Hey guys, JAST finally finally FINALLY released the game we've all been waiting for. Today, in fact!

Well, unless you already played the JP version.

Boob Wars.

:-/

In fact, it was MangaGamer that released Boob Wars, and they did so in October last year. Here's the page on MangaGamer's website (NSFW).

A hardcopy version was released last week, but it seems that JAST USA only added it to their website yesterday. They still didn't have anything to do with the game, though.

(Sorry if I appear to be a tad standoffish, but it just annoys me how JAST USA and J-List cause confusion like this.)

Speaking of JAST, I hope my CC will still be valid and with money on it for when they release Saya no Uta. I remember preordering it along with another game because of the free shipping offer lol.

That happens every time , so many of us should be accustomed by it ..in some cases they also ( JAST ) deliver download codes for the game themselves for the digital version.

Koihime musou was the same thing for example.

In other news , for those not being aware of the current works..here is a list ( not compiled by me ) Made 2 days ago from an infamous not so anonymous at a popular imageboard.
Thanks Tinfoil

In bolded are the recent stuff.
I do post this list because the one in the first page is clearly outdated since it was made 18 months ago i think and in no way i intend to take credit for compiling this list or anything..

InfiniteNine or someone else should post from the same source in 6 months or something so that we get more information on the current or deceased projects.

Any thoughts on Phenomeno? It was a free VN released by Nitro+, presumably intended to promote a series of light novels in Japan. I went through it some time back and it was a fantastic experience. It made for a genuinely chilling read. The fantastic art (contributed by Yoshitoshi ABe) and soundtrack didn't hurt.

Ah I didn't know about this! I'll give it a read later.

Yeah, I didn't even know about it until I stumbled across it on VNDB by chance. Bit of a shame it hasn't had more exposure with the English-speaking crowd but I suppose it's not exactly a well-known name.

Translation patch is here for anybody who's interested!

Heya, few questions.

I've enjoyed 999 and VLR a fair amount and I hear Ever17 is pretty good. (Same writer?)

How much time investment is required to get through the whole thing? And is there a recommended order to go through?

I did try starting it a few weeks ago, but it seemed kind of slow and classes were starting, so I didn't have time to go through it.

Also almost done with a new format for the OT so it'll get revised soon. Well.... after I beat MGR a bunch of times.
Nice to see that. i'm waiting to see what you'll do.If you need help , don't hesitate to PM me.

Nitro+ games are not happy stories in most cases ... is this any different ?

EVER17 can be 30+hours if you read slowly ... all the routes are required before you reach the final ending but there isn't really a path to follow IMO.

I'm pretty sure JAST USA has never sold any download versions of MangaGamer titles. They certainly don't seem to be selling them on their website. In fact, as far as I know, the only places you can purchase download versions of MangaGamer titles are:
  • MangaGamer.com
  • Desura (for Higurashi, Go! Go! Nippon! and EVE burst error)
  • iOS App Store (for Higurashi and Kira Kira)
  • Google Play (for Higurashi)

I always find it depressing to look at that list (shows how slow we are compared to other projects). In fact, somewhat ironically, we're 'bold' every week, despite probably being one of the slowest groups out there. (At the rate we've been going, it looks like we'll be done in about eight years. *sigh*)

Finished 999 and really, REALLY liked it. Waiting for my copy of VLR to arrive.

In the mean time, any recommendations? Looking for something similar, suspenseful with a ton of crazy plot twists.

I've read G senjou etc and Ever 17 is supposedly great, but it's so goddamn looooong that I'm having a hard time getting into it.

You're right i shouldn't have opened my mouth ..i was offered a download ticket ( as apology ) for school days that is a jast title , not a mangagamer title.

Sometimes your memory makes you mix things up.

the important fact is that some project are alive even if they are slow.. even if you're taking time , the fact that it's done is good enough for many ...

Phenomena's not playing in English for me. :( I extracted it to the same folder and everything, and renamed the folder too.

NEVER MIND! :D

Was just the OP for some reason.

Hah, yeah, that confused me too. No worries, you'll know what that text says soon enough.

Er, how scary does Phenomeno get? I'm not good with horror, but I did play both CP games.

On the other hand, ABe art. Compelled.

Very chilling prologue though.

Slightly spooky but nothing too bad. I'm a bit desensitized to that sort of thing though, so I guess I'm not really the best judge.

No gorefests along the lines of Corpse Party, at least. Much more subtle than that.

OK, so I've been playing this VN were the protagonist is this guy that can leap through various alternate universes and you make decisions that can significantly alter your outcomes and branch on different routes. The game has a flowchart system and you can use it to jump to any part of the game you've already been to, and there's also tons of scientific shit going on, and you have to gather info on some routes to solve puzzles on other routes.

The game I'm talking about is YU-NO - The Girl that Chants Love at the Edge of the World.

Now this is a game that surprised me. It was made in 1996 and got a fan translation a couple of years ago, so it feels a little primitive compared to recent VNs. However, it has a truly well-written story (based on what I've played so far), which I'd say it's up there with the best mystery/sci-fi VNs I've played. It's definitely quite reminiscent of 999/VLR, except this game was made over a decade earlier.

The game is point-and-click. You wander around the city (Your House, School, the Beach, etc.) and meet with people to talk and advance the story. Occasionally you'll find items that may be useful.

An interesting feature is the Save system, which is actually ingrained into the game's plot. It allows to create Save States in the game's flowchart and revisit certain points in the game. I was surprised at how well implemented this is. It's useful, yet not broken the way it's done, although it is a little unintuitive

Now, a fair warning, this game is an eroge. You play as a High School Student, and depending on which route you take you'll end up with different girls, and you can trigger eroscenes with all of them (although I think some can be skipped). There are also several ecchi scenes, mostly cleavage and panty shots. However, I should note that based on the two eroscenes I triggered in my first run (which amounted to around 15 hours of gameplay and 22% cleared) is that the eroge in this game is more on the soft side (definitely less graphic than Katawa Shoujo, so it shouldn't be a problem if you went through that). It's still adult stuff, though. You've been warned. The TLWiki entry for this game has a linked NSFW screenshot to give you an idea.

If you guys played through the Infinity and Zero Escape series and want more stuff like what's featured in those games and don't mind the eroge, definitely give this a shot. I'm far from done with it and can't wait to finish it.

Amazing game, YU-NO. The story is excellent. I remember that when I started playing it, it took me a long time to finish it, and even skipped one or two classes just to keep playing (and I've only done this twice before, with ML Alternative and Fate/Stay Night, both personal favorites). Incredible that this game came out more than a decade ago.

Also, the soundtrack still gives me the chills. Pretty good songs there, and they set the mood perfectly.

Oh, and don't get fooled by the graphics, too, if you would like to try it but are put off by them. They matter very little in the end, since the story is king and you'll be way too hooked to the game to even notice.

Going to give Ever17 a try one last time, a question

How long is it? I'm a fairly fast reader, can't really say how many words in a minute or whatever the measure is. Somewhat fast lol.

aravuus

Member
Oh, great. That's actually not even close to what I feared, I thought it was going take me a month.

I know I'm going to love the story, wish me luck

Also depends if you want to listen to all the spoken dialogue. If you listen to every spoken line like I did, yah. A month.

Ever17 is not a game you want to fast-forward through, either. You have to take the whole thing in and meditate it for a while.

While I do read all those boring parts like descriptions of a goddamn blue sky fast, I also slow down and really concentrate on the text when there's dialogue even remotely related to the overarching plot. I don't listen to the dialogue voices though because frankly, I don't really like Japanese as a language. At all.

If I came across Ever17 knowing absolutely nothing about it, I'd probably pause for a minute to, for example, think why
the number of life signs is jumping between 5 and 7.
(small spoiler a few hours in, don't tell me why btw lol) But I do know something about it, I know the plot's going to be pretty fucking over-the-top. The truth is probably going to be even crazier than I could ever imagine. That's why I don't really stay and think about all this stuff.

I read through 999 like this too. Worked wonders. I did start wondering about a lot of stuff by the end of the game though, so I'm expecting something similar to happen with Ever17.

All in all, I just prefer reading fast.

Nor that ending.

Okay, I'm interested in trying one of these. Just one. Any of them. What is one that you'd recommend more than any other as an engaging starting point for someone whose only experience with anything of the sort is the Phoenix Wright series?

Well if you're at all into gripping mysteries and awesome plot twists, I'd recommend 999 for Nintento DS.

Not sure if I'd recommend Ever17 yet. Or maybe I should, it's 2:20am here and I'm still up so I guess you can't really go wrong with it.

If phoenix wright your starting point then 9,9,9 is a good way to get immersed into the experience , after that the natural flow is to go toward virtue last reward .

Then comes the hard part :
If it's the mistery and the puzzle solving that make you stay awake , then you can go some titles .
However if it's the plot twists and the characters that makes you go on, then it's another path to take.

We will be ready for you once you've finished VLR.
