an entirely unique set of mappings. I prefer states over shift/combo presses since I find they have a tendency to get awkward a la RTS' on the 360.

Are you doing it while you're in a conflict zone? I don't know what spacebar does for your control setup, but I'm assuming it's UI Select for you.

Yeah, it's UI Select. Do I have to be in a conflict zone to set my faction?

"Yeah, it's UI Select. Do I have to be in a conflict zone to set my faction?"

Yep. When you set your faction in a conflict zone it will change your IFF so that NPCs in the same faction will be green and those of the opposite faction will be red. It resets every time you enter a conflict zone.

That explains it. Assuming once that's done, any red enemies I kill will automatically reward bounties, etc?

Thanks for your help!

Easier way to make cash is fly to anarchy systems and check out all unidentified signal sources. Some are gold that you can scoop up and sell for 4500 per on the black market. If you come across a transport you can also "persuade" it to dump it's cargo, which often contains gold too.

I'm awfully close to buyong this but I need to know if my PC will handle this game properly. I have a 2500k @ 3GHz, a GTX560 (non ti) and a 1080p monitor. BF4 and Titanfall kinda run like crap with anything over medium setting so I'm really wondering if I would have a good experience with ED...
