eXtas1s: Xbox is working on three new controller prototypes

  • Xbox Elite 3: Better Connection, Resistance, Feedback, this controller features adjustable triggers with haptic feedback for some games.
  • Controller 2: Features a LED/Status Bar in the controller, better bluetooth connection with PCs and Console. Direct connection with xCloud which mitigates latency considerably.
  • Controller 3: An Xbox Controller with full Haptic Feedback, but this controller also comes with an additional vibration which allerts players for controller issues such as bad connection, latency. This controller also has a dedicated button to alter between bluetooth and cloud options, but it only works at specific moments.

I wouldn't buy an Elite 3 after the horrible build quality of Elite 1 and 2. I am surprised controller 3 hasn't come out yet considering how far behind Microsoft is on controllers and the fact that they love to release new ones.

Nobody needs an LCD strip to eat up battery life especially if they stick with AAs.

Imagine if none of the controllers, especially the Elite one still do not come with hall effect joysticks.

get ready for elite 3 drifts

you would think they'd do something about it after years of complaints, but yeah never trust. especially since they'll probably sell it for over$250

The cloud connection is an interesting one and providing it works as intended, could make cloud gaming viable for multiplayer gaming. It's not for me personally but I'm interested to see how that works from a tech perspective and want to know more.

Didn't Stadia do this? How did it work?

I continue to use my Elite Series 2. Got a black one and a white one. Each has a zipper case with a charging dock inside. No drifting yet.

They sure do spend a ton of time on controller design to have the most antiquated controller design of anyone that makes a wireless controller.

Edit: and also it's too late now. You need haptics at the beginning of the gen, or devs will look at them as optional and skip. There is no saving the series from this fate of poor controller feedback until next gen. Sony did it right. Sebile should have launched with series consoles but once again with MS they are a day late and a dollar short.

I hope one of them has gyro, it's shit that gyro is only standard on Nintendo ports because of parity between PS and Xbox doesn't let many devs implement it on multiplatform games. Even PC players have already started using gyro.

Haptics in time for whatever they have next ;)

Also, yes the duelsense is a feature packed controller, but the Xbox controller is still the GOAT for many players. It was only the 8bit do Ultimate that topped it for me and its still arguably not as comfortable. Series x controller is perfection for my hands.

Have really enjoyed haptics this gen. Especially when it's really well implemented in games like Returnal and Astrobot for example.
Not much innovation can be achieved via controllers nowadays, but was cool for them to put some new ideas into it and not phone it in.

The ergonomic changes were welcome too. But they do need to get rid of the touchpad, it's a total waste.

Controllers are the only GW thing that sells reliably for Xbox, so it makes sense to make multiple new SKUs to flood the market and see if they can upsell people and get more $$.

If the Elite 3 comes with better reliability, quieter buttons and hall-effect sticks then I might pick it up.

Lol basically admitting that no one watches his podcasts.

So is there something the big companies know about Hall Effect thumbsticks that the rest of us don't?

I can understand that maybe from the perspective of planned obsolescence, but that's already covered through thumbstick deterioration anyways, which guarantees the short lifespan of a controller.

It doesn't make sense to intentionally harm your customers experience of your games through an issue that's essentially been resolved for a while now, and based on AliExpress, the price doesn't seem to be an issue either as the components are within cents of each other.

I wouldn't mind seeing what they have for controller 3. There is no way I would jump on Elite 3 after their shitshow of QA/QC on the first two.

Hey now, the Switch 2 Pro controller exists. It just got around to having back paddles.

nextbox should come with 3 controllers

1. sequel to the duke/og xbox controller. still the size of a coffee table. throw in screen in the middle for good measure. xboxU.
2. elite 3 pro X
3. sequel to the x360 controller. japanese market only gets this controller.

It's much more likely that these prototypes are for next generation and not the very end of this generation.

I can see a new standard controller and an Elite. No need for a 3rd, and a developer would have no incentive to support a third.

What is Xbox's obsession with controllers?

The same obsession that people have with controllers. They buy controllers like freaking crazy. I just looked at the Amazon top 100 video game best sellers, and there are 18 controllers in that list. 7 of them are PS controllers, 10 of them are Xbox controllers and 1 of them is the Switch Pro controller.

What pisses me off is that Xbox Design Lab has been down since January for "temporary on hold for a new payment platform", and I have an Elite design in my cart that I have wanted to order.

So they are copying Sony? The description of that Elite/Sebile sure sounds like Dualsense haptics/triggers unless I'm just reading it wrong.

Yep, I currently have a Series 2 Elite but only because it came with the Xbox that my buddy sold me. I would never pay money for them unless it was at a extreme discount.

I mean they do a pretty good job with the controller designs especially compared to their competition.

I wonder if they'll ever make em compatible with playstation consoles. Seems like easy money.
That isn't really Microsoft's choice lol. Sony seems to charge much more for licensing which is why you don't really see many officially license PlayStation controllers.

If it has triggers like the Dualsense I'm interested. Though the controller that came with my series X is two years old and has awful stick drift now, so maybe not that interested. Doubt MS has any intention of fixing that particular issue.

Kind of a tangent here, but you can fix that Xbox controller if you're handy with a solder iron.

Alternatively you can buy replacement Xbox controller parts from iFixit, but those won't be drift-proof.
