Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

In regards to Rift disorientation, I've found it helps to have something to focus on outside the ship. For example, if you're just staring off into space, you get all loopy when you move, but if you're following another ship in a dogfight, and keeping your eyes on him, you can twist and flip the ship in every damn direction and it feels fine.

I tend to do better in open space, getting near the stations gives my brain something to reference, and the disorientation gets worse (like when I'm docking).

Same, I can get a bit disoriented from time to time. Like for example, I can stay outside of station and be completely stationary, but the movement of the station will give me headaches from time to time.

So I just got a DK2.

A) Should I buy this game

B) Should I buy this game if I only have a GTX 760

C) Should I buy this game if I only have a GTX 760 and I value my free time

I am dying to play with game with a DK2...every person who has played it with DK2 say its amazing. However I dont know how a GTX 760 with the DK2 will fair . I have a Geforce GTX 650 Ti Boost and the game runs great.

All of the above.

As a DK2 owner, it's absolutely amazing.

I haven't been playing E:D a lot since I don't want to heavily invest my time since it's getting wiped, however, from the couple of hours I played, it was amazing. One of the best Rift implementations to date, with the exception of the galaxy map (which will hopefully be fixed before 1.0). There was also an Oculus SDK update which introduced judder into the game (many Rift games have this problem). Turn the settings all the way down if you encounter this and it should be super smooth. The game is really well optimized.

Yup, pretty much the premier experience right now.

Pair it up with a HOTAS and it's downright immersive. And not in the way next gen consoles are bastardizing the phrase. Like literal immersive.

I have an Obutto, with an X55 and the Rift. I spoil myself but it's so, so worth it for games like this. :3 Immersion is on a whole different plane.

Good tips on the DK2 slight sickness. That's exactly what I've been trying. I find if I focus on something it works a lot better. I was able to play a couple dogfight scenarios and it was intense stuff!

Sitting there looking out into space and there the ship is, you start to follow, deploy your guns and start shooting! Then they zip around and go right next to your ship ... so crazy.

I couldn't wait so I did overnight shipping for my X55, hopefully it comes before I leave work because I don't want to hang around here! I just have to figure out some good ways to mount it. I don't really want to take my Fanatec setup apart on my wheelstand ...

Oh, and can you use driving pedals for rudder pedals? I may want to see how that is but I think I like having Yaw on twist (at least back when I played flying games with a joystick I did but that was 10 years ago). I see the pedals that people have but are they more like push down and they spring back up or is there a "back" to them, like a seesaw where there's a midpoint and then one way and the other or is it just push one pedal to turn one way and push the other pedal to turn the other? Always confused me.

Man... I had just saved 30k for a small hauler and some cargo. However, I got into the habit to disregard safety approaches out of supercruises due to impatience. So yesterday, when I was cruising out into Aulin, I spawned in while clipping the station. I got tossed around and exploded.
I just wish the game had a method for letting you cruise out closer than 20km, so I don't have to eyeball it and risk being atomized.
Now I have to save up 30k again...

So, some questions for those playing that I really can't find a good definitive answer for and GAF always rocks for this type of information.

When you die/explode - you lose all of your cargo and your ship I've read. How does insurance work and is it expensive? Is it a % of ship cost or flat across the board for all ships?

Storage: How does this work? Do you ONLY spawn at a port you have as home or can you spawn at different places if you die?

Is the single player (offline) ships/money you earn able to be used in online portion or are they separate? Say if I have a cool ship and 50k credits ... go to the online section, would I start with the default credits and starter ship or have the stuff I farmed/bought/sold in the offline portion?

Is Voice Attack ($8) worth it? I will have an X55 so I'm not sure if buttons will be in short supply but I watched some videos and it seemed pretty cool.

DK2 - Seriously, how do you read the text? Is there any font smoothing INI files or something that can be used? I seriously am completely lost when using Rift mode because I don't know where stuff is by memory.

- Insurance is 5% of the cost of the ship and everything you equipped it with.

- Right now you respawn in the last station you've been to, if you pay the insurance fee. If you don't you respawn in a Sidewinder and always in the same station. It will work differently in the final game, but I don't remember the details.

- Single player and multiplayer are not separate, although right now single player is still technically online. You just don't see other players. Maybe when they include an offline mode it will be seperate.

- Different people will give you different answers regarding Voice Attack. It can be very useful if you play with a controller but other than that I find it a bit gimmicky. HOTAS + keyboard is the best way to play for me.

- Never tried the Oculus.

I think it's fine for mapping lesser used/non-essential commands if mapping starts to get tight (although, with modifiers...probably wouldn't happen). Those people using it in combat to switch targets and launch missiles and stuff look pretty silly and it's slower than just pressing a button.

Awesome, thanks for the answers!

Looks like I'll hold off with Voice Attack for now. I'm still jumping into everything ...

Plus, look what was just delivered, now I have to sit in my office and watch the clock until I can go home

*sneeze*

Hrm, maybe not feeling so well ...

I know how you feel. My x52 was delivered a few hours before Premium Beta hit. It was like Christmas!
Without the annoying relatives...

Space still looks a bit too bright for my taste. I liked the Alpha/Premium Beta look better... Oh well.

In my experience, most of the text is readable, although it helps to move your head closer to the smaller text. It's definitely not ideal and I'd appreciate a better font or a better Rift!

I'm seriously debating on the wireframe paint.

Worth it.

No it's not. But buy it anyway.

My problem with the paint jobs is that you never actually see them 99% of the time you're playing the game.

It'll come. Im not sure how they will implement it, there used to be talk that it would be available when out of combat but recently they mentionned that it would actually fit within the technological universe of seeing the ship outside while you're actually inside. Meaning you'll be looking from the cameras of a drone you sent in space :p

Ha, just figured that out!

Holy shit. Finally got my X55 hooked up and did the second Scenario, the simple dogfight. WOW! looking down in the DK2 while seeing your hands make the same gestures is surreal. Chasing the guy down ... it just felt, right. My girl was playing Guild Wars 2 next to me and didn't understand why I started singing Kenny Logins and yelling for Goose.

I borrowed one of my VoiceAttack commands from a streamer I saw playing the game a while back.. "I feel the need...", and it disengages assist and hits boost for a quick getaway. Once I get a voice set up to respond through the program, it'll say "The Need for Speed". Also helps that I'm in a Viper right now.. highest top speed.

However there's an opinion here that we'd like to do a full reset as a lot of earning mechanisms have been changed or added and it would be useful to us to track progression from the start point.
This sounds completely reasonable to me. The balance of the first hours of the game is ridiculously important too, and most people won't care much since there's still going to be a full reset for gamma anyway.

-edit-

But based on previous experiences I'd say... available for download at around 23:30 GMT, playable the day after :P

Any info about an update for the rift?

There's an update regarding the game itself supporting mirroring on an external monitor without distortion. I'm hoping for more performance improvements as well.

I'm hoping that I can turn up a setting or two even with my 780 Ti Classy since the game was still unoptimized in stations.

Is there an ingame option for that?

Not that I've seen.

Basically, it's just a few lines you add in to your AppConfig.xml file (which you can find in the same folder as the Elite Dangerous exe...). Just paste this chunk of text into the <AppConfig> section, run the game, and the second window should pop up.

<StereoExtraDisplay>

<Height>810</Height>

I bought the game yesterday, Beta 2 comes out in the next couple of hours and my X52 Pro arrives tomorrow.

It's a pretty good week, yeah?

I would really appreciate some help if possible... Coming from a Mac background, I'm looking to build a gaming PC just so I can play this game when it's released (my mac isn't very good), but spec-wise I'm completely clueless. I'd like the game to run very well, but try and keep the cost down as much as possible. Could someone give me any suggestions about some of the processor, motherboard and graphics card options in particular please from the following list:

Any help would be hugely appreciated thank you!
