I feel a deep sadness about what happened to Rareware. Nintendo didn't value what they had, and Microsoft never had a clue what to do with it.
Nintendo probably hates the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy they never made a proper remake or a remastered collection, even though it would've made them a fortune today. Miyamoto's probably still bitter that those Western-made games crushed even their top-tier Japanese platformers. They had a freaking gold mine in their hands and tried to recreate it with Retro Studios, but the magic was gone. All they pulled off were Mario-style sidescrolling clones with that awful preschool storybook art style and called it Donkey Kong Country Returns / Tropical Freeze.
Then Microsoft got Rareware, but by then it was already worn out and beaten down by Nintendo. It was like marrying a hot, depressed woman who used to get abused by her ex, but instead of helping her get better, they just made her worse, more depressed, and now she's not even attractive anymore. They couldn't keep any decent talent around and wasted every single classic franchise.
It's pathetic to see them celebrating the studio's anniversary with some generic joystick post when they haven't released anything truly new or exciting in years. Honestly, it probably won't be long before the studio shuts down completely and becomes a sad little museum.
