(eXtas1s) Potentially Lots of New Info on Next Xbox(es)

Forgetting the MS element, I would love to be able to throw high end components together and then throw either a PS OS or Xbox OS on top and have PC gaming unlocked in that form.

I have worked with PCs and tech for over 20 years now. I just want the power and the convenience
I doubt that a shell they throw on top of Windows will not bleed Windows all over the place…

I have a fix for that

If this is true I'll buy 3 Xbox.

It will change gaming forever having Steam on your TV without the hassle and expenses of a PC.

If they do this, it will break open the market.

You sure? It's interesting. And I can see it being for millions of people, but break open the market?

Something MS has been trying to accomplish for almost 25 years.

But this niche catered to their core item at an exuberant price-point. This just might be the one.
That's what I was thinking. This has so much potential.

Xbox needs to stay and offer competition to Sony. This might be the way.

Going digital on Xbox one onwards was one of the best gaming decisions I ever made. Being able to play my entire library and potentially my steam library on console or handheld is a tremendous proposition.

Kinda cribbing this from the purple place, as I don't really follow or watch eXtas1s's content, and don't have time to watch through a whole 3-hour podcast right now. Also, didn't see a thread for it here yet, so thought it would be worth making one. But it'd appear a LOT of new stuff is happening BTS with Microsoft and Xbox right now. A summary courtesy of purple place user P40L0:

I have a lot of thoughts about this, because like many of you I've been talking about the possibilities here since the Gestridens Discord leak back in January 2024. Which really, was more like a prophecy of what would come. Of course we've had some folks here talking about this stuff even prior to that leak, whether it were leaks, rumors or just speculation.

If this info turns out to be accurate, well at the very least that console-like shell/UI better be very lean on system resources; one idea I mentioned a while ago was dynamically disabling background processes and utilities deemed not useful for a gaming environment in Windows, so I guess that is something MS could be doing here. Of course, some processes (if you terminate them from Task Manager) might risk causing system shutdown or require some complicated steps to turn them back on. At least that's what I remember from times when, say, the explorer bar would die (though TBF I don't think I've had that happen since early Windows 7, maybe even last with XP (skipped Vista & 8)).

How's everyone else feeling about this?

Sounds too good to be true.

Lets remember this is Xbox. They've gifted massive cash through heavy subsidizing and bribed people to like them for years with a superb library of Day One pretty cheap amazing games...

And fucked it up. 🤭

An Xbox that actually supports Steam/EGS (not that I like EGS, hate that shit), maybe even GOG would be insane.

It could easily sell tons

I just don't see why it would sell tons. By the time this thing comes out MS games on PS will be the norm. So why would anyone care? Casuals aren't going to care and if you can't get them onboard you aren't selling tons.

This is where I feel like his source is full of shit, PC game pass is already "PC-only"

Yeah that part's sus; either something got lost in translation or they are adding stuff that sounds "new" on top just to make it juicier. As you said, PC Game Pass already is PC-only (and better than the console versions due to cheaper price and free online, although library isn't 100% the same).

It's really gonna come down to if they (MS) can offer the best of both worlds in a single (family of devices) package. Convenience and seamless pick-up-and-play of console, with "obvious" benefits of PC (open market alternatives for storefronts, productivity, upgradable hardware components, some aspects of customization for power users etc.), with pricing that has to meet somewhere in the middle considering they'll never be as mass-market as traditional consoles or as fully open as PCs.

IF they can hit that balance, they'll have something on their hands worth having. If not, it'll fail and they'll just shut the whole hardware side of things down. Real question is if they can catch up to where Valve already is, let alone accomplish what their end goal is with this venture, because again, Valve's pursuing something similar and they've got bigger advantages ATM (real hardware on the market proving "consolized PC" concept with Steam Deck, Steam storefront, Steam OS etc.), and now they're working directly with OEMs on devices.

This will sell incredibly well. Having a combo box that simplifies the experience while maintaining flexibility will be key. The interesting thing is what happens with the XBOX Live layer. Some games, I don't want to be in a PC cheating ecosystem (NBA2K, COD, Overwatch), other games I don't care as much so I could pick up on steam.

Honestly even if they nail it perfectly I don't see the average consumer caring. Hell I wont even care and I'm a hardcore gamer. They have to offer me something that I'm not getting on PS and I just don't see how a hybrid system would do that. In fact it would be worse cause now I'll be forced into MP lobbies with PC players and I hate that. R6 was infested with cheaters on PC.

All they had to do was come in with the most powerful console. That's what the die hards want. But instead they came out with the xbone and then put out Series s and a Pro console 4 years too early.

You think it'll sell better than the Xbox Series consoles?

I guess we found the person who is going to justify them attempting to lock down online gaming on this thing and forcing people to pay a subscription to access it.

Games for windows live part 2, incoming.

The BC portion will remain under live, anything new will be PC only. MS will probably need to get third parties to yes/no their games for BC.

Rockstar for example probably won't allow GTA6 to be emulated on a PC before the PC version arrives.

I'm intrigued but not selling myself on this, seems like there will be a lot of disappointment if the next-gen Xbox is just more powerful, which could be the case. So that's were my expectations are staying haha.

Unless it's actually a PC with Windows, I don't see how this would work. Why would publishers allow their game sales to be cut by so much if you can just buy the game on Steam and have it on both PC and console? I don't think Steam would make a 2nd store for Xbox that's some weird version that locks out the PC versions of games. Seem non-Valve like.

I don't know, I just don't see how it makes financial sense for publishers (you know, those greedy sell their mothers for an extra penny lot) to allow this. Then, if the Epic store was on it, with its weekly free games, publishers would lose out on even more money. Hell, Microsoft would be losing money from sales too as it is a whole lot cheaper buying a game on PC than console (ignoring GamePass)
Huh? If you sell a product on PS through Steam or Epic why wouldn't you want to also be able to sell that on Xbox PC? PC games are not really cheaper most of the times. Sure you can get grey market keys and maybe save a few bucks, but for most new big releases it is the same price as on console.

I've been using a PC as a console for about 15 years. It's great. Making that easier for the masses is also kinda great.

Well currently some devs are releasing games and not even updating them. Jez Corden has called them out for this. They need to get their shit together before they do this.

  • Future "Console-Like" Shell on Windows
Microsoft is developing a compatibility layer or "shell" to give Windows a console-like interface (similar to Steam's Big Picture mode), suitable for both PC gaming and next‑gen Xbox systems.

This needs to be the biggest priority over emulation. It can't be slow to navigate, and it needs to feel like the player can simply go download and start a game without all of the extra headaches that the windows portables present today.

So extasis robbing Jez Corden again?

Count me in with the Steam on Xbox btw, I like the concept and I hope there are different tiers of performance.

Another attempt to try and make Windows feel like a cozy console environment. They need to get the basics done first so that the system won't bother the user with long and tiring updates, with no guarantee that everything will work okay once it's done.

People who hate being bothered with all the technical stuff related to PC gaming will turn towards PS ecosystem. Or maybe Steam OS will have a chance to flourish.

It needs three skus on release so people have a good choice. Preferably one with a number at the end, one with a letter and one with a roman numeral to make them easy to tell apart when the boxes look similar.

Correct me if Im wrong but...wouldn't putting Steam on Xbox effectively Kill the Xbox storefront? Potentially wiping out millions of dollars in sales for MS?

Why would it kill the xbox storefront? All developers will just put their titles across both store fronts the same as they have always done.

I think steam app on the next xbox was always a given and I've been advocating for this for ages.

Depends how much people are going to be upset when Microsoft purchases steam once Gaben passes.

But by that same logic, most PS games would be on Xbox [if they're on steam, lets say a year after release]

If I'm Joe Average, and I've got PlayStation and their offerings on one hand -- but I also have the option of an Xbox with Gamepass/Steam/EGS integration for roughly the same price as a PS console, with the knowledge that Sony exclusive games come out a year later (on average) to Steam, and I'd then be able to play it on my all in one living room box -- in what world would I go for a Playstation? The addition of other stores to a living room console would absolutely be important to a large majority of gamers. Guys I know who've never owned a gaming PC know what Steam is, and know about Steam Sales and the like. If I tell them 'hey, you can do that on the next xbox' -- I'd wager most of them would go over to it.

Lol companies like Ubisoft and EA already won't get into the PlayAnywhere program and require their own launchers on the PC Xbox store. They are absolutely not gonna play ball with this.

This will be one hell of a licensing mess.

You've been using Steam on your TV for 10 years without a computer? How?
He's been using it with a computer lol. Hes saying he doesn't need anything Xbox to do it.
