Explain this next-generation loyalty thing to me.

Okay, so we have PS3 an Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 - Microsoft stuff like Perfect Dark 0, Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 2, DOA4 etc.

PS3 - Games like Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo 5, etc. shown.

It seems to me that Microsoft has its assets from this generation, and Sony has its assets from this generation.

In terms of graphics, I see some cool looking videos from Sony's conference. Anyone have the slightest idea what makes the in-game stuff undoable on Microsoft's console? I doubt it, and I doubt it is.

So it seems to me that people were expecting

A) Major exclusive defections from the 5 or 6 Japanese companies that make the big third party Playstation games.

and/or

B) Microsoft to actually blow Sony away in the way of graphics, despite the fact that its console is at a disadvantage.

Now, here's what I'm wondering. Does anyone care about games anymore? Is it all about marquee franchises and graphics now? And if it's about franchises, has MS delivered nothing you'd want to play again? If it's about graphics, how confident are you that MS can't deliver visuals on par with the in-game stuff from those demos?

And what of Killzone 2? It looks amazing, but it is indeed the sequel to a third-rate first person shooter from a company which has yet to deliver a genre-leading title. It's Forza to Microsoft's Gran Turismo if you will, as far as first person shooters go.

I guess the bottom line is, do you think Microsoft is necessary anymore? I certainly do, and I'm anxious to see how the company sets itself apart from Sony this generation. I don't see Gran Turismo as inherently more important than Project Gotham Racing, or Devil May Cry 4 as inherently more important than an Xbox action title like the next Ninja Gaiden. They're all different games that offer different things. And it seems to me that Microsoft isn't worth much to many of you without a limited array of third party titles that have been sequeled multiple times, or a clear edge in graphics.

I'm still looking forward to games from both machines before making up my mind. I wouldn't expect Capcom, Konami, or Namco's big stuff until a bit of time after the PS3 launch anyway.

So, I guess the summary of this jumbled mess is that if you don't think MS' vision is worth it after one conference, you probably weren't too enthusiastic about it to begin with. Maybe you just liked having the best graphics?

What's the point of laying down $400 on a new system if you aren't interested in graphics? That's the major push in getting people excited about a new console. MS dropped the ball. 90% of the games they've shown look like Xbox 1.5 graphics. That's why people are dogging the 360.

If you need a Speevy translation, here it is:

"Why is everyone hatin' on Xbox360? It wasn't that bad! They still got some good shit! Seriously, I mean, Killzone sucked anyway (it really did!). Anyway, I prefer Microsoft's ideology and think they are important, so I am anxious to see what they do. Fuck the hype train PS3 rode on."

Well, referring to genre-leading titles, Halo is pretty much the big one on consoles.

I've read the original post a couple of times, and I don't understand it at all.

I'm just asking where this need to abandon companies comes from.

Agreed. What proof does anyone have that the Xbox 360 is limited in graphics compared to the games shown for the PS3?

I guess it comes from them asking us for tons of cash and telling us things are NEXT GEN OMG when it doesn't really look it. I never joined the company, so I'm pretty sure it's ok to abandon whatever I want whenever I want. I'm a consumer and the 360 didn't sell. plain and simple.

And that ps3 controller makes me cry. so no sale there till i've touched it either.

Not at all. I just take a "wait and see" attitude with all of this stuff. I enjoy E3 for new game showings, but with these new consoles nothing is ever as it appears. Seems a ton of people have given up on MS.

See, I got lost somewhere between Microsoft being "necessary," and the "vision" thing at the end.

What does it mean to "abandon" a company, anyway? I'm so confused.

not a lot - but people get sucked in by hype so easily...

i'm not sold on the 360 OR the ps3 - more likely i'd pick up a ps3 but neither are guaranteed buys for me at the moment.. nintendo still has a chance :P but we'll see... maybe i'm becoming bored of games in general? :O

One problem is that MS was showing mostly launch software because they are launching this year. Killzone 2 will only launch with PS3 one year after that (for the NA launch, since I doubt that they would launch the game in Japan). Killzone 2's competition isn't PD0 or Ghost Recon 3, it's probably not even Gears of War. Killzone will probably be up against Halo 3, which MS didn't even show.

That said, MS just didn't hit a homerun with this conference like they really needed to to have in order to compete with Sony. The buzz going into the next gen is definitely going to be in Sony's favor, quite rightfully (assuming the showcased games are realtime, not CG). MS didn't even show much of PD0, which is terrifying considering that they needed it to be their Halo for this gen. Once again, I think only Bungie is truly capable of saving MS, AGAIN.

:lol

Beats me, but the "I'm comin' back to you Ken! Sorry I ever doubted." nonsense in various threads might shed some light on it.

Ok, but see... last time we saw PS2 tech demos, they were right on. Right now the PS3 shit we saw (the best of it, anyway) was better than the best of the Xbox360 stuff (only Gears of War, 99-Nights and PGR3 really holds up).

I think we're just a bit stunned by the discrepancy. Rest assured, I'm getting Xbox360 no matter what. I NEED to play 99-Nights and Lost Odyssey.

Speevy, don't you think it is a problem when the backbone of the XBox 360 launch (Perfect Dark 0) is barely shown at all!

My interest in 99 nights will probably fade once Dynasty Warriors 6 for PS3 is shown.

Ill buy whatever console has what I want. I got a PS2 because it had what I wanted and it was the natural progression from my PS1.

I got a Xbox just for Splinter Cell. I was late for the Halo train and Halo 2 was a dissapointment aside from the multiplayer.

Im going to wait till the PS3 drops before buying either. Why? I've never had a PS break on me. My orginal launch PS, PS2 and PSP are flawless and work till this day. How is that? Because I treat my equipment like electronics and not a frisbee. I've been satisfied with Sony thus far and it'd take a strong wind to blow me away and MS didn't do that.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing what N has instore, I wouldnt mind purchasing a Rev. if its got something going on.

I just posted this in another thread but i think it belongs here

Seriously guys both consoles look fucking awesome, there are a few shitty looking XB360 titles and the PS3 controller looks like crap. But I know I will enjoy both immensely and realistically there will be little difference in the graphics even the PS2 has games that look just as some of the better XB gamers. (plus does it realy matter it's all about the games).

Games like Elder Scrolls, Kameo, and PGR3 will have me picking up a XB360 at launch and MGS4, FF12, GTA? Will have me buying a PS3 down the track.

I think you overestimate the intelligence of many posters here. You see the obligatory "jump off the MS banwagon, PS3 Roxors!!" Or vice versa, but come November, the same ADD that caused the initial reaction will be the reason they end up buying a 360. And the PS3 haters will end up with a PS3 next year. It's all blind hype, but when it comes down to it, the hardcore will own all 3.

maybe that the only playable game shown - kameo - was a SINGLE SLOWDOWN

Look man, I liked the Xdude as much as anyone. But there's no need for competition in the ONE CONSOLE FUTURE. Join or look like Olimario.

Here is another problem I have with the 360. There seems to be a ton of crossover with PC games.

Condemned? Also coming out for the PC.

Call of Duty 2? Coming out for the PC

Elder Scrolls 4? Coming out for the PC

Gears of War? Coming out for the PC

But I don't think that's a sign that I should give up on the console. It seems to be a fine console, with a ton of potential, and a great deal of developer support. If you own a PS2, you know what you're getting with a PS3. And the same is true of Xbox 1, it seems. (plus some surprises)

More importantly, I feel it is needed to note that after tomorrow there will be a lot more Nintendo loyalists on this forum.

The Revolution has almost arrived.

What a bunch of bullshit. You've been a Nintendo fan for most of your life, but you've stated many times on this board that you probably won't ever be buying a Revolution and that's without knowing anything about it. You're saying this now because (at least for today) MS got its ass handed to it by Sony and you need to run damage control.

:lol :lol :lol oh god you are good.

right now my loyaty belongs to PS3 (FF7 demo got me) and most probably REV

Yes, but it isn't a good sign when your competition brings out the big guns in their conference while you hide your big launch game.

I've never owned a capable PC, honestly, so that's irrelevant.

True but itÂ’s cheaper itÂ’s to buy a 360 then have a good gaming rig. The reason I love the XB is it lets me play games such as KOTOR, Morrowind, Ghost recon etc,, that I canÂ’t play on my laptop. I am expecting the same thing out of my 360.

Don't you think I know that? I love Nintendo, but I can't pay $200 for an unsupported console. I doubt I'll own more than one next generation console, and I want to cut through the hype and make the right decision.

Just watch the videos from E3. Xbox 360 launches in november and all they are showing is some half assed ports. The games that do look next generation dont seem to run at a decent framerate. PS3 games look like they are ready to be released tommorow and blow everyone away. You cant really blame people for writing off the system. Comparing the games right now, sony wins by a mile. MS will get their act together IMO, they have a great peice of hardware. They dont care what games people are judging the system on at this point because it really doesnt matter. It will change in the weeks before launch and the months before ps3 hits. I cant be the only one that remembers this same thing happening with the original xbox.

It's like politics, which is like sports. Cheer for your team even though they overpromise and underdeliver and could care less about you.

The funny thing is he was GIVEN an Xbox for free, supposedly. So it almost feels like he thinks he has to do this super spin damage control out of respect for getting one for free ;)

I *just* watched Killzone 2. That was awesome. I'm not going to lie. I'm seriously impressed. I absolutely HATE military games, but I'm seriously impressed. However, I don't possess an understanding about why the polygon counts, textures, lighting, physics, geometry, and effects of this game will not be matched and even bested in the next Halo game. I don't understand it yet, and I doubt anyone else does.

I'm not your buddy. Stay out of this thread if you've nothing to contribute, champ.

I'm not spinning anything.

The only thing I've said about the PS3 is that you absolutely HAD to know these games were coming. Stuff like Devil May Cry 4 wasn't much of a presentation, but I got the picture. The only thing that surprised me was the fact that these demos were ready in such short a short time, and the fact that Killzone looks like it does. (since graphics stability was a major issue of the PS2 game)

I may get a PS3. It all depends on the games I want to buy. I will not buy a system with no games I want to play. I did buy a Gamecube.

I'm going to do what I've done every generation and buy every console I can afford. Don't forget, you don't have to BUY games for all of them. Between Gamefly and your local video stores, buying all three is the smart way to go. You get to play all the best games and don't feel the pressure to be an irritating dickwad fanboy (hello sonycowboy!) on messageboards.

Translation:

basically he is saying that he likes Halo much better than Killzone (even though he hates military shooters as it is) and that he doesn't see why the graphics of Killzone 2 should make people forget that Halo > Killzone.
