Embracer Group enters into an agreement to acquire Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and Square Enix Montréal amongst other assets

For this price, I'm surprised Microsoft or Sony didn't purchase them.
The price for Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and Square Enix Montréal was extremely cheap, considering it includes various IP's.

There are people involved in this that make way more money than you and I and have way more insight into what these IPs/Companies are worth to them. Tomb Raider is the only real item of value here and 300 mil was
obviously not worth it to them. And why are you singling out Sony?

Making more money doesnt mean they know more about games. I mean look at some of these studios and publishers. They don’t know what real fans want half the time. How many times have they failed thinking they know what fans want. Loads and then afterw while they get fired and moved to a different industry. They‘re not all inteliigent games and businessmen.

Because Sony is sitting back and letting everyone buy ip’s. They could of made there money back from Releasing a new Soul Reaver Remake and a Lara Croft trilogy lol

Furthermore:
400M acquisition w/193M per year = 2 years to pay off.
70B acquisition w/8.8B = 8 years to pay off.

Pay off what? MS assets stay the same.

Unless you think AB is worth $0 the moment someone buys them?

Not only will they own the publisher/IP's worth tens of billions, they will also be bringing in billions a year now from said company.

Do you think that money sitting in a war chest being obliterated by inflation & taxes brings in more money? Do you believe publicly traded companies grow by keeping their profits under a mattress?

those are rhetorical questions

Now back on topic, this is a big brain move here by our lord and savior MS. SE wouldn't sell CD to MS so they had Embracer purchase them in the meantime. Once AB deal is done MS will purchase Embracer. Phil is an absolute genius.

itsajoke...i think

They devalued so much what they had and now are selling it for peanuts while trying to spin it as something positive, using buzzwords and nonsense.
Exactly, To say that Eidos and CD cannot make profit it's absolute no sense this is entirely Square Enix fault their management with those studios and games has always being poor, Sleeping Dogs suffered a similar fate thank god IOI manage to cut ties with them otherwise Hitman would no longer exist at this point, when you produce games that are good such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider 2013 , Deus Ex Human Revolution and they don't give you profit something is really wrong..

Selfishly plays on Xbox Purr-ies X
For 300m?

Thats a great deal imo.

Wonder if anyone will put in an offer.

$300M with the IPs?!?!?
That's an insane deal and it makes it look like Sony overpaid for Insomniac and let's not even talk about almost $70B Xbox wasted on ABK.

I've said a million times that I really wanted Xbox to acquire those studios. I think their IPs would be excellent to fill the 3rd person cinematic with GREAT stories niche.

I do hope Embracer will at least treat those devs and their IPs better than Squeenix has and for the love of everything gaming PLEASE give us more Deus Ex!

Is there a chance this purchase gets "codemastered". I just can't see sony letting this one go if it really does come with the movie rights to tomb raider. Microsoft I get because Activision is locking them up right now.

Told you Square Enix didn't give two fucks about their Western Studios.

Good, now I can stop giving a single shit when anything SE is announcing anything as now I know it's gonna be a Japanese only thing.

Now, Embracer, about that Legacy of Kain reboot...

Super cheap deal. And it's weird to see them buying them instead of Sony or MS. But well, at least they will continue multiplatform.

I think it means Square isn't in talks to sell the whole Square Enix because I assume they wouldn't have sold them separatedly to someone else, a complete package I think would had a bigger value. I see this acquisition in the context of Square getting rid of studios and IPs that have not been profitable for them for a while.

Or, maybe, Square Enix is in talks to sell the company to Sony but MS had these teams signed for multiple codevelopments or exclusives (as it's the case for Perfect Dark), maybe Sony wasn't interested in these IPs and Sony wanted to reduce the price of the acquisition. So they sell them to a multiplatform 3rd party publisher.

But even in this case I think Sony would have been interested of getting the Tomb Raider IP and maybe Deus EX, but seeing the huge shitfest that caused the MS timed exclusivity of Tomb Raider maybe everyone agrees that it's better to keep Tomb Raider multiplatform to don't piss off the fans.

Embracer Grop has been the king of B tier stuff, but slowly has been amassing a lot of interesting stuff, now they have:
-Crystal Dynamics
-Eidos
-Square Enix Montreal
-Gearbox
-THQ Nordic
-Tarsier
-Flying Wild Hog (Shadow Warrior)
-3D Realms (Duke Nukem)
-Aspyr
-Koch Media / Deep Silver / Saber
-Dark Horse Comics

Many of them include several dozens of other ones, like Bugbear. They have a shit ton of studios and offices all across North America and specially Europe, plus also a studio in Argentina, India, China and Israel.

This is a Win-Win for everyone really the Embracer Group it's going to keep this franchises in many plataforms as possible wich is great for all gamers, really looking foward to see what they can do with Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Slleping Dogs (?).

I guess people didn't pay attention the most recent Tomb Raider and Deus Ex selling like absolute dogshit. Sure, there is strong nostalgia with those IPs and other held by the studios but they don't sell and don't make money.

You can't keep the lights on at these studios with IPs. SE is re-centering their business (probably for the worse) and trimming the studios that aren't profitable and not making them money is telling. Also, the price is very telling.

Once again we discover armchair businessmen on gaming forums rooting for their favorite plastic box probably aren't the best choices to run a business.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Why is it when a studio or studios gets bought that we think all of sudden a loved franchise from a decade or more will somehow make a comeback? Has this happened yet? I guess MS brought back KI after years of owning the ip. Any other examples?

It's good that they'll be staying multiplatform.
But yeah the price seems shockingly low even taking into account that their games have been under performing or just straight up bombing.

Hopefully they can thrive under the new ownership.

THQ Nordic has been doing this recently with Spongebob and Destroy all Humans and so on. I think thats the idea. Remasters or remakes of old games that could lead to revivals

With the recent comments of Yuji Naka san saying that Square Enix doesn't care about games, this makes even more sense , i wouldn't be surprised if someone gets the whole Square Enix within the next 2 years.

wow, well hopefully we will finally get more Deus Ex thanks to this but I’m really surprised that Square-Enix sold the studios & IPs for so little

you would have thought at that price Sony or others (EA?) would have beaten Embracer to the punch
