The cancelation of the NHL season might rank as the stupidest move in the history of sports. I doubt they ever recover...and it isn't like they were in a great position prior to this bullshit to begin with.

So ESPN declined to pay $60 million for something that, at the current time, doesn't exist? Nothing really hard about that decision.

I love hockey (Canadian Duh..), but I honestly hope the NHL folds and a new league is born. It would be a little sad if the Stanley Cup couldn't be purchased.. but I could get over it.

Well seeing as Lord Stanley's mug predates the NHL, I'm not sure the league "owns" it so much as its rights. There was even talk from Adrienne Clarkson this year to give it to the Women's World Championship team (U.S. or Canada), but it was awash in those pesky rights issues, as well as the fact that I don't think it was a particularly popular concept.

If the NHL died and took the Cup with it, I think you'd find some hasty gallows construction in a few Canadian cities followed by warm invites to former league execs and players.
