Elon Musk: SpaceX is sending 2 people around the moon in 2018

I'd do it even if it had just a 25% chance of not killing me.

To see space and die having that experience would be worth more than 50 years on Earth.

Might be a stupid question, but wouldn't it make more sense if the first flight around the moon didn't involve passengers ?

There will be probably an uncrewed demo mission around the moon, first. At least they have to test that the heat shield can withstand the heat of reentry. A ship coming from the moon is going 3 times as fast compared to a ship returning from an orbit around the earth.

My two cents

- uncrewed lunar mission, december 2018
- crewed mission, december 2019

It's time.

Cool space jizz, and space squirting

Wow, wasn't expecting to see news like this today.

I'm eager for them to start testing the Falcon Heavy, but just imagine the quality imagery we are going to get from this mission if it actually takes place.

I'm so in. Now I just need the money. Who wants to sponsor me? I'm willing to wear ads! I attended Space Camp as a kid, so I'm already ahead of the game!

Thanks. That would make more sense.

They haven't even put a single human in space yet. Musk pls.

Yep. lol, no one is going to circle the moon next year, from SpaceX or anywhere else. It's something you plan for several years out before even attempting.

Besides SpaceX never putting anyone in orbit, going all the way to the moon is a whole other matter. It's like the difference between running a mile, and running a marathon.

Except it's a robot and they've got batteries.

Curiosity rover. JPL doing magic.

Woah, didn't realize it landed like that. Although from that small gif I thought that that was the whole landing system and that the craft returned back to orbit, which would've been nuts :D

Very impressive, but I think what SpaceX is aiming to do (propulsive landing all the way down) with Red Dragon is much more interesting and cooler :) But it still remains to be seen whether they succeed with it.

You really should watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHwUrxzrvtg

Terrifying, honestly. But one assumes SpaceX wouldn't agree to the flight if they weren't confident in their tech.

A lot of people in /r/spacex are thinking he maybe misspoke the distance as miles instead of km, as 400,000 KM is almost the exact distance of the moon.

That company that send millionaires to the ISS promised lunar flights using Russian rockets, but that obviously never happened:

I thought they'd only actually sold one of the 2 tickets for it and obviously cant go til they sell the other
Surprises me 2 people would be willing to pay spaceX who have never put anyone into space instead of going with space adventures/the ruskies who have a track record

Eva Lovia. I assume this is for your scientific research purposes.

So that image is from some space porn?

I gotta say, I kind of hope the two people that are going are a couple. How epic would it be to have sex while you're on the far side of the moon? Where no man has gone before, indeed.

I epect they wont make 2018, but keeping my hopes up for 2019.
