It's been three days now.
Last time I ordered something from J-List that was listed as in stock, it took them two weeks to ship. Horrible site.
Ha, and I just spent all that time getting the Japanese version working. I've been bumbling through the language too much to appreciate it; my skills still need a few more years in the cooker. Japanese people sure can read quickly, it feels like I'm back in kindergarten trying to keep up with English. I haven't played to any H-scenes yet, but I might go for the all-ages version, if the website gallery was anything to go by. Depends on how much narrative is cut in the process.
Since I don't play many VNs, I had no idea how tame Katawa Shoujo was compared to its peers. Neat though, I wonder how many VNs get ESRB ratings.
Oh, this seems interesting.
My interest disappeared.

I honestly don't like 18+ content, so I won't miss it. I'd only tolerate it if it was really crucial to the story, which means almost never.

Fate/Stay Night's branching path's are pretty simple
Most choices you can make only lead to slight deviations and the bad ends that result from most of them are pretty fast. There's only a handful of points in which making a choice leads to a bad end later on and you have to be going out of your way to do them.
The other routes are unlocked in a linear order and the choices that lead to them don't appear until you unlock them.

Sex scenes are almost always bad in VNs and I usually ctrl my way through the,, so I don't care if I miss those as long as plot or character essential stuff isn't being cut out. And someone will probably make a patch to at least uncensor the CGs. I'd still buy this if the translation quality is decent.

I really just don't like content being cut even if it's Nasu's horrible sex scenes.
... while I don't like when content gets cut in whatever media I use (that includes 18+ scenes) I think I would be able to withstand getting those cut
I still shudder whenever I remember them. Translating them will do that to you too.
Also, this can be a very interesting experiment, with the way they're handling this. If it goes well, I believe that this can open the path to more translated novels, even if most of those will come with its 18+ content cut.

Well I was wondering if the ESRB rating was to try and get stores to stock the games since I don't really see any other reason to be rated by the ESRB.
True. I don't keep with or even have much of an interest in VNs, but I was instantly intrigued after seeing it mentioned in a GAF thread and looking up the website. Maybe I've taken too much art history, but the style, world, and color hooked me right away. Perhaps they know this, and are willing to risk alienating the purists in an effort to grab others like me.
I'm not against 18+ content in games like this, but I'm curious if they're needed in this particular example. Again, I haven't played to any yet, and I doubt I'd read them correctly anyway. I've heard Fate/Stay Night on the Vita is edited, but this also changed the story quite a bit. If they can remove the excessive scenes from the website gallery, but keep others like this (SFW, don't worry) and carry/complete the love story just as well, then I don't see much of a problem. In my limited experience though, the sex scenes in KS did contain important character development, but that may not be the case for this game. The bulk of the ones in Yume Miru Kusuri could certainly have been toned down or otherwise omitted without affecting anything else.
I do wonder what spurred them to pursue an all-ages rating with this game, maybe it was just the luck of the draw with this new company. It's funny that the one VN I'm interested in is suddenly announced for localization and editing, when it seems every other eroge I don't care about is available for purchase online, uncut in English. Talk about a Baader-Meinhof moment!
As an aside, I wonder if they'll localize the Flight Diary too.
So my copy of Saya no Uta which I ordered last year finally arrived yesterday. And then I couldn't bring myself to play it (it's supposed to be really creepy, right?) so I immediately gave it to a friend to keep it away from me for at least a week.
But now I want to play it...

Interesing... I don't see too many VNs like this translated and to be sold at retail (censorship included!) Am I wrong in saying this is a rare thing? Or am I just not well informed about the western market for VNs?
Anyways, this has now been put on my radar. Hopefully it's worth checking out.

That's probably true. It's kind of silly for them to not release both versions, but then, it's not too late for them to release it at a later, is it? H-Scenes aren't my cup of tea, but then, I haven't really had a cup before, so I wouldn't know for sure. My best guess is nope, though. It'd just get too awkward for me. :/
And a T rating, huh? That's not too bad, I guess... I wonder how much was cut out and how large an impact it has on the story. (If any)
Same here. I played Tsukihime with the patch that removed the H-scenes and i didn't miss them one bit.

I'm not surprised by that T rating. Most visual novels don't have content that should be deemed M (except, of course, the 18+ scenes)
That pretty much sums up how I feel about this. I'll probably pick it up still if I have the spare cash for it.
This is my stance as well. I don't like censorship in my media, even if all it cuts is some awkward sex scene.

It's not censorship, saying something like that is stupid.
How do you call the removal of content to get a lower rating? I call it censorship, but my English is what it is, maybe there's a better word to define it?

I usually refer to that kind of stuff as censorship. But I think the kind of censorship he had in mind was the kind where things are blurred out or blocked from view.
Both are censorship in my books... :/

Technically it's only censorship if someone else forces them to take it out. This is just a business decision to cut content.

Yes, editing.
You see, these stories are improved by the removal of pornography. Editing removes bad elements of stories all the time to improve them. You don't call an editor censors.
Plus these elements were only included because of the stupid nature of the Japanese PC game market, where a lot of people expect porn in them because why else would you play a PC game?

The CGs could probably be patched back in pretty easily. Or if they changed things enough, someone could rip out the script and patch it into the Japanese release. This seems to be getting enough attention that someone will probably try to do it.

I'd be surprised if somebody DIDN'T make the patch for the Japanese game. With all the people complaining about the censors or "edits" or whatever you want to call it, the only logical fix for ppl wanting their H-scenes is a patch.
I'm actually thinking MoeNovel will come out with a patch or dlc for those truly wanting the Ero back in their game. I wouldn't get it, but I'm sure something like that would sway a lot or the people who are on the fence because of the content removal.

I'm starting to feel incredibly optimistic about this game an the future of VNs..... And at the same time, I have a terrible feeling that my optimism will be crushed.
And when I finally decide to try and download the demo, the game files are being updated... Great.... -__- I'm guessing it's either a script update, or they're removing the ero content that seemed to sneak in with the demo. :/
I'll have to check this game out (If My Heart Had Wings). I believe this is unusual as well because the last game to get a ESRB rating was one of Hirameki's games. And all ages, still checking it out. Was the sex REALLY needed? Or just added in because of established institutions deem it? And I'm not opposed to ero content, but if it serves no purpose....

Hahah of course! I meant the all ages ones too. Everyone knows that sex > violence as far as the ESRB is concerned, and some all ages stuff isn't explicit but also has some not so subtle content and such that might be deemed overly offensive. Like 13+, 16+, 18+.
In this case, I think they should start looking to localizing some of the better generally T-M equivalent PS3, and PSP/Vita VNs that come out all the time. There's a larger market there, and as a person who uses a mac, I have to say, it would be a lot less hassle! Plus I'd like to see some Otome games over here, and it'll be a while before they start getting any eroge versions over here for whatever reason..
On another note, I would really like to see some more "classic" or well known VNs making it over. Kiminozo, Key games (though I don't particularly like some of the more famous ones), etc

You can get away with murder on a T rating. Shadow Hearts II had the infamous 'that is one giant pussy' line.

It's funny that they are going to these lengths when sex is actually the main seller for VNs. There's a reason MangaGamer sells all that nukige and the All-Ages version of KiraKira was outsold 10:1. This isn't going to reach the mass market either.
For the people who has played If My Heart Had Wings, is there anything that makes this VN unique? Or are people mostly excited for it because it is getting an official release in the US?

Have you ever heard of a NIS game called Soul Nomad & The World Eaters?
That game got away with murder, rape, a totally twisted option for New Game+ and who-knows-what else. It's still rated T.
Seeing that, I'm surprised that they didn't gunned for E10+ :lol
