Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Now that i understand the game better im having lots of fun in the beta, but i cant help the feeling that maybe when the game is out it dies a silent dead, i mean for them continue to development they will need more money (since there kickstarter didnt fetch that much over what they needed). So lets hope the game sells well, but im afraid it will be a niche thing. To bad because i would really liked to see the planet landing stuff.

tons of people have bought the expansion pass. Also their expansion are paid expansions. they also have made enough money from the kickstarter and they have their outside investors. it'll be fine.

Why do you have that feeling? It raised over 2 million and is loved by lots of people around the world. It also has a pretty great history to go on.

Well its not based on anything realistic, but everytime i read newsletters i just really want it to happen, i've been waiting for a game like this for so long. So its just more that then anything else :)

Maybe it's because we are getting accustomed to ludicrous budget allocations to AAA games that maybe a so ''low'' budget seems impossible for what they have in mind.

But I think that they can pull it off. They seem really serious about it and have a clear scheme.

They are still earning money for those games and also have earned money with them. Zoo Tycoon and Roller Coaster Tycoon for example sold pretty well.

So it's not like Elite is the only thing they have going on.

Thanks, i've checked some gameplay footage from frontier elite 2, but holy crap, that game was advanced for its time. seamless planet to space stuff, its gonna be so awesome once thats in elite (even if it has a loading screen i dont care)

No loading screens. They said that if they had to do it with loading screens they would have failed and would not even make the game at all. Remember, the engine is custom made for this game. It supports it all.

the guy basically flies as close to the planets as you can right now. You can actually see that they got heightmaps down there already.

I set up voice attack after reading about it on this page and it's awesome. It's so nice to not have to remember so many keyboard commands. I need to teach the computer a bit more so I'm not repeating myself. My DK2 will be here in a day or two. Cannot wait. I might not ever leave the house again.

I've definitely found myself liking this more then I thought I would. I'm very slowly learning more and more. How to play, what to do, etc. Very cool game. I'm excited for what the final product is like, though the beta is insanely polished.

And I might have to get me some flights sticks. Maybe.

You've already bought a DK2. Get yourself a flight stick! I have the flight stick without an Oculus, and as tantalizing as experiencing this game with an Oculus DK2 sounds I can't imagine playing without a flight stick. I don't have a throttle (using keyboard for that), but it's so nice to be playing a video game with a flight stick for the first time in ages. Docking my ship and maneuvering in dogfights is so much fun.

Yes, it supports rudder pedals. I suppose most people would map yaw to the pedals since the primary stick is most useful for pitch and roll*. The X52 has a twist feature so you can put yaw there if you'd rather not buy rudder pedals.

*Unlike many of the older space sims, Elite's ships have a very slow yaw. Putting it on your primary stick is wasting an axis.
The Thrustmaster HOTAS-X has twist-yaw as well, that's what I'm using. Definitely better than no yaw at all, for sure, excellent for fine-tuning.
Does anyone know why I can't discharge my heat sink sometimes? I know that you dump it and then it takes a while to come back, but it doesn't seem to come back that often.
I thought you had to refill the heat sinks at the next station you stopped at?

There does seem to be some kind of bug with the controls now and again. I have an issue where it won't boost when I want it to. I think that one has something to do with Flight Assist, I turn that off and on a couple times and suddenly boost works again. I use boost quite a bit approaching and leaving stations.

I was just at Chango right now dropping off some cargo when some player just decided to try to shoot me down about a kilometer in front of the airlock.

The spaceport went to work and I started seeing a lightshow right in front of my eyes with the defenses suddenly firing left and right. Dude blew up to the right of me in less than 10 seconds.

Was pretty incredible seeing all that in the Type-6 because of the huge glass canopy.

Those station defenses are no joke. I got wiped out by Aulin Enterprise a couple days ago (still not entirely sure why.. I did have a fine, but it didn't let me pass to pay it off). It was pretty much over by the time I realized what was happening.

I definitely need some better defenses, but I'm still saving up for a Cobra. I got taken out earlier today in my Hauler by an entire group of pirates that interdicted and then just opened up on me. It was the missles that did me in, I had no countermeasures. The Cobra's definitely getting the whole shebang, though.

Yeah, this is the reason why I immediately equipped my Lakon Type-6 with some defenses. Immediately bought a chaff launcher for it and two point defenses in my utility mount.

God, I cannot wait till planetary landings!!!! That will push this game soo much!!

I hate those aulin defense systems so much right now, seriously give me a warning to put away my weapons when I accidentally bring them out and hit the wrong button...

/cry

Otherwise I need a few days to get the swing of this game, really just tosses you in a ocean and tells you to go swim.

Is there anyway to tell what the power output of your ship is?

I'm trying to outfit a Cobra and want to see what's best with out cooking it in seconds.

From the devs in regards to "g-force blackouts/redouts"

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=660709&postcount=64
In all seriousness though G-Force is a useful tool we might intend to use to shape the current dogfighting manoeuvres to improve the odds of player's giving each other the slip and turning the tide of the battles. At the moment two very skilled players can all too easily find themselves perfectly circling each other waiting for the other to do the stupid thing and break out and make themselves a target. A g-force or pilot fatigue mechanic can help break these stalemates and add another resource for skilled pilots to manage and exploit against others. This is all in the name of making the core combat component more interesting to play and has nothing to do with trying to implement something that exists in real life for realism sake alone.

Help please - Managed to get to BD+47 2112 with my Sidewinder, but now can only jump between BD+47 and Wyrd. Seems I can't reach any other destination anymore even though I got here!

Bug or am I missing something?

Do you have a full cargo and/or guns equipped?

Remove all the weight you can from your ship, if possible.

As above, only 1 cargo. Only guns are the original loaned units, have not added anything to basic Sidewinder yet. Will dump cargo as mentioned above.

I just want to watch videos of someone jumping, then docking at space stations and taking off again all day.

edit: re online combat mechanics. Space sim combat has always been fun, but extremely formulaic. I can easily see it not working properly in a PvP setting with the aforementioned circlestrafing. Starfox used to prevent this by introducing pre-canned manoeuvres, but I don't think those are in the spirit of Elite.

Great, thanks guys, selling back the cargo solved the problem :) Can now reach Morgor.

Need to upgrade ship as soon as possible, have 24000cr odd so nearly there. What's the best upgrade for cargo and jump distance?

Go build a Hauler in Aulin. 16 Tons of Cargo and better jump distance.

Same here. I'm stuck at work and all I want to do is fly my ship.

Seriously, how good is this game if even that basic experience of just flying the ship is all I can think about?

Well that's pretty much all there is with some dogfighting here and there. But yes, the space flying is already good enough, when the game will release it shall be incredibe.

When the final game releases you won't see me for months, I'm off to explore billions of star systems and carve out my own little home in space.

By the way guys - I think commander names are unique, so I would reserve a good one now just in case.

Log in, then go to Commander Profile, then request your new name so you're not "Commander Backer #29875".

Well there is a list of Commander Names used by Gaf somewhere in this thread, but we should update it and maybe add it to the OP.

Damn, 143K .......... Going to take time!

Don't worry, soon you will be making that much every jump.

I <3 my Type-6

:D

I will probably buy this as soon as I get my oculus rift.

What are the chances of getting a steam key for the full version once it releases ? Have the devs said anything about a steam release yet ? I dont want to buy it twice.

I do wish there was something extra offered for the $75 instead of just the privilege of playing early as they continue to add to the game. That's making that price to much of a road block for me in the end.

For those people using controllers, what is the preferred setting? I using gamepad with pitch and yaw setting.

You are badly handicapping yourself if you insist on sticking to Pitch & Yaw control instead of Elites traditional Pitch & Roll model, the Yaw rate is far far too slow to use it as a primary axis instead of Roll.

Gotcha, I'll try it out. Would that be the default controller settings? Or the Advanced controller setting?

The 3-5 second pause coming out of fast travel near a station sure seems like a "loading screen" to me.

Is that just an artifact of the beta that will eventually be removed?

No idea what the defaults are with a gamepad (I use a HOTAS).

Just thought you'd appreciate the warning about the reduced Yaw rate, sticking to Pitch & Yaw will have pilots eaten for breakfast by the NPC's, let alone any PVPers.

It's not a Loading Screen, it's network lag / latency related.

They are still working on the transition (still a whole lot better than it was in premium beta), but the "loading" is actually mostly a thing from the multiplayer, the connection to other players, your MP bubble basically, is 90% responsible for that lag, the rest is loading the station. They are still working on transition and eventually it should be lag/load free.

Thanks for the info, got the Hauler. Hope to start making some real loot now.

Mind you got attacked on my first run!

How are you finding the Hauler for running? Personally I've turned of the single weapon and diverted all power to engines to increase max speed and boost. I figured I'm never going to actually fight anyone so why not? So far when I get jumped all I've seen is a brief blip in my scanner before I'm out of there using boost and then jumping back into supercruise.

Can't wait until I can play later - I figure 3 more decent runs in the Hauler and I'll have enough to get my Cobra and equip it decently enough to make the purchase sensible.

As others have said, that is a network thing. If you play in solo mode it is MUCH faster already.
