EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

I find it really dull every time I watch it. But it's very fun to play, and as a Smash player I can sympathize more with the Pokken community. Not that I've voted or even decided what to root for one way or the other.

I get that feeling too. I've only played pokken twice but it was fun to play. But it's strange when at EVO where there's thousands of people there were so few viewers.

I don't think it would have done well even here in the US on PS4. There's way too many better fighters on PS4.

Ignoring that I feel Killer Instinct is easily on par with pretty much anything else released in the genre this gen... when it hit at launch in 2013 the PS4 didn't have any fighter at all besides a port of Injustice. It'd have gained a ton of players.

Pokken is a really fun and unique fighting game, but its definitely not the best spectator sport.

Hey now, you can't just drop this kinda hate without detailed reasoning! :P

I'd much rather see Pokkén as a Sunday game than Marvel for the thousandth time. It stands out compared to everything else at EVO and deserves better than the way a lot of the FGC treat it.

Seriously. I don't know if Nintendo fans are just funding this because it's a Nintendo game or if they legitimately enjoy watching but I can't imagine people actually thought what happened at Evo was good to watch at all.

I was at Evo and i remember there were times when like 10 or fewer people were sitting around the screen watching pokken matches.

I get the feeling that a lot of the Pokken money is coming from people who just like Nintendo and aren't actually interested in the FGC. Which is kinda disappointing cause the Marvel guys are obviously very passionate about their game and want it at Evo one last time.

It's also worth noting that Marvel 3 top 8 has been hype as fuck at Evo every single year. I've talked to plenty of people who normally hate on Marvel but still love the excitement of that yearly top 8.

What is this revisionist elitism? Fans of Pokkén are donating for the game. Fighting games aren't a country club where you have to behave a certain way to be legit. I say as an Active member of the London FGC that it's attitudes like this that are the biggest prohibitors to growing the community at every level.

I am so against it. I don't play Marvel, barely understand how it works, but it's fun to watch. Same can be said for most anime fighters. Last Evo, Pokken gave me nothing to be interested in. All I can remember is strafes, jumping in, and super beams. That's about it. Any of the other games on the donation list will be more fun to watch than Pokken.

That said, you crazy people do you and vote the fucker in. I'll just wistfully stare at the other games.

Great stream today from FGTV make sure to tune in tomorrow lot of Marvel heads coming through. I'll update with link when it goes live.

Nice amount of money raised as well from the community.

That's a weird way to interpret what I said. From what I've seen I think one game's scene is more passionate about their scene than the other game's scene.

you want to know why I think people dont like watching it? Because its esoteric as fuck. Not only does it use peoples nostalgia (ie favorite pokemon), but the mechanics are really different to the point where people just have no idea whats happening. Probably similar to why people just dont understand why melee is such a great game from watching people play.
I felt the same way watching marvel and having like 20 things exploding on screen, so its not like I cant relate.

I love Pokkén but it was kinda concerning that many tourneys dropped it early on and that there were quite a few dropouts at EVO last year. I wish the people so passionate about Pokkén winning could have showed up to more tourneys since I would have loved to play it more.

You have any idea how many women went to Max's assist me panel? Also Max is a huge part of getting casual people into fighting games in general so big ups to him. But he's a traitor for supporting KI and neglecting the one game that blew up his fandom. Traitor!

certainly not half of the player base

Marvel should have taken BB spot. There's already GG, why does BB even need to exist?
For the same reason that Evo runs both SSBM and SSB4. They're distinct communities that don't have nearly as much crossover as people would think and they're all games that would outdraw whatever's in the Player's Choice poll.

The real question is, was Pokken dropped from tournies because people didn't show up or because it's a pain in the ass to run?

If the Pokken community were a lot older I'm sure they would've helped out with providing stuff for setups (like Melee community with their CRTs), but given that the scene for Pokken is so young I can't imagine there was any organized effort to lend a hand with getting the game ready to go at tournies.

Pokken is boring af to watch.

Agreed. I watched a lot of it last year when I was at EVO 2016. It was so goddamn boring, even the crowd next to me couldn't believe how long it was taking, at least for finals. It's just not fun to watch or play IMO.

Go Marvel 3 ;) please win haha!

Seems like there's people willing to help Jebailey out with that in that CEO tweet.

Another thing is logistics. They would need Wii Us which is just another hassle for them. Having UMVC3 on PS4 really helps out their logistics this year.

I didn't actually want to know why you think people think it's boring tbh. I was just poking fun at the fact that you just dropped that opinion in your post unqualified in much the way you were previously complaining about others doing. You didn't seem to have the same lofty requirements for people stating that Pokken is boring as you did for Smash.

A post like that is fine... it's just that by your previous standards, it shouldn't have been.

the point is I can and will quantify what makes something less appealing without just being a hater (I actually like pokken).

And so can likely a decent amount of the people posting the same about Smash, or indeed any other game. They just would feel zero obligation to without someone going around them calling them out for having dared to post that opinion in the first place.

The ability to quantify it instead the same as an obligation to do so. If you didn't wish to elaborate why you thought Pokken wasn't a good spectator sport, that should be fine. The poster you originally jumped on (and potentially some of the others earlier in thread) also claimed to actually like playing Smash themselves, but that's not really the same as liking watching it, as I mentioned before with myself and Tekken. It may very well not be down to them not understanding it (or being a "hater").

My post was intended to be a lighthearted prod though. I didn't reply to your previous post to me, as I figured we'd just end up going back and forth endlessly. The post you made was just an easy target. :P

Its more that I should have explained what I meant. I still hold that posting a few words like "this game sucks" doesn't do anyone any favors, and usually pretty clear that they have no intent or capacity to explain why.

I don't think it's ever actually clear that someone has no capacity to explain something, simply because they didn't.

I've posted my opinion that countless games suck over the years on this forum (especially in passing when actually discussing something else). I can probably explain why (subjectively of course) for pretty much all of them. You wouldn't be able to tell that from me simply saying I thought it was boring though... that's just an assumption on your part.

You'd also have to factor in the reports of Wii Us being sold back to Nintendo by various major retailers & the fact that the Wii U is no longer being produced. While Smash 4 will face similar issues until the rumored Switch port comes out, it'll be less of an issue since you only need one set-up for each match as opposed to two like it is for Pokkén.
