Elon Musk buys Twitter

…what happens if China wants to play ball? This must be unprecedented oh no….

For all of you questioning the move, let's be honest here. Twitter is already a terrible place to be, it's a place that practices OPEN CENSORSHIP (alex jones, trump, babilon bee etc). There's no way Elon will make it worse.

It'll either become a good place to have "free speech" or it will cease to be relevant. In any case we win.

The idea of "hate speech" is to establish one of the boundaries of what is free speech. People like to push those boundaries because to them it proves that they actually have free speech. You happen to like that boundary because it conforms to your ideology about other issues that we can't get into.

Of course, there are other legal boundaries, such as the classic of yelling fire. I haven't seen anyone argue that should be allowed, though I'm sure some do.

Also though, I haven't seen Elon claim his Twitter will be completely open and adhere to free speech absolutism. I'm sure it will still have restrictions based on some common ideals of moral decency instead of political identity.

In real life they do not run around saying hate speech wherever they go for very obvious boundary reasons. That's society for you, and it's not changing online except in isolated places.

This is the kinda meltdown that gives me the nice warm and fuzzies. Reminds me of those megaton times during the 360/ps3 wars back in the day and the meltdowns that followed.

Is the concern that opening up Twitter to other ideas and perspectives will damage all the peace and acceptance it has helped to foster these last few years?!

It's ideologues claiming that the only speech those on the right have, is hate speech... or what they continue to shift the Overton to deem "hate speech."

My prediction: Twitter in a year from now looks a lot like Twitter today. People screeching that this is the end of humanity/the rebirth of freeze peaches will be disappointed. Costco hot dogs remain $1.50

Costco hot dogs ftw!

Damn, I just got really hungry. My old house was literally across the street from the local Costco. I used to grab two dogs for lunch when working from home. Ah. Memories.

An aside, I am surprised that so many are having a laugh at Twitter employees' uncertainties. Any time a company changes ownership can be stressful, and Musk does not have the best track record when it comes to treating employees fairly. Frankly, if I were in their shoes, I'd be using this as an opportunity to get the fuck away from San Fran. Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, even Florida, all have tech jobs that pay better in areas that cost half as much (or close to it) to live in. Fucking get out now, lol.

I can't imagine what could ever replace Twitter as I can't imagine anything dumber than Twitter.
Now excuse me while I go yell at some kids that are on my lawn.

Their pizza is also pretty damn good. A step up from frozen and your little ceasers types at least.

LOL this is great.
Don't really use or care about Twitter but if this helps in any way to turn it into less of woke echo chamber then I'm all for it. Worst case scenario it crushes and burns which is ok with me too.

Hate speech = speech I hate

The hate speech argument is so hilarious to me. Twitter is full of hate, it's just directed toward the people the woke echo chamber decided deserve it.
Anyone who had no problem with the way the platform worked before but is now worried about "hate speech" is full of shit.

Never ends.

It's definitely a possibility.

Many Americans (which matters, because it's an American company and not exactly super popular outside of it) don't realize what people from other countries consider to actually be "free speech". Here in the US, the first amendment provides meager protections by placing several restrictions upon the government. That's it. Musk, as he has expressed before, thinks that Twitter - a private entity not affiliated with the government - somehow suppresses what he considers "free speech". Well, that's easy to quantify from observation: he doesn't think the people that got banned for breaking the rules, such as hate, abuse, shitty politics, forwarding conspiracies, etc, should have been banned. Right? I mean, who else have Twitter been banning aside from bots? If someone doesn't run afoul of their rather lax rules they get to remain on the platform. I am pretty sure even the Taliban still have their account active, because they have not broken the rules.

Also, not to be misunderstood, I don't actually give much of a shit about Twitter, and even less about whatever one of the various space-related billionaires might be buying on any given day. I just think that the "FREE SPEECH!" crowd is missing what could well be the obvious because they view this as some kind of win, and projecting their value of Twitter in their own minds upon everyone else. When in reality even Reddit is more popular, and the whole thing could be replaced by a startup in weeks.

A week ago the same people who are triggered now were laughing when Elon made this offer.

Now they're imploding because they underestimated the way he does business, his purchasing power and attitude towards free speech.

I think most sensible people will know he will put in a competent team in charge and give them a mandate with some immediate bulletpoint goals, and manage it from a high level. He certainly has little time with all that's going on in his other ventures to really put a lot of effort in here.

Yes, lets create hypothetical problems and then hold people accountable for these non-existing problems.

This is by far the worst thing in the last 5/6 years for me. As logic and reasoning has taken a massive hit, the only way to convince sheep to prop up weak arguments is to make up an extreme hypothetical, then assert it's actually going to happen (despite it being the weakest equivalence even a GCSE student can see through) and finally finishing with a flourish of idiocy.

Twitter is a place where people act intellectually disingenuous and get some sort of high from getting people to like their opinions where they are being deliberately stupid. Hell of a drug those Internet hearts.

More often than not, it absolutely is true.

Sometimes, I guess, but need I remind us of Neogaf's policies....

A. Language

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use NeoGAF to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law. Sexual, racial, or ethnic slurs will not be tolerated in any form and are bannable on the first offense. It is recommended that profanity be held to a minimum in order to keep the level of discourse high, and profanity should not be used when addressing others. Though NeoGAF is an international forum, discussion is to be held in English unless otherwise designated.

Always going to be subjective... but like porn, you know it when you see it when it comes to hate speech. I suspect that advertisers, etc will also be considering that when they engage on the platform. Either way, I don't see Elon Musk turning it into that - I don't think there's any crow to be had or reason to be upset. Twitter was shitty before, and it shall remain so because at it's core it's a shitty platform. (it's why I am here, versus there, as an example)

I'm not a twitter tard, but I do enjoy watching hypocrites losing their shit. In other news, nobody is paying attention to whatever is happening in Ukraine.

You're right my opinion doesn't matter. The opinions of the companies and advertisers on Twitter matters though.

And if Musk is actually dumb enough to allow that kind of stuff onto the platform then they will be letting their opinions be known by leaving the platform. No business would want to be associated with something like that.
True, and you are right. But that's not exactly the same position you took earlier.

Hate speech is in fact protected by Free Speech (government related, of course). Whether someone wants to be associated with such speech is a whole other matter.

I don't think ol' Elon takes off all of the moderation on twitter. But if he makes it more transparent, then that's cool.
