Etrian Odyssey Community Thread: The Ongoing Adventures of Fight and Heal

If it does have a touch screen, holding it vertically to do mapping could work just fine based on how the controllers look. It would be unusual to have a new tablet-like device without some sort of touch screen these days. But I'm not sure how that'd be compatible with docking to a TV, though.

I love the mapping feature, but the primary appeal of the series to me has always been party customization, encounter design, and combat mechanics. It will be a lesser game without the mapping, but not to the point where I'd lose interest.

This is how I feel. I think they can incorporate mapping without a stylus/dedicated touch screen if they're clever.

The death of dual screens was kind of inevitable I guess. Hopefully the series will adapt fine. Ditching the map drawing would be such a big and tragic departure for me.

I'm actually playing Etrian Odyssey IV (maybe three or four hours). I bought it almost a year or less but until recently I want to play it.

I am not unfamiliar about what I can expect from this game, beause my favorite videogame series is Shin Megami Tensei, and I have a appeal to the first-person ones, but this game is hard... and I love it.

I still struggle to understand the mechanics and how to choose the skills/parties, but the rewarding feel when you explore the dungeons and be capable of survive the enemies attack is something I needed from a game.

The music is nice. I was reading about how they changed the music for this game, so I will listen the music from the other games :p

Three of my characters are level 20 and had enough points to get various veteran skills.

Feels good.

Now I can kick ass the boss the first labyrinth without fear will kill me after a long battle <_<

I just finished the original Etrian Odyssey on DS. It's the game I've owned the longest that I never completed.

I'm curious to see what kind of improvements they've made to later iterations of the series. I would really enjoy a quick save option. I don't know if I'll be able to catch up on the series as they are already remaking the original games now. There's something about the methodical nature of the game that I enjoy so I want to continue with the series at a later date.

EO:IV and Untold 2 are both way easier to get into than the first game on the original DS and have a bunch of quality of life improvements. I'd recommend either of those.

The games are not connected storywise so you can just get the latest game and try it out. There has been a lot of improvements since the first game.

Not for long it would seem.

Glad that you started with the right game.

I'd personally suggest to play III next, since there's no news of it getting a remake yet, so until then it might be hard to get back to it after having experienced the improvements of IV and the Untold games.

I've been listening to the EOV soundtrack recently and my god that is the best final battle theme in the series. I almost regret spoiling myself on that cause it would have been amazing to actually hear it in game.

Ha. If anything, this will obviously push EOV's localization even further back.

It's like people had been saying: Atlus USA has gotten a whole lot on their plate with their own titles and Sega's to handle, and it's only been increasing localization gaps more and more. The important part is that today, it was stated that Atlus USA has been notably upping their production staff for Persona 5, so this could carry over positively for future titles as well.

Way to crush my heart =(

I wonder what's the lifespan of 3DS games after the Switch though. Releasing after March kinda sucks.

I really liked 7th dragon but would take EOV over it and all future yakuza games combined. Wasting atlus usa staff on sega stuff smh.

If I were going to start playing this series, should I get the original or remake version of the first one?

Untold in Classic mode is basically the original game but with improvements. Unless you want to go back and experience the original, I would suggest playing Untold.

Okay, so does it tell you when you finish the map of a floor, or is there any way to know how close you are?
I've been through B2F multiple times and I can't seem to get it complete..
Do spaces with treasure chests or inanimate boulders on them count as spaces on the map?
Do I have to get past the white crystal to finish it? I didn't need to on the first floor...

Unlike Persona Q there's no tell if you've finished a map. And there's no real reason to fully complete a map except for completionist's sake. The only reason why there is a map completion thing on the 1st floor is because it's a tutorial quest to teach people about mapmaking.

Also yes the crystal doors are part of the floor.

Really? I think I misunderstood a tutorial thing then...
I thought that finishing the map allowed you to warp to the staircase.
Thanks, now I can stop worrying about it.

Though you do need to complete a certain amount of the map in order to unlock the stair warp, you'll almost certainly have enough mapped to get that unlock by the time you reach those stairs just by going through the labyrinth normally. You don't need to map every square of the whole floor.
