Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I have no complaints with the X55 but I haven't used it for an extensive time and never used the X52P. From research I guess it's been a QA issue with the X55 otherwise people like it better that I've read. I got it from Amazon with a 3 year warranty which was only $20 just in case. Figured $20 is worth peace of mind.

Yeah, I think the only 2 negatives for the X55 I can see are lack of a dual stage trigger and QA issues. I was all set to order the X52 pro (Don't really want to deal with QA issues) when I just plugged my X52 back in and suddenly the stick works again and the resistance is back.

I really wasn't in a position to spend to much now but looks like I can holdout and hope they rectify the QA issues or save up for a CH setup.

Good to hear! I would have went with a CH setup if the stick had YAW on Twist. I am going to be utilizing that a lot just in my flying style and probably with other games since I don't want to use pedals.

That's why I've been holding on to my (over a decade old) Saitek X48 dearly. I love the rudder rocker on the throttle, as I'm not very fond of the twist sticks. If CH had a typical pivot throttle setup instead of their old sliding design I'd probably had bought a complete CH setup with pedals long ago, but I'll stick with my X48 for as long as I can. It's even broken twice but I "fixed" it well enough to be usable again.

There doesn't seem to be one HOTUS design that clearly wins all categories for me, they all have pros and cons.

Any guesses as to when the final game will be released? Those who have been following development closely, does the game seem on schedule for a release this year or is it quite likely to be delayed?

I doubt it will be delayed. Since Beta 2 their output has increased a lot. Seems on track to me and that's the vibe I get from the official forums and such.

I'm waiting for release to buy, but development seems to be accelerating to me. They originally said end of 2014 for release, but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it slipped a little. Either way, they are doing a fantastic job, as this appears to be every bit the modern version of Elite I could only have dreamed about twenty years ago.

I'm going to be spending so much money on this game over the next few years.... O_o

The mirroring debug feature is pretty wicked. Works real well and not really seeing any performance degradation.

Glad Frontier put this in since I'll be going to a VR meetup and I'll be showing off this game. Experience should be better with this mirroring hack.

How do they manage to blow me away every single week with a single jpg file?

Fuck yeah! Atmospheric fuel scooping! I think this is a result of peoples wanting to go towards the center of the galaxy when the game releases and Frontier acting to make it happen. Im pretty sure we will have the same for gas giants.

So I'm trying to get my friend into this (we used to play the Freelancer online mod and smuggle together, great fun but there was actually danger from players as cops or pirates pulling you out of warp) but I'm not exactly sure how much there is to do as a group at the moment. Any suggestions?

Edit: To clarify I already got him the beta for his birthday. Trying to come up with activities to actually get him in game.

Beta 2.05 will be available by 11:50 BST

Thanks to your continued feedback and logging of tickets, the team has managed to put together a further update for beta 2.

One big issue that the community flagged up was the problem with loading times: some players were experiencing delays with starting the game, in hyperspace and coming out of supercruise. 2.05 is geared directly at ironing out these issues, to make cruising through space a smoother experience.

We need you!

The community has been incredible so far with feedback, and the team wouldn't have been able to put these updates out without you. Please continue logging tickets and replying to this thread in the forum, so the devs can see if the above aspects have been improved, and stop any problems the changes may have introduced.

Woohoo

Dang, finally got time to tweak with the Rift settings. AMAZING. Text is very readable now and I while I haven't tried online I get no jutter in space stations. Now I'm just wiring it up to play on the HDTV (I actually like both Rift and monitor about equal at this point).

Finally could try the beta2 with my rift. It's sooooo much better now! Rock solid 75fps and much better tracking in general.

I'm blown away :O

What do you mean, what did you do to the settings to make it more readable?

Before I had no idea of the Oculus slider. I slid it down one and then was able to turn AA up a little. I also disabled shadows and blur.

I don't get any stutter in the station in a tutorial. I believe you'll suffer framedrops (from what I read on the official forums) if you are playing with others in a station just due to their being more ships and such, the networking also seems to cause some issues.

But in the tutorials I get flawless (or damned close) fps and head movement when in a station.

I also may be looking at improvements in the past couple updates too. I wasn't able to play for about a week and I know they improved some stuff since then when I updated.

Yeah the text is much better now. But I think that's because of the new beta?

Yeah, I'm thinking it's me finally messing with my settings and actually getting it to go.

On a side note, anybody get hella (/90s) fog in their Rift? My left lens for some reason always gets fogged up. Thinking of getting some anti-fog I used in my snowboard goggles but that stuff can be hit and miss on the weather. I know there is some dentist mirror stuff they use but not sure if it would be spotty or cause irritation.

I did order one of those covers that were on Reddit, I think they may work for the most part as I think it's my big fat head being so close to the lens and encased in foam that causes the issue. Breathing through my nose can sometimes cause a quick draft also for some reason. I promise I don't have a pig nose!

But yeah, constantly having to wipe it down unless I have my Vornado pointing at me. ... Maybe I'll install liquid cooling.

Was also thinking about something like this:

Gah. Now that I'm not just fiddling around and actually trying to earn money, I find out they've jacked up all my old trade routes. I'd like to get back into my old Cobra getup, but it looks like it's going to take a while.

Man I really dislike the hardpoint setup on the Cobra. How do people use those wing hardpoints practically? I assume those have to be gimballed while the inner are your skill shots.

How do I change firegroups? I have the scanner on 2 but don't know how to use it.

There are keybindings for cycling previous/next, I can't remember what the defaults are though sorry. Just look in your keybindings, they're there. Then you just cycle to the firegroup and press whatever key you use for primary or secondary fire. Primary fire is the yellow box icon, blue is secondary fire, so whatever you set the scanner as in the firegroup, press that key. Sometimes people get confused and are unaware what fire action they assign it to and press the wrong key. Also, if you're using the discovery scanner, you can use that in supercruise, just cycle to the firegroup and press the fire button.

How do I change firegroups? I have the scanner on 2 but don't know how to use it.

The default key should be U I think, for "Deploy Hard Points", and then N to cycle through the firegroups. It's weird though, once I have the scanner active I can't put it away again to frame shift unless I disable it from the firegroup, I can't just retract it like I can a gun.

Edit: Also I'm not sure if you have to just press the fire button to use it or hold it down until it has finished scanning. I held it down but I'm not sure if I had to.

Updating to 2.0.5 somehow messed with all my hotkeys so now I have to setup my x52 again (I use the basic settings plus a lot of extra stuff and some things changed here and there). Wanted to show the game to a friend on friday after updating the game and because all the buttons were off and didn't want to take my friend through all the settings, I ended up only showing the galaxy map (which is amazing anyway!).

Oh well...

How does the scanner actually work? Isn't my ship scanning the surroundings automatic?

Yep, no idea. I went to Styx and I automatically started getting notifications that I'd made new astronomical discoveries, but then I went to one of the planets there and tried scanning it and then it told me I'd made another one. Hopefully eventually it will actually tell you what you are discovering!

Okay here's how exploration works. Targeting an unknown planet or moon will automatically scan it for data. You need to bind the Discovery scanner to some firegroup and using that scans the area for more astronomical entities such as other planets or moons. Depending on the distance from you and the object and the rating of your discovery scanner, you may not find anything.

Isn't that somewhat backwards so-to-speak? I mean, I don't think it's supposed to tell you, because you're supposed to actively search for undiscovered objects, and when you finally find one and is close enough, it just unlock the possibility to lock on so you can scan it. Or did I misunderstand you?

Edit: I see the post above me adds more depth to the process and possibilities, I haven't played the game much yet and didn't know, cool, I'm falling in love with this game more and more.

Is it playable with mouse+KB or it's vastly inferior to joystick/gamepad?

Plays fine. Although I do recommend (unless you don't like them), getting a joystick or something, it makes it a lot more fun, makes you feel more in control of your ship since it's more immersive if you're into that. I used a KB/M before plugging in my Joystick because I was lazy and I had no problems at the time.

Ok I set the D Scanner to firegroup 2 and change it to 2, but nothing is happening when I press the fire-button. Does in only work when I'm in an unknown system?

You have to hold it in, it charges. You should see a blue bar charging up where it shows on the HUD.

As long as it's showing up when you deploy with that sub-group you're good to go. Have to hold it until it completes the charge.

It'd be neat if it made it easier to locate what it found. "You've discovered 7 new astronomical objects" and then I have no clue where they are.

Honestly, I wish I could just turn off those notifications right now. I'm hauling, not exploring, those pop-ups get annoying, especially when it shows you the same pop-up six or seven times for the same object.

They show up in your navigation as Unknown once you discover them.

yesterday was really bad.....constant stuck in hyperspace...I suppose its an increased load on the servers on the weekend.

Finally got enough money for a Viper. Liked it quite a bit. I thought I'd go to do some PVE at conflict zones and Mining belts. Some other player ambushed me and destroyed my lovely ship. I tried to escape through the asteroids, but he hounded me down. Damn you CMDR Mujii! Now I had to get a load to keep my viper loadout....

I love the viper. Super fast ship with very capable armaments. If you upgrade the thrusters enough the turn radius is rather good. I like making strafing runs on Anacondas until I can take out enough of their weapon systems to stand a chance.

After watching Guardians of the Galaxy, I wish that Elite had a music player in-game that would play the music in two modes, normal mode and "old radio" mode that plays the music like it were playing off some radio taken from some junkyard or something.

And play this while just flying around:

http://youtu.be/-oUEVrjSxS4?t=28m35s

I don't think it'd be hard to include (though it would be way down on the to-do list) and they could just make it so it reads your music folder or whatever path you tell it on the options menu.
