I agree. He seems to have some unfinished business in his mind from the PayPal days and he now has enough infrastructure to really make a difference on how information and content is distributed.
Let me give you a for-instance, a tremendous amount of Twitter "content" is really YouTube clips that are monetized by Google. Nothing prevents him from launching a video-player rival that captures this revenue stream himself.
And then there's the medium-term synergies (and I *hate* using that word, I feel like a tech company circa 2000!) when SpaceX will have hopefully been granted their FCC petition and launched ~30,000 satellite Starlink Gen2 constellation as proposed which will yeild around 500Tbps over land. We currently use 600Tbps in the internet infrastructure as configured. He can either continue partnering with T-Mobile or directly launch his own phone service, etc.
The man has ambition and drive and has built all the foundational pieces for something really unique. I, for one, hope he pulls it off.

So, I don't think this is a realistic assessment of talent and how smart people actually work in the world.
Clever programmers and mathematicians and physicists are employed in many fields and can adapt and work in any of them. Of course the Tesla guys (or Neuralink guys) could offer support and oversight.
When I was in quantitative finance, half the guys weren't of a finance background, they were from mathematics or physics. My boss was a PhD in Chemistry. Myself and my best friend, who's still in finance, hold advanced degrees in Neuroscience, yet we worked on things as wide as machine-learning, graph theory, hell even forex and human-smuggling. I went to school with a BioE with works for SpaceX as an engineer and from what I've heard from him and anecdotally, Musk is an amazing guy because he hires regardless of formal background, based on ability and pliability of intellect.
That said, your latter reply doesn't give me much hope you'll approach this with an open mind, unfortunately.

I’m actually surprised elon hasn’t tried to make a phone yet. I imagine his designs and accessibility options would be very attractive and come off as a new kind of apple. OS and support would most likely be the biggest hurdle

Building your own OS is tedious and and reminded of Musk's comment to George Hotz where he allegedly offered him a job at Tesla saying, effectively, why spend your time tracking down the edge cases in self-driving which will be infeasible when you can work with us? It made sense to me.

I am in software development. And yeah, there's very little that's going to suddenly pop out of Tesla's teams mouth that the Twitter engineers don't already know or already know better. Further, their tech platform isn't their problem.
And the other bit... Well, it's all for show, and it's stupid as fuck that Musk would disrupt his very busy team at Tesla to do a showboat exercise with the engineers at Twitter. It's pretty much exactly in line with everything he does.

The Tesla software team, if the reporting is true, is probably only there to get the code looked over by a team that Elon trusts. I doubt they'd add anything new or revolutionary to the underlying Twitter code.

Probably the system design, not the code itself. And even then, not sure what they'll add to it (Twitter actually has a good architecture, and (used to) lead with some good open source and references architectures). Anyway... Twitter doesn't have a tech stack problem.
Plus with the recent software resultant recalls they probably should stay focused..

Google has exclusive contracts with manufacturers for android, so it’s not so easy to break into the market. They also tie their apps together. So while it is open source, it’s very limited and with google in a big way. You can learn some things about it via the MicroG project or see what Louis Rossmann is up to working with FUTO.
Anyway, would be nice to have more competition, because this duopoly has got to go

I always find it weird that communism is deemed acceptable while fascism is not. As political theories they share more commonalities than differences and the bodycount from attempts at establishing large-state communism are way greater.
Communism, particularly Marxism, strikes me as being presented as morally "good" because its utopian final stage gets all the focus, not the revolutionary and socially purging actions that are an absolute necessity to reach that utopia, whereas with Fascism the reverse is true. Which is ironic really as both their "great visions" for global society are equally absolutely intolerant of any of dissent!

I would suggest it's for exactly the reasons outlined by Rentahamster and DeepEnigma, he wants a trusted view into the codebase and algorithms that exist in terms of automated moderation, ranking and social graph analysis of users/bots. All of these map well to what is done by the Tesla guys.
As for the rest, I would suggest you put some perspective on what Tesla has done. They not only built, in-house a clean-sheet car design (unlike the majors who use OEM basically everything and just assemble) and have trained a network that can drive in real-world environments on a 14nm ASIC. That's pretty damn amazing and pointing out two click-baity articles on growing pains in what is a monumental task that's actually working successfully, right now, everyday, in the real world is more than a little silly IMO.

Communism is Imperialism 101 sugar coated and marketed to generational youths that have been used to being raised by their parents, hand outs from their parents, sent to school by their parents and thus they find that continued "parental handout" scenario a very appealing way of life. If the guy is making Twitter money as a tech engineer (surely making over $100,000) and can’t afford to pay monthly bills for a Tesla the guy has money issues and blew his budget. The guy is one of those “I make good money, assume it’ll last forever, and I’ll straddle the fence pay cheque to pay cheque buying Teslas and Starbucks frappacinnos like money is no object”.
