Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO and founder of failed blood testing startup Theranos, was found guilty on four charges of defrauding investors, capping off the stunning downfall of a former tech icon.

Quite a saga for this young criminal, but sentencing is still ahead.

What do you guys think- is she going to jail? Personally I'm going to bet no but hey maybe I'll be surprised.

Yeah I would be surprised if she spent more than a year or so in jail. White collar crime just doesn't carry the same consequences as other stuff. Oh what's that you swindled people out of millions and committed fraud for years??? You used this fraud to make yourself into a business celebrity and sell yourself as a success story? *slap on the wrist* Meanwhile you get treated like a pseudo celebrity and STILL have a comfortable as fuck lifestyle when your wrist is done getting slapped.


But by god if you or I get caught with a bit of good weed after going 47mph in a 45 then you might end up being treated like an actual criminal the whole way and depending on your record you may even serve 2 or 3 times as long as this bitch is going to serve. Oh and good luck with your background checks when you get out! Just because you had a bit of weed.

It's worse than that, since tens of thousands of patients were given faulty blood test results in accordance with the lies she pushed. People likely died.

Oh I know. I just didn't wanna go down that rabbit hole. This is another Bernie Madoff situation where we will never truly know the level of human suffering that came as a result of her actions.

Gonna depend on if the terms are concurrent or not to know if she rots, but there’s no way this fake c word didn’t know what she was doing here. You don’t fuck around with medical device safety. I kinda take this one personally considering how much time and effort my peers and I put into trying to get things right, and delaying projects and not meeting deadlines when they’re not.

At least Madoff kinda got what he deserved and died in prison. I expect Holmes to leave prison after 5 years max.

Very true. Though to be fair the two situations are wildly different in terms of people affected investor wise. She preyed on the rich.

She was the same as any SV tech bro / gal - industries should be 'disrupted', move fast and break things, etc. It's the same as WeWork shit - you call yourself a tech company and suddenly no real-estate rules should apply to you.

I see she played the time-honored get out of jail free card and popped out a baby just in time for her case and verdict.

So many children born just so their mothers can use them as a prop to avoid jail time. And the worst part is despite the scale of her crimes it'll still work in this case.

Yes, this stuff is really bizarre. Basically she was found guilty for defrauding people not asking questions, while the people that did and infested anyway ‘should have known better’. What?

What i saw was that she was condemned for wire fraud against the investors.

really good segment about the Holmes case from the perspective of venture capitalists. highlighting of the dynamics of media coverage, the actual fraud and lack of diligence from investors and how a snowball kept getting bigger and bigger due a positive feedback loop.

IMO, white collar crime should be punished heavy. Even worst than you average $50 store robbery (nobody killed) or petty crime. Getting robbed or smacked in the face is bad, but when you got some people well dressed on stage who could have swindled 1000s of people's entire life savings, is that better or worse than a guy waving a baseball bat limited to stealing from a cash register and running off?

Who knows.

Hope she stays in most of that for the scam she ran. Really undermined confidence in the space and took a lot of funding away from what is a really important space.
