EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

That comes across as more than simple surprise.
I'll go through the bolded parts:
Having to look up the move is pretty bad.
In the context of our conversation, the thought is "If you have to look up a move you want to do, that's pretty bad". I still feel this way. If you want to do fatalities, at Evo you should know the inputs already. If you don't want to do the fatalities, then there's never a situation where you have to look them up, because you don't care about doing them. "Having to" only comes about when one is unprepared for what one wants to do, and that is the specific situation I was expressing disbelief toward.

I find it hard not to learn these things while playing normally.
I'm not sure how you read anything but surprise here. The statement is clearly one of disbelief, and is followed by "It puzzles my mind". If people here read more carefully before attacking, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Second, when a good player learns a character, that player learns everything about the character, even the stuff that is considered useless.
I still feel this is true, but I allowed the comment I was responding to to get me off track from the conversation. I do think good players know their characters in and out, but I also think that when I said "good", a better word might have been "quality". My initial statement was one of surprise, and then people were apparently offended by me saying that you shouldn't be looking up moves at Evo, so the tone became more defensive.

I think it just shows they don't give a shit about MK9. Fatalities are part of the culture of MK. If you're playing with your best character and you don't even know how to do a fatality, you probably only jumped in because you heard it'd be at Evo. They probably are the best players, and that's probably because they kick ass at fighting games in general.

However, it's sad to see them just jump into it for the reward or whatever extra prestige they can get with seemingly little care for what the game is. It's not really a judgment on them, it's just a sad reality because if they were really into it, those are the people who could have helped the dev team make it into a better game. MK has always been more gloomy than flashy, so maybe it could have learned a few more things about how to make stuff exciting, but it's not really a bad game just for lacking pizazz.

P.S. I'm pissed at WB for not bringing it to PC... even after releasing the MK collection... just giving a taste to rub salt in the wound. All these assholes not bringing their fighters to PC... grrrrr...

This was my thought process when I said "good" instead of "dedicated" in one of my posts. I should have used a more clear word to distinguish a JWong from someone who actually cares about Mortal Kombat.

I think UMVC3 would look amazing on PC since Capcom ports are generally really well done. Instead they gave us SFxT...sigh.

Madcatz has been sponsoring other teams before that too. I think they were already sponsoring DMG before team MRN.

Team MRN is still the stupidest thing.

As I speculated earlier, in the Capcom panel Ryota Niitsuma said some stuff about Marvel being involved in their decisions and them not being able to do some things he wanted because of that. Seeing as how MvC Origins (a DD game that should be a simple port) is also not coming out for PC, I wonder if Marvel just hates PC for some reason.

I'm really perplexed at the KoF discussion.

Those grand finals were incredible...easily my favorite part of EVO, and I don't even play KoF.

I expect more people to pick up the game (including me) based on what I saw; the stream numbers were ridiculous.

They aren't gonna move it to another day lol

It was hype as fuck, but I doubt tons of people are rushing out to play it.

Sorry there was no king to satisfy your lame play itch.

It's not that they don't care about MK9. Even in UMK3, players would typically just punch the opponent or something when "FINISH HIM/HER" popped up. Fatalities aren't bothered with for a variety of reasons, but mostly because they (a. waste time and (b. are completely unnecessary when it comes to winning matches. When someone does a fatality or any other kind of -ality, it's more often than not a spur-of-the-moment thing to add an exclamation point to a win.

Easily my favorite shot of Marvel top 8.
Just when Combo might've though he had a chance since he took out Doom, those missiles are still coming.

That's what I mean. It's just a fun thing to do when you're having fun with the game with your friends. The fact they didn't even know them most likely means it was never a "play for fun" game with them.

If I recall correctly, DJWheat was Team MRN's manager.

So yes, it is a joke team.

I'm almost certain that the djWHEAT part was a joke.

Team Marn started out as Marn coming across some money (I always assumed from gambling on sports) and flying Krone out to events.

Then they got some support from Madcatz.

And now they have other players and a LoL division, so I'm not sure how much of it is still a joke.

I don't care if they don't know the inputs. I thought it was clear that the tone of my posts has been more one of surprise at them having to look the inputs up than them being inferior players for having to do so. At the very least, they shouldn't waste everyone's time by looking that crap up. The shock comes at them apparently wanting to do fatalities yet not knowing the inputs ahead of time. You should come to the game prepared for whatever you want to do. It's not training mode.

This entire discussion is what's wrong with the fighting game community. That and some of the stream monsters.

i can't help but feel this is a very big exaggeration.

It's really not. All these crazy ideas that people have about what a player should be doing, etc is ridiculous. Top players for YEARS have jumped onto different games and learned various pieces of the games to win, they don't need to memorize completely useless shit to win, and the suggestion that they do, or whatever is going on in this thread lately is flat out fucking ridiculous. And this distinction and idea that's being perpetuated is being done by a group of people who will most likely suck the community dry, and then move onto the next thing.

I've been a part of organizing tournaments for 14 years and I really dislike where the community is going. But that's a discussion for another time and one that I doubt 90% of the people on this thread would be receptive to.

I would consider the often theft in events, the bashing of other games, the perception (for lack of a better word) of gender inequality and division, and players not going to their local scenes as all bigger issues than that to be honest.

My biggest issue is the amount of hate their is, and how much influence stream monsters can have. The first issue can be fixed, the second... yeah that is here to stay as long as the internet is involved.

It's an exaggeration because it's the opinion of a single person. I think sometimes you take forum arguments too seriously, we all know videogame forums are full of bitching about the smallest and insignificant things, just open a random topic here on GAF and you can see it. That doesn't mean the future is doomed, it's just how forums work.

Me myself I don't have any problem with the fatalities and I don't understand all the fuss about them. They are short and you can't be serious if you think that they are taking time from the tournament. The move list thing was just a funny event, I'm glad it happened, gave the match even more hype.
