Etrian Odyssey Community Thread: The Ongoing Adventures of Fight and Heal

Looking at Necromancer and Dragoon skills, one of them makes the other kinda useless... Though I could just go for a healer necromancer maybe? I dunno I wasn't expecting this demo, I'm ill prepared. I'm still playing EO2U... Scylla a bitch.

Picking a party and naming everybody is always the first challenge. I think I'll start with a FMP/WB setup to start with, even if it seems a little boring. I'll have a Marusao to generate hits, a Fencer to chase hits, a Pugilist for binds, a Warlock for elemental damage, and a Botanist for healing. I've been keeping away from EO V spoilers, so I'll go in blind and see what happens.

Went Fencer, Masurao in front with Botanist , Dragoon and Warlock bring up the rear.

First battle Masurao gets hit by first enemy and drops to 4 hp. Oh boy here we go. Wonder if my classic inability to make party chemistry will strike again in this game. There's a party of me that wants to be crazy and go without a mage in this game but I know I'll regret it at some point.

Link skills seem harder to make work in this game compared to IV. They only seem to trigger when I use elemental skills of the same type, and don't do initial damage like in other games, unless I'm missing something. As a trade off they do seem to hit a bit harder, but that's fairly useless in the early game when you run out of TP so quickly.

I think I'll be trying:
Masurao/Harbinger
Warlock/Dragoon/Botanist

Masurao should be the main damage dealer(I ran a link Landsknecht in EOIV, so I'll pass on the Fencer in this game). Harbinger has statuses and can lower enemies resistance to them. I think EOIII was only time I had a mage class, so the Warlock will be a nice change. I probably would have passed on a tank this time, but the Dragoon is a backrow tank that uses guns, that's pretty cool and they have great designs. And the Botanist, the one that poisons everything(and maybe heals sometimes, I guess).

I'm not sure how well it will work out, but that's part of the fun of a new EO game. I don't have binds right now, but I tend to like statuses more anyways, so there may be some situations where things will be harder without them but I'll manage.

Replaced my Warlock with Rover.

This is perfect. Having that falcon as an extra party member is the kinda shit I love and the passive heal after every turn, wew.

I thought it was out in October?

The fullgame is for october. Yesterday was launched the demo.

By the way, I don't remember how far I was into the EO IV demo, but damn, that was loong play, and the real reason I buy the game. This series give me life, at least I can buy a full-price this last game ;_;

Heading to the 3rd floor now. Damn I forgot how much I love these games and I'm loving the increased amount of 'flavor events' is what I'm calling them as you're exploring.

I said "fuck it" with regards to planning my team and just went with designs I liked. Probably going to grind up lvl 10s in every class in the demo anyways. Main team can be decided once the full game comes out :D

The flavor logs are a great addition, though I wish they were stored in some sort of journal so that you could re-read then again.

raise of hands, who else just played that voice line repeatedly as they cycled through the choices
I actually got stuck on the guy who yells "Party time" and "Dance Suckah" and the other one who yells out "Ready Bastards!?". I know games rated 12 can include "mild bad language" but it still struck me as weird. Naturally I picked both of those voices - Bastard-guy yells "Shit" when he dies too.

Until you said this I assumed they were going into one. It would have been such an obvious thing to include one alongside the quest and mission logs :(

I do find it a bit sad that there doesn't seem to be any more classes to unlock through the game, as it carried the feeling of a shiny new toy to play around with. Hopefully the specialization system more than makes up for it.

I feel the same way. When they announced the race/class thing I assumed there would be a new race that joined halfway through, bringing new classes with it.

Sadly that is not the case, but I think the Racials and Specializations might make up for that.

I'm considering getting a 2ds XL or 3ds XL just for Etrian (and maybe SMT) games.

Questions:

1) Does 3d affect Etrian games? I probably don't care about 3D anyway, just curious.

2) Do you still need a stylus for XLs? I tried using a 2DS briefly and the bottom screen was so small i found it difficult to use. [i'm not a fan of stylus use, since I like to hold portables with both hands]. Or is stylus use pretty much a prereq for Etrian?

3) Is there any difference between various 3ds XL models? I like the NES one, but i'm curious if any tech changes [battery life, whatever] matter.

4) If you were going to pick up 4 DRPG games, which would they be? I was thinking Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl for sure. And probably SMT IV. Two slots left? Hardcore, difficult DRPGs [turn based, complex dungeons, etc] please.

1. I believe it does, I never use 3D, but I vaguely recall it working when I accidentally turned it on.

2. I would certainly say so, it would be pretty difficult to draw the maps with your finger, even on an XL. I don't think you can draw them using buttons, though I haven't tried. This is for Etrian though, other games (like SMT 4) mostly don't require a stylus.

3. The only differences are between the New 3DS line and the og 3DS line. The New 3DSes are slightly more powerful and will run some games better. The difference for the majority of games isn't huge, but it can make a big difference for some (Smash, Monster Hunter, Hyrule Warriors).

4. I would grab all four Etrians on the system lol. But assuming we want to diversify a bit: I really enjoyed SMT 4 and its sequel, they were great. They're remaking SMT Strange Journey next year, so that is worth a look. Persona Q was enjoyable, it is essentially an Etrian game though, and it looks like it will be getting a sequel. I also really enjoyed 7th Dragon III Code VFD.

i'm playing EO:U classic mode(expert) and stuck on fenrir, so i'm reviewing my team. Running a (front) Pr/Ro (rear) Tr/Me/Su team. I'm new to the series and coming from Dungeon travelers 2 Im running almost the same build (no magical princess so i chose survivalist). I'm getting the feeling that Survivalists are bad and that it's essential to able to give all 3 types of damage. My output is only piercing&slashing but the ronin is dipping into elemental damage but otherwise it's also low damage. In short, Is it necessary to have a Landsknecht for bash damage or can i swap out my survivalist for something else?

Your Protector can equip axes, which are bash damage, as well as the various damage dealing Shield skills. Anyways, physical damage attributes are less important than elemental ones. I'd say your party is fine, but I'd either give a bow to your Troubadour, or have them move to the front to increase your damage output. You're right in that Survivalist isn't particularly strong in this game, but it's still plenty possible to finish the game with one. If you still want to swap it out, I'd suggest an Alchemist or a Dark Hunter.

Thank you for the responses. I'll look into a new 3ds... don't know how expensive they are. Are the new 3ds XL? I think I value xl over all other things, heck, I wish it was tablet size.

I discovered 7th dragon after I posted, and that is definitely one I want. So etrian mg, sMt 4, 7th dragon, and... whichever etrian comes after mg, which if I remember my research right is Lott, but I'll double chdck.

Really sad about the stylus thing, I really hate using themy. Oh well.

The only reason I might be curious about the new3ds is that... um.... xeno something rpg. Zeno? I don't know, it was something people liked. Maybe hyrule because I think that's musou. But mostly I only care about drpgs.

Questions:

1) Does 3d affect Etrian games? I probably don't care about 3D anyway, just curious.
The 3D layers character portraits over backgrounds, and the backgrounds/dungeon locales have depth.
It's nifty when it works, but if you're not bothered about it you won't miss much by not having it on. I generally have to turn it off because it gives me splitting headaches.
2) Do you still need a stylus for XLs? I tried using a 2DS briefly and the bottom screen was so small i found it difficult to use. [i'm not a fan of stylus use, since I like to hold portables with both hands]. Or is stylus use pretty much a prereq for Etrian?
You need a stylus. You get used to holding it.
More seriously, drawing the map is a big part of Etrian, so if you can involve yourself with it you'll want to use the stylus.
V has a walls-and-floors automap option but I can't recall if any others did. It's not something I'd ever have wanted to use.
3) Is there any difference between various 3ds XL models? I like the NES one, but i'm curious if any tech changes [battery life, whatever] matter.
The 3DSXL is the "larger" version of the original 3DS. It can't play Xenoblade.
The New 3DSXL is the larger version of the upgraded New 3DS. It has more RAM and a little analogue stick thing on the right hand side. It can play Xenoblade, and certain games run better on the Newer hardware.
The New 2DSXL has the extra RAM and the little extra analogue stick thing but it doesn't have 3D screens.

I'm not sure about battery life differences.
Disclaimer: It's possible (or even likely) that Etrian Odyssey V will unseat one of these, but it's not out yet and I only just started playing the demo so I can't really guarantee that yet.

So, my 4 recommendations:
1. Etrian Odyssey IV
Interesting classes, good class balance.
Make your own party, explore the world, deal with foes and other hazards, meet new people, get involved in their problems.
You map out the overworld as well as the dungeons, but using the same perspective (first person from an airship, filling in the map on the lower screen). It's a gimmick, but it breaks things up well.

2. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
(Okay I'm cheating because it's not out yet, but I really loved Strange Journey and I'm hoping the remake will be good, even if the newer graphics look icky to me).
Join/Lead a UN task force sent to Antarctica to investigate an unusual spatial/dimensional distortion full of demons. Create a party of demons to help you explore, and fight or negotiate with the ones you encounter. You can fuse them and stuff too, because it's an SMT game. Law/Chaos/Neutral route options, also because it's an SMT game.
Dungeons are broken down into Sectors, some of them are more interesting to explore than others. I'm one of the people who liked Eridanus (which is the 'hey, you like teleports, right?' section) though so...
(Couldn't find many screens, so I took these from those old/new graphic comparison trailers they stuck on youtube)

3. Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: The Fafnir Knight
Classic Mode where you make your own party, or Story Mode where you have set characters, voice acting, and a heavier focus on plot.
Explore labyrinths, develop your party, make maps, cook food, lure dinosaurs into pits.

4. 7th Dragon Code VFD
Dragons have arrived on earth. Create teams of thoroughly weird character classes with stylish Miwa Shirow artwork and become a time-traveling dragon hunter trying to find a way to save the future. You run around a 3D field, and the fights are turn based with cool 3D graphics, but it's still a DRPG at heart.

(And a bonus DS game because I'm a cheat) The Dark Spire
(I'm assuming you don't have a regular DS here, ignore me if I'm wrong)
Enter The Dark Spire. Search for the Mage who rules it. It's oldschool and somewhat punishing, with descriptions that ooze character. I don't think I ever finished it, but I loved what I played and really should go back to it.
Atmospheric graphics or barebones wireframe, the choice is yours.

And because I'm even more of a cheat, a brief rundown of the other 3DS DRPGs that I can think of:
Denpa Men
There are three of these things but I have no idea what they're like because I've never played one. From what I understand you "catch" Denpa Men using the 3DS camera, and then take them into dungeons.
Elminage Original
A port of the one that came out on PSP.
Etrian Odyssey V
The newest in the series, due out soon. Lots of new classes with great artwork. Interesting skill trees with specialisations that unlock later.I only just started playing the demo, I can't say much yet.
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl
Remake of the Original Etrian Odyssey. Story mode with set characters and voice acting, Classic mode where you make your own party. I didn't like the story mode. The revamped classic mode was okay. Untold 2 is better.
Persona Q
Cute and colourful EO variant with characters from Persona 3 and 4, so you'll enjoy it more if you like those games or their characters. Most of the game is easier than it probably should be because the balance is iffy and the game is easy to break, but it's still enjoyable.
Picdun 2: Witch's Curse
First person DRPG where you explore as an archer, a mage, or a girl with visible boobs a whip. You attack using button press combinations.
SMT: Soul Hackers
SMT with a sort of cyberpunk aesthetic. You're a hacker with a hunch of online hacker friends who investigate demon attacks, because of course you are and of course they do.
SMTIV
Not really a dungeon crawler, but feels like one in places. 3D exploration and 2D battles, along with a weird 'you are the moving icon on the map' thing later on.
Lengthy RPG (and its sequel) where you gather and fuse demons and interfere with the world in general. Chaos/Neutral/Law routes for added replay value, but going neutral will probably need a guide.
SMTIV Apocalypse
Sort of Alternate-End / Sort of Sequel to SMTIV. It veers off somewhere before the completion of the previous game's neutral route and introduces a bunch of new characters. Gather demons, explore, interfere with the world in general.
Unchained Blades
Same as the PSP game.

And, you know, if you're picking up a 3DS anyway:
Devil Survivor (both of them).
They're SRPGs with grid based movement, turn based attacks, and SMT demons.
In the first (Devil Survivor Overclocked) You and your friends have found you can summon demons using your handheld device. Unfortunately you're not the only ones, so the government have sealed off your city. You also gained the ability to see how long people have until they die, and it seems like that caps out at 7 days. Team up with a variety of characters, and achieve a whole bunch of different endings (overclocked also added some extras to some of those endings)
In the second a mysterious website warns people of their impending deaths, allowing a group of friends to escape theirs... and end up in a contract with demons instead. They then find themselves fighting an alien demonic invasion and trying to prevent the imminent deaths of their companions. There are multiple endings, and some of the dialogue options are hilarious.
Mystery Dungeon games.
I recall that you like roguelikes, and I think I remember you picking up Shiren, so yeah, more Mystery Dungeons.
The Etrian one isn't great, but there are Pokemon ones that are pretty good.

Your Protector can equip axes, which are bash damage, as well as the various damage dealing Shield skills. Anyways, physical damage attributes are less important than elemental ones. I'd say your party is fine, but I'd either give a bow to your Troubadour, or have them move to the front to increase your damage output. Thanks for the advice ill try a little bit more before with a front row TR before trying an AL/DH. I just wasnt sure how critical a strong bash dmg dealer was in this game and, in EO:U1 at least, axes are Landsknecht only.

I kinda wanna get the demo to get a head start on messing with character creation...

But I also don't want to get started on the game and then essentially take a month long break...
