EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

when there's so little overlap in attendees for the two games, they aren't gonna axe either their second or third most popular event.

I know they won't for business reasons... but they should for the sake of variety imo. The playerbases may not have much overlap, but the gameplay does, so it's almost like running the same game twice. It's not even a Third Strike kinda deal... it's like having SFIV and SFV at the same time.

Some people think that only things derivative of Street Fighter or Virtua Fighter are fighting games, and anything that tries to utilize a different formula isn't deserving as being recognized as a "real" fighting game.

It's a shitty attitude that far to many people have.

It comes down to FOMO. They aren't skilled at "pretend fighting games" like Smash, so they bash it. I'm sure there are people in the FGC that either are or aren't skilled at it that don't really care either way, but there's always that contingent that has to put down anything they aren't fans of.

Anything but Nidhogg.

I hope ARMS is good, but maybe it'll be unwatchable idk. I haven't seen enough of it.

Right now I want Windjammers to win.

I forgot how shitty the FGC can be, thanks for reminding me

Gaming side...

man, gaming side is such a weird place after you've been away from it for a while

dont group me with those casuals

Putting $100 down for KI.

I went to Evo and played last year. It was super fun, and I was planning on going again this year, but if there's no KI I don't think I will, as that's my main game.

Edit: I also echo the sentiment that I don't think Smash should get two spots at the expense of Marvel and/or KI. I get that the two featured Smash games are different, but a lot of the non-Smash community just doesn't give a crap about them. Dedicating 2/5 of the arena stage to a game that the community that built Evo generally doesn't even like seems kind of dumb. But congratulations to Smash players, I guess. My salt is only temporary.

Common KI :(

Me and buddy wanted to go watch Evo this year and we wanted to enter into KI.

KI was the main thing I was looking forward to watching at EVO this time around, so I probably won't even bother.

Other tournaments that are slightly smaller in scale are now much more fun to watch due to the better representation across the board with more games. Events like Combo Breaker are fantastic.

EVO has gotten so big that it is now becoming this sort of watered-down "e-sports" event in comparison. I understand how and why this happened, but the end result is me caring less and less about EVO with each passing year. Maybe I'd feel differently if I actually liked and followed SFV in the same way that I did every SF game before it.

Now I'm more interested in series that undeservedly have smaller competitive player bases:

- Killer Instinct
- Skullgirls
- Mortal Kombat XL
- Guilty Gear Revelator (at least this made it into EVO)

If you're gonna go as far away from traditional fighting as that and Windjammers, why not broaden a bit and embrace other kinds of fast, competitive games that don't have a stage (a Western one at least) elsewhere? When they only reserve a very tiny amount of slots for that sort of thing, I get extra frustrated at seeing fuckin' Nidhogg, lol.

Puyo. Catherine. How about Gundam Vs.?

Idk I like playing smash, but watching it.......lol. It's not bad, it just takes forever and without someone like scar in commentary no thanks

Kinda feel this way too. Evo is a huge event and it's nice to watch, but feels like an event trying to be everything for every fighting game's community just can't be done.

I think CEO really has the right idea. They have their own Smash and Anime focused events. Though I'd rather them then leave those out of the normal CEO event so every game has room to thrive and breathe. I was at the regular CEO last year (only playing Melee), and it felt like they were doing everything they could, but the event was just outgrowing itself.

I know Evo tries to set itself up as "THE" event, but in a small way it ends up feeling like SF, Marvel, and several side tournaments. Granted, there's no denying that the exposure it gives is plenty helpful to a hungry scene like 2013 Melee.

7 people donated towards MK. I get that it's a game more geared towards casual players. But 7 people? Come on.

Or just go with the top 4 for each concept.

Smash top 8 simply takes longer. 2 Smash top 8's is a massive block of time for a tournament that should have a diverse lineup of fighters.

I'm sure the Smash community would've melted down over that anyway, but seriously, that shit takes forever and having *two* games with that pace (and maybe Pokken as well) is a lot to ask of an event that otherwise focuses on much faster games.

Do actual prominent FGC players hate Smash? I think it's mostly the stream monsters who get all up in arms about it.

All I remember from last year was stuff like Justin Wong saying if he could add one more game to get good at, he'd pick Smash 4.
I don't think most people hate Smash, Heck they are some of the funniest games to play but they take so much time and always go over, I like your top 4 idea.

No matter how much I like Smash as a game, I think it's not fun to watch at all but I understand why it should be represented at EVO, I just don't think both smash games should be.

I like Leffen's point about it. Melee doesn't really need EVO anymore as it's grown to the point that dedicated Smash events like Genesis and Shine are sustainable and can cater to each Smash community's needs better (although Genesis 4 Smash 4 was unfortunately a complete mess). One Smash game on Sunday alternating every year or two and the other on Saturday is fair considering they're the second and third most popular games on the whole lineup respectively.

while true, theres something special about an all fighting game tournament of that scale. It would be a shame to not have the game there.

Smash earned their spot tbh
But I don't think they earned two spots, and I really think Skullgirls earned theirs too
I have no fucking clue why BlazBlue didn't have to fight for shit
I'm still confused as to how BlazBlue ended up at EVO again, even with Guilty Gear in the lineup.

Did the game have a resurgence at tournaments or something?

Can't believe people still think like this and are so self-unaware. Bottom line is if a game can't hook people for whatever reason that's its own fault. Especially after it gets as much exposure as MKXL does and still fails to remain relevant for the long haul. Smaller fighting games get coddled in the FGC because everyone knows they can't survive criticism like other games. Doesn't mean they don't deserve the niche status they get.
