European Super League (Football/Soccer)

For me, this is very simple.

Every football fan in Europe boycotts these teams, and enjoys their national leagues without these 12 teams. Then these corporate globalized behemoths can rot and enjoy their group stage matches in Riyadh taking photos with Bin Salmon.

It does depend on how many sheep decide to follow this new thing but speaking to hardcore fans at work, at least locally there is zero support for this shit and they are not going to continue following the teams if this goes through. It all depends on the fans overseas now....
The overseas fans will lap this up.
They have no investment in the local areas or the sport.
These clubs are just brands that they like to rep on social media.

Sitting at home spending Fortnite V bucks on one screen and streaming Super League on another.

"Oh, has Messi scored? I'm repping him on Instagram so better go and post about that while posing with my Barcelona merch."

Think of the console wars on here. That's Super League football. Not people who are actually interested in the sport just a bunch of wankers repping their preferred brand.

So I feel sorry for the actual fans. Guys who grew up with their da taking them along to the match at 3pm on a Saturday. Anyone who has ever been to Barcelona or Liverpool knows that these are not just brands, not just football clubs. Local people fuckin LOVE those clubs.

Its a shame.

Can't wait to buy a big foam hand and a hot dog and a few slim jims for later as I squeeze my fat arse into my seat to cheer on the Denver Red Devils as they take on the Shanghai Spurs.

When The Spurs where attacking and we all shouted "let's go defence" I almost spilled my jumbo Pepsi all over my commemorative match t-shirt.

The half time shows will be amazing and I wonder what movie trailers they will show in the ad breaks...

Shite.

Remembering my days at elementary school, when we "awarded" a penalty every three corners. That looks like a fun rule for the new sport. Also draws are boring, remove them.

I really wish we had something like the NBA League Pass here where I can just pay for the LFC games for the season. Let's face it the black market of IPTV subs and VPNs is lucrative.

I would introduce a rule in which when a team reaches 10 fouls, a penalty is given to the other team. That would make the game more fluid, as teams couldn't rely so much on fouling the adversary to stop attacks.

A lot of Barça games you see the adversary making between 14 and 20+ fouls. It's fucking ridiculous.

Our own league is shite to say the least, but if anything we got right is all the clubs are properties of the football association. You simply can't pull such BS and the president of the club will get sacked the next day and forbidden from involving in football again. Anyway, there is a reason why I only watch Manchester United. :lollipop_downcast_sweat:

Barca themselves would give away about 37 penalties a season under this system.

(That's the least in La Liga but still...)

With VAR this would just be awful as every foul would need reviewing as it could potentially add up to a penalty later on.

In addition it might encourage even more diving.

Your reasoning is basically: let's ban penaltys because they encourage diving.

I would be ok with that, because that means more goals are being made.

But obviously teams would adjust and commit less fouls. Therefore less interrumptions, more fluidity and more attacking plays.

With VAR this would just be awful as every foul would need reviewing as it could potentially add up to a penalty later on.

That's like saying every foul now would need reviewing as it could potentially add up to a player being sent off later on.

It's obviously not the case.

Well, when the proto Champions League started in the 50's and Barça was invited to play in it, the club declined to participate because the fans didn't care about it.

Madrid then went and won the 5 first editions and turns out 60 years later that tournament was actually like the best thing ever.

Sometimes people lack perspective. And somehow this mass hysteria sounds a lot like it.

Hysterical is the dirty dozen reaction to solve their mismanagement and huge debt accumulated.

Incredibly based team. Portugal, probably the best talent pool per capita in europe, would be beyond fucked if one of their clubs was able to access this league.

How have you managed to interpret my post as that? A dive in the penalty box is a bit different to 10 regular fouls = penalty.

Any team needing one more foul to get a penalty and in extra time aren't going to be more inclined to dive to win the game? Of course they would.

It's an incredibly stupid idea. You think it's good for the game that every fan, pundit, coaching staff and players on the pitch need to keep a running tally of the number of fouls given for and against their team?

Can potentially be given a penalty because a player has foul throwed? Or was a toenail offline. Can you imagine that in a final of an important cup competition?

Absurd.

Problem is we're not talking about the "good" Americans here, but the ones that real Americans hate as well.
Look if I could be wealthy enough to own a giant football team I would. I doubt I would try to destroy the very fabric of football by creating a new league. But I would certainly work to capitalize on my team and increase profits.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Chairman and CEO of Paris Saint-Germain, has today been re-elected to the UEFA Executive Committee as European Club Association (ECA) representative for an additional three-year term of office.
Speaking at the 45th Ordinary UEFA Congress in Montreux, Switzerland, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi stated: "I am honored by the trust placed in me by my colleagues of the ECA to represent them on the UEFA Executive Committee. European football is at a pivotal moment, in which all stakeholders should work together; in good faith, with dignity, and to protect the game we all love.
Commenting on the club’s position regarding the latest developments in European club competitions Nasser Al-Khelaïfi added:
Paris Saint-Germain holds the firm belief that football is a game for everyone. I have been consistent on this since the very beginning. As a football club, we are a family and a community; whose fabric is our fans - I believe we shouldn’t forget this.
‘’There is a clear need to advance the existing UEFA competition model, presented by UEFA yesterday and concluding 24 months’ of extensive and collaborative consultation across the whole European football landscape. We believe that any proposal without the support of UEFA - an organisation that has been working to progress the interests of European football for nearly 70 years - does not resolve the issues currently facing the football community, but is instead driven by self-interest. Paris Saint-Germain will continue to work with UEFA, the European Club Association and all stakeholders of the football family - based on the principles of good faith, dignity and respect for all.

Seeing all this unfold made me think: Well maybe our league in Argentina ain't that bad after all. Still a league where local fans have a say and can vote the president of their club for better or worse.

The downside of course is that since clubs are not supposed to turn a profit, they are managed like mom and pop stores. It was enough until the 80s or early 90s. But nowadays the model is totally obsolete and since the Bosman rulling the league is basically a one dollar store for european clubs. Recently even those not talented enough for Europe but still wanting to make a quick buck go to the MLS or Mexico. And as an unwritten rule, once you go to those leagues you are out of the national team. So lots of young prospects careers are wasted.

There has to be a middle ground between this and what we are seeing on top european football, England's top flight most of all. I've seen gorgeous old yet functional stadiums like Highbury, White Hart Lane, Upton Park being demolished in favour of sterile Ronald Mc Donald coliseums. Why? Owners complain there is no money yet choose to build new grounds or spend 90 millon pounds in glorified training cones like Maguire. The bubble has to burst, maybe all that is happening is necessary in a way.

Also LOL! at Paris SAINT GERMAIN changing their name in the Champions League to Paris because it might piss off arabs...

If some self-promotion is forgiveable, I wrote an article on my blog (no ads or monetisation, just somewhere I dump thoughts occasionally) on the reasons the contrarian part of me wonders whether this thing should be allowed to go ahead on the basis that there's a high chance the greed and short-sightedness in the Super League's creation will plausibly not only lead to its self-destruction, but a significant weakening of the clubs involved and their owners, to the benefit of football as a whole.

To be clear, though, it's an absolutely reprehensible idea and as a Chelsea fan, I'm currently mulling popping down to Stamford Bridge to join the protest (reportedly planned for either 5.30pm or 6pm, but if I go, it'll be at six).

Right, because football isn't already lousy with ads... jersey sponsor, sleeve sponsors, sock sponsors, electronic hoardings, faux 3d touch line tarps, stadium naming rights, league naming rights, award naming rights, totally-not-team naming rights, etc...
We already have this. It's called the Champions League.
Too many Brugge v Zenit, Lokomotiv v Salzburg, Rennes v Krosnodor, Sevilla v Dortmund, and City v Gladbach to say that with a straight face. Jesus Christ, and that's at the group and knockout stages...

Out of the 62 two-legged matchups in the group stages and knockout rounds this year so far, only 5 were between ESL clubs. That goes up to a whopping 11 if you include the 3 potential founding clubs (Bayern, PSG, BVB.)

Rashford is the best

You guys realize ESL is going to make so much fucking money is because fans are going to be watching the hell out of it, right? If the fans don't come/watch, the sponsorship/broadcast money dries up and the ESL dies out of its own hubris.

That's the thing. Honestly, I would rather not waste $300/year with useless content I don't want. Would rather have MUTV channel or streaming service to watch the only club I give a fuck about. More power should be given to the clubs, they know they've been leeches and feeding on others' success. So hope we get to a middle ground with this mess.

Couldn't give a shit who is playing, I'd happily watch all those games. They've earned the right to be there. None of this gate-keeping "we're the elite" bullshit.

What's the point of constant glamour ties. How dull.

It's sports. And sports always follows money no matter what owners and athletes says.

I never knew this until I watched some videos, but I didn't know English soccer has a grassroots thing where money gets passed down to other divisions. You dont get that in North American leagues. Maybe a pro team helps out their minor league affiliate, but I dont think there is any kind of widespread process.

But as some videos say, the owners are going after global money as their revenue from focusing on league play isnt enough. And champions isn't either.

This Super League would be an annual league of the biggest market teams they can sign up, not the best teams to sign up. And thats where the money is I guess.

I forget who said it on video, but if some guy in China wants to watch Man U, they want to see them play another big team. Not Man U vs. Fulham.

If it's like hockey, the schtick will wear out. Global tournaments, the outdoor game in winter are all great when done here and there. But when done too often, the excitement wears off and people focus back on traditional league play.

Great video on the subject:

Like Gary says, these 6 clubs are so arrogant they feel an entitlement to European football........haha, Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea, Tottenham have no damn right to demand this considering their recent results in this area over the last few years

If you think only games between traditional large teams are worth watching then you are missing out, they play just as many, if not more, boring games in clashes if you ask me. Well, unless all you care is watching Messi walking around.

So supporters of those clubs should just go and fuck themselves?

All because some wee fanny in the US wants to sit posting "reactions" to Messi goals while surrounded by cheap Barcelona branded tat.

So far anyone I've seen in favour of this either doesn't give a fuck about football or just doesn't understand it.

Pandering to a bunch of dickheads who's only interest in the game is repping clubs in cities they don't even know the first thing about on social media.

Chelsea and Man City break into the English top four establish themselves and then just turn round and close the door on everyone else.

20 years ago Man City, Chelsea and Spurs would be nowhere near something like this. Now they want to make sure nobody else can EVER break in.

The saddest thing for me is that all of the match ups mentioned taking place in Europe would have been attended by passionate fans creating an unbeliveabe atmosphere. Stadiums packed out by supporters who genuinely love their communities and their clubs.

Galatasaray, Feyenoord, Sporting, Villareal etc amazing atmosphere and real passionate football environments. Thats just those disgusting "legacy fans" though.

Online subscribers just want to sit at home hoping to get a glimpse of Ronaldos abs and aren't really interested in football.

Indeed, the empty stadiums we have now makes games so much less fun to watch.

It's always hillarious to me reading reddit sometimes how americans cannot wait to get their yearly dose of ads in between break of superbowl. Idiocracy. And you're absolutely right. Perez suggesting that games are too long because according to his sources from ass less and less people are watching football is just absurd. Maybe it's one giant stretch from my part but I really think he's trying to chase american millenians crowd who sits home all the time watching every new avengers and fast&furious movies with constant in your face non-stop action. I've read somewhere comment "At this point I think americans have ADHD." and I couldn't agree more lmao.

The thing is, fans from abroad should have no say at all. Local fans should be catered first and foremost. And fans from other peripheric football countries should slowly build their own leagues. Like it was done in Europe and South America more than 100 years ago.

English working class fans were outpriced from the stands to the pubs when the Premier League was founded and all seater stadiums became the norm. Same across many other countries in Europe. And now those fans can't access a top tier competition in European football because a chinese/middle east/north american fan wants to see videogame style matchups week in and week out?

What about say... Leeds United. Top, top club in England. They were stranded in the first division for more than a decade and even were relegated agen then. They got their game together when the new owner hired Bielsa. They may become once again a side that plays european football on a regular basis and for the most part with the same players a mid table First Division side. They are pulling some Football Manager stuff in real life, just to be denied the chance due to the whim of some owners that want to cater to a global audience?

That's not what football is all about.

The reason why North American sports have tv breaks and ads is because there are full stoppages by referees. Soccer play is ongoing with a clock that is always ticking. I've seen some soccer matches in TV where they play the ad at the same time as the play by doing split screen. I've never seen that here.

In return what we dont get in US/Can sports that arent soccer are jerseys with giant corporate sponsors. Even the MLS does the same with ad filled jerseys. The Toronto FC team might as well be called the Bank of Montreal FC team. You cant even buy a jersey without a huge BMO logo on it.

European sports seem to have a lot of that. An NHL jersey is clean, a European hockey team will have tons of ads everywhere on the jersey and helmet.

I'm a foreign fan, and I think that true fans from the city itself should have their privilege protected to have at least access to all tickets like 2-3 weeks before they are sold worldwide. Man United away fans, being so small, make so much noise and bring so much passion to the game vs home matches due to locals being outbid. As a local fan you should have an ID card that preserves your rights to have early access with reasonable prices to all kinds of competitions, including UEFA competitions.

Overall football isn't for the poor at the moment.
