Emily Rogers: Splatoon Switch is not a sequel, allegedly. Same for Mario Kart.

For Smash Switch I would at least like all the characters unlocked at the start. I had to unlock everyone in the Japanese 3DS version, then the US 3DS version, then the Wii U version, and then AGAIN for the Wii U version because my data got wiped when my Wii U disc drive died ("I'll keep Mario Kart 8 and Smash U on my Wii U harddrive in case my external one fails.") I know the single player and unlocking stuff is a big deal in Smash but please god don't make me do it again. Or if we have to compromise, maybe have all the original characters unlocked, but you need to earn the DLC characters. Also unlock all the music while you're at it. They can keep the trophy grind if they need to.

I'm excited for new Nintendo hardware.

I'm not excited for new Nintendo hardware where half of the library are re-releases of what I played last generation.

And frankly I'm pretty disappointed in Nintendo even considering going this route.
 
The biggest bummer about the "no news until January" tidbit is that we wont get monthly Smash updates. Wouldn't it be cool to get a character trailer a month or something? If there are going to be new characters - of course.
 
Expected for sure, and welcome. Would rather see all of these out on the platform within its first year. Sequels would be like 2018-2019.
 
I don't have a problem with re-releasing games provided there is significant improvements. It's sorta sad that nearly everything they showed in the trailer is basically a re-release.
 
Figured as much. I never bought the Wii U versions of those games aside from Mario Kart because I had a feeling they would get ported to the NX.

Huh I thought it was pretty clear they were ports. I mean, we have barely saw any new content for Splatoon or Mario Kart 8 (some gears for the first, and a character for the second). The maps/tracks were the same, as the user interface and such.

Splatoon is barely a year and a half old, they couldn't seriously have already prepared the sequel in such short time.
 
Bummed Splatoon isn't a sequel but I'll double dip. Hopefully Mario Kart will have enough new tracks and characters to be worth it.

If that's the case, then the Splatoon team must have gone balls-out in terms of upgrading the game. Though I'm more curious about how much Smash was upgraded (I.E. are there more characters & stages?).
 
I think it's important to come to terms that Nintendo is treating these DX ports as supplemental to the big games. Nintendo has huge teams working on 3D Zelda and 3D Mario, and likely new IPs that Miyamoto hinted that the younger staff were cranking out during the GARAGE initiative. Big new games required money, staff, and time. Releasing updated versions of Smash, MK, and Splatoon to cushion their entirely new projects are a win - win for everyone.

Honestly I hope the online options for private matches are improved. Hope menu navigation is much smoother. I wouldn't mind map rotations being tweaked.

I could see reworked maps like how they did Urchin Underpass last August.

An enhanced Smash port feels like too big of news to show in a trailer montage of random games. That's why, I assume, it was not shown.

I think Mario Maker Switch is clearly on ice right now if the team is porting it to 3DS instead.

Of course. That's the only game out of the three that I haven't bought on Wii U. It had to be this one.
 
I'm glad they're enhanced ports because they look too similar to be sequels. I'd prefer sequels be made ground up on Switch.

mario kart is clearly an enhanced port but there were a lot of things in the splatoon footage that could have pointed to a sequel

as weird as it sounds for me the thing that stood out was the spawn pad being different. I took new gear, weapons, and maps as a given if it was a port to give Switch owners a similar content rollout experience that Wii U owners had over the course of a year but the spawn pad being different seemed weird to me. I initially thought it was a port but came around to thinking it was a sequel after hearing some thoughts in the Splatoon Switch thread.

either way I'm down. port or not it looks like there will be enough new content to get previous owners on board. hairstyles, pants, new weapons, new gear, new maps.

True, but sucks for the hardcore audience that did jump on the Wii U.


Also I wonder what makes these versions enhanced? I'm still not sure the switch will be more powerful the Wii U. But only time will tell on that.
 
Zelda: Obviously.
Smash: Why not.
Splatoon: It sold so well that I still think a sequel is on the way.
Mario Kart: Gives them time to make Wave Race instead of a MK this gen.

The Last of Us is literally the same game with prettier graphics. Splatoon looks to have a ton more changes than that.
 
Smash Bros, Splatoon, Mario Kart, & Mario Maker are all games that I still place on a semi regular basis. If they are making enhanced ports for all 4, I'll pick em up. If these rumors are true though, sounds like Switchs launch line is going to very much a "Wii U's greatest hits" sort of situation. Obliviously it's to early to say that for sure, and they may very well be a bunch of new original titles at launch too, but I can definitely see that at the very least, Nintendo is planning to bring a lot of Wii U titles over to Switch, and I mean I can't really blame em, and I imagine for the many people who skipped Wii U this wil be great, and the ones that are rumors are titles that have a lot of replayability to boot so it's not too bad if u have played them either, especially if they really are enhanced port that some new content to spice things up.
 
Pretty disappointing if the launch or launch window is padded out with re-releases.

I have no problem with it if there's lots of new games however.
 
People really thought they were full blown sequels? Wow.

Hoping for Smash Switch with a new character or two.

Makes sense to port over a good Racer, Shooter and Fighter.
 
If what I saw in that Splatoon clip is an enhanced port or remaster, then apparently I have no idea what a port is. The character models are different, animate differently, and the entire team introduction is new. The weapons may fall into prior classes but those models are different and new. The map is new, or at least has undergone significant changes on the level of Urchin Underpass' rebuild from the first game. Pants are added, which will change the entire way the current gear-ability system is balanced. The presence of new hairstyles may make other headgear more of an optional thing. No gamepad means no constant map, and means the super-jump mechanic will need to be significantly changed. That's not minor.

If this isn't being called a sequel, then OK, but it sure as hell isn't just a port, enhanced or otherwise. At the very least it appears to be a total rebuild of the original game's concept. Keep in mind how much the development team added to the game in the wake of its initial E3 reveal. A lot was added in less than a year and way more beyond that. The bulk of the team has already had a good amount of time to potentially work on this, and we don't even know whether it's actually a launch title. By next May or June...
 
That's why Switch isn't exciting as a Wii U owner. I can play every game they showed. Or there is no reason the Wii U couldn't play those games.

The Switch is more of a sideways move for a Wii U owner unless you really want ultimate portability.

For the 3ds owner, it is a cool upgrade if it is indeed also Nintendo's next gen handheld.
