English voice actor of Kiryu in Gaiden is being replaced by Youtuber Yong Yea

The best is when the fucking danikast start and you manage to find a fast combat encounter nearby to force her shut the fuck up.

Japanese games usually direct CG sequences so that the characters don't talk over each other, making subs a perfectly viable option.

I understand English pretty well, but in a game like High On Life where everyone is talking over everyone else all the time and especially during the busiest sections, I couldn't get a single complete sentence.

Subs are a non-issue in Yakuza. The Japanese dub is simply too good for "I don't understand the language" to be a problem.
 
Saw a comparison video between Kiryu's new English voice and the old one. As I expected, it's fucking terrible. Yong's an astoundingly horrible VA and I'm not sure how he keeps getting work.

He sounds too nerdy, but I think part of the fault here is that someone in production decided that they should find a guy who sounds as close as possible to the original english dub:



Notice how similar Kiryu's speech cadence and enunciation are to what's being posted here.

This was done on purpose and it was highly annoying in HoL. I instantly changed the setting to make the gun speak as little as possible.
 
Eh, the people that are making a stink about it didn't plan on playing dubbed anyway, and the people that are playing dubbed probably won't care enough to make a stink. Regardless of how Yong's voice sounds, this could be a director issue where they just rolled with it.

Yeah, this really sucks for big fans that played in dub that want consistency. I'm guessing he just wasn't interested or wasn't available.

I once mixed cattle blood bought on discount from the local butcher and hamster shit and made a very economic sort of paint. I legit am curious on the thought process that went inside the mind of the Person In Charge at Sega to actually think "hey i know this utuber named Yongyea he will be the best fit for Kiryu English voice"

I remember how cocky he was on twitter when this was announced and some people weren't thrilled. He said something along the lines of "I earned Kiryu". Funny how shit his voice acting ended up being.

There's been a big push recently in the West for animated characters and their voice actors to match races. You can tell by the Yakuza 7 casting they tried their hardest to find as many Asians as they could for a game that has dozens of them. My guess is that they didn't want one of the most iconic Asian video game characters in history to be voiced by a white man anymore. The same thing was done with Chun-Li in SF6. They dumped a veteran voice actress so they could champion that Chun-Li "finally has an Asian-American voice actor!" I know it sounds crazy, but this is how these people think and operate

Now as for why they specifically chose Yong, my guess would because he's well known but also cheap. His Mr Beast argument is quite disingenuous as he would be way out of Sega's price range. Mr Beast is more famous than Sega is at this point. Also, it was just announced that he got a role in the Persona 3 remake. So maybe he just knows someone or has a fan at Sega of America. It can't be on merit, I mean just listen to that.
 
Damn, he's getting dragged across Twitter. People are posting screenshots and videos of him being very critical of Chris Pratt's voice acting as Mario.. lol

He didn't earn shit, who let this man cook.

They should have brought back the og Y1 dub Kiryu, I don't even look foward to P3 dub if Yong's also playing a major character there. His voice acting single handedly is bringing down great VAs, like Ichiban's.

He speaks clearly (mostly), and can give a correct tone and emotion to his lines. What the fuck are you expecting?
