But just think about how much richer he could be if he was smart like the average GAFer and knew how to run Twitter!

I still think it's hilarious that these wealthiest person lists only include people with publicly visible wealth, such as equity in companies they founded

Meanwhile estimates of the wealth of the Saudi royal family top $1 trillion but it's not in the media's agenda to ever report that
yep, the rumor is that Musk isn't even truly the wealthiest person in the world. I've heard the same about the Saudi's. That there are some worth over a trillion.

who somehow always feel that private people should solve government problems (hunger, homelessness, healthcare).
Avoiding partisanship in saying so, it seems he's taken that on for himself with the Government Efficiency position. Not using his personal wealth, of course, but government austerity that will facilitate those issues in America and seal his legacy.

I don't think it's in most people who want to stay alive's interest to make a lot of noise about that.

I quite like my head attached to my neck, thank you very much.

I wonder how someone so rich and important feels about death.

Meaning, if you are so rich and powerful and your life has so much value... Wouldn't it suck even more how you are still a mere mortal and you will end up like everyone else in the end?

Well done Elon

How do you even manage that never mind spend it
He has stated publicly before that he plans to spend it all on funding the construction of the Mars colony

There's no real initial commercial value in such a project which is why he anticipates using his personal funds to pay for it

I fully expect Musk to start some cryogen company and put himself in cryo sleep before he dies. He'll wait until he can be revived and have his consciousness transferred to a machine.

If he gets petrol powered cars off the road, and reignites the space race, he can have double that for all I care.
Government regulations is what pushes EVs down consumer throats, not an overpriced company that sells 2 million vehicles annually.

BMW sells more EVs in Europe than Tesla, and that is a premium brand.

Yeah about that...

For the first time ever, BMW sold more EVs than Tesla in Europe in Juli 2024. BMW sold 308 vehicles more.

Before that, Tesla was the dominating long-time #1 in Europe for EVs. Model Y even was the best selling car overall in some months, not only best selling EV.

Obviously he's quite a divisive person on a personal level. But he's done a lot to push the development of electric cars and space travel forward and those can be hugely beneficial for our future.

While not topping any all time lists, the leaders of Hamas are also billionaires. The media doesn’t like to talk about that either. All that aid money we send goes straight into their pockets.

That is very cool and all

But I am asking how do you personally manage that level of wealth. You would need a tree structure of financial managers ?

It is not as though you phone you local branch to check how the interest on the capital is doing

Tesla drivers are up there with BMW and Audi drivers for being absolute wankers here in the UK. And Teslas in particular are too wide for our country roads.

Anyway, EVs are overall great, but advocates far too readily handwave away the many issues.

At least he's publicly putting that wealth into tech that will advance humanity. Electric cars/reusable rockets/planning for Mars/neural implants/robot maids, etc. Not that different of a list than what I'd use money for if I was incredibly wealthy. You don't have to like his views to admit that he's been a net good in a lot of fields.

You can tax that wealth and have people democratically vote for representatives that are involved in deciding how to reinvest it for humanity. Or we can just hope for a benevolent king.

I get what you're saying, but have you seen how the government "works"? Look at NASA. One dude with a lot of money has a lot less bureaucracy to deal with and a lot less things standing in the way of actually getting something out the door. I'd like to see some of these things happen before I die.

shouldn't be allowed. nobody needs that much money. nobody needs 0.01% of that much money.

of course that's not how much money he has in the bank to spend at a moments notice. a lot of the value is tied up in whatever shares he has. still... whatever he does have then it's still more than he needs.

Taxation has seen to benefit those making the rules more than those the elect the rule makers.
Well you have to ban special interest influence and legalized bribery. You have to fix how government works to make it more responsive to voters. This is assuming anyone cares about people having representation. Having individual people with this much wealth is going in the wrong direction. If people want that, that's their opinion - but it's literally the antithesis of democracy. Oligarchy is a word for a reason. At the rate billionaire wealth is doubling, we'll just have a pair of trillionaires own an entire country in 20 years. There is nothing you can even buy at that level of wealth except functions of government. No one makes products for people with this much money. You're just replacing entire arms of the government with one person. Anyway, people seem into it so whatever. Weiland-Yutani 2040!
