Europe get barebacked again! PSN Download Speeds set to be dramatically reduced due to COVID-19

In an official statement from CEO Jim Ryan, it's confirmed that Sony is now working with internet providers in Europe to preserve internet access. "We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access," Ryan writes.

So what does this mean for us as PlayStation 4 users? Well, it sounds like the PlayStation Network is going to be restricted to some degree. The statement says: "Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community, and their doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone."

This news in addition to the fact that major April releases like FF7R and RE3 will likely be more commonly bought digitally due to delays in shipments mean your PS4 is gonna download slower than a cripple!

Where do I stand here? I don't care, human lives mean more to me than virtual data files so I can live with this personally, just gonna have to have my PS4 in rest mode like no tomorrow.

Gamers expecting to be treated like first class citizens during a pandemic is laughable. For what? So they can play CoD?

fuck your videogames right now
Calm down, Ed.

It's scary and dumbfounding to think the Internet is going to deteriorate because of a single virus regardless of the isolation......

2020's will not be a good decade.

Wait, so this is due to a request from ISP's rather than Sony themselves throttling bandwidth due to unprecedented server load?

Yes. Netflix and other platforms are also reducing stream quality to reduce bandwidth loads.

Apart from coughing up the population of Phlegmville, I'm doing okay, country is in lockdown so people are going nuts, a local Tesco near my town got it's roof torn off with a digger to try and steal money lmaoo.

Hope you and your loved ones are good!

Is this for real haha? Please post a news source for this.

I don't get it. Did ISPs even request this?

The majority of people now logging on from home are the same people no longer doing so from the office. Vodafone may be experiencing an uptick in demand of 50%, but there aren't suddenly 50% more people trying to access the internet.

That's why some ISPs and tech firms are confidently saying there is plenty of capacity in the network.

Fair enough then, its for the best in that case since many people have to work from home and kids are being schooled online. Disregard my previous post.

With everyone cooped up at home it's quite obvious that there will be bandwidth issues. I have fios and during peak hours I've been experiencing issues.

I'll be happy if the internet doesn't crash...

no google = rioting in the streets

still, the same people are going home after work and watch netflix, download an iOS update, CoD Update etc. there is much more going on then, I don't think the load is THAT bigger compared to that.
Still haven't seen an ISP actually request anything like that from Netflix etc. is there anything at all?

Netflix will take new actions to reduce bit rates of streams in Europe following a conversation between the European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton and CEO Reed Hastings, the company announced on Thursday.

Didn't Netflix already lower the quality of their feeds?

These companies doing whatever they can to lessen bandwidth is a wise move ... a functional internet infrastructure is paramount

What a dumb take.
Online gaming doesn't take that much bandwidth. Streaming and other shit take like 70% of bandwidth in Europe and the US.

he European Commission is putting pressure on Netflix and other streaming platforms to switch to standard definition during periods of peak demand as the coronavirus crisis puts unprecedented load on Internet infrastructure.

Across the European Union — a region with around 445M citizens — it's likely many millions of office workers will switch to teleworking, as countries impose quarantine measures and instruct people to work from home wherever possible. The European Commission itself, which employs around 32,000 people, moved all non-critical staff to remote work at the start of this week.

Yesterday Thierry Breton, the commissioner for the EU's internal market who is also a former CEO of France Telecom, tweeted that he'd spoke to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to make the case for standard definition streaming by default during the COVID-19 public health crisis.

Netflix has confirmed that it will comply with this request. In a statement first sent to Business Insider and confirmed to TechCrunch, a rep for Netflix says:

Following the discussions between Commissioner Thierry Breton and Reed Hastings – and given the extraordinary challenges raised by the coronavirus – Netflix has decided to begin reducing bit rates across all our streams in Europe for 30 days. We estimate that this will reduce Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25 percent while also ensuring a good quality service for our members

So fishy.

There must be more to this.

Thanks. Still, "European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton", not sure how much he knows about the ISPs infrastructure. Anyway, we have to deal with it.

Here in Italy with the country on lockdown internet usage has skyrocketed, working from home and studying from home has really put a toll on the infrastructure, I'm all for a bit on bandwidth restrictions (since it is only on work hours) if it can help others.

No problem. Yup, everyone will have to deal with it. I'm sure similar caps will hit North America.

Thierry Breton was the head of France Telecom in the early 2000s and was very recently the chairman of Atos, a multinational IT company. I imagine he knows a fair bit.

Most of the stream services are doing this as well, so no big deal.
That's correct, practically every streaming service have lowered their bit-rate in Europe.
The way this is worded is cringe worthy though neither is it their job - "to help preserve access for the entire internet community".
The government does that, there are better ways to help (Italy is being hit hard ATM, Apple is assisting there).

Yes, gaming does not drain bandwidth as much as Netflix and porn...

Still pretty much expect everything to scale back a bit however until Verizon manages to buyout a bunch of foreclosed homes to build more infrastructure... which will probably happen...

Verizon Porter

This really is Death Stranding... fucking kojima
