But I thought you liked Penguin Drum?

:saber

Thanks for the laugh.

C3 Episode 10

Uhhh that was about as over the top as you get in
hardcore bondage
but yet it was done in a pretty cool Bakemonogatari type of fashion, not so trashy way that served a purpose within the story itself. This show is loaded with terrible innuendo and trashy fanservice but it's most over the top scene actually had a purpose to it. Rest of the episode sucked.

words and terms that will hopefully be banned in the future:

Instead of mono no aware, let's use: "gentle sadness at the transience of all things, which increases their beauty".

Idolmaster - 24

I liked the part where Haruka cracked so hard she started hallucinating. Then she kidnapped a little girl and took her home.

Kinda frustrating for me - I know this show is all about DANKETSU and friendship so what the fuck was I expecting - but it would've been interesting to see the idols all embark on their careers and deal with the fact that the days where they were just starting out are gone now. It's almost like they're wallowing in the same kind of nostalgia that high school quarterbacks indulge in whenever they take out their high school jerseys to press against their middle-aged beer bellies.

I guess the next episode will be a huge dance or whatever. Bleh. I'll just youtube it or something.

I vote to keep mono no aware.
Me three!

"Mono no aware" use isn't nearly as bad as it used to be.
Does that make you "nostalgic" for those days?

I'm sure the OAV will be dedicated to their careers as JAV idorus?

Or maybe he learned the folly of words.

I'm sorry, I've been slacking.

Anne of Green Gables sure is mono no aware, which is part of what makes the series stand out. I mean, look at all those cherry blossoms!

Mad Bull 34 OVA Ending it doesn't really get more mono no aware does it?

Fate/Zero 10 could be the perfect set up for some future mono no aware moments.

Penguin Drum 23 isn't really mono no aware at all, no wonder firehawk12 is so disappointed in it.

You sound so bitter that Idolm@ster is exactly what one would expect from an adaptation of the Idolm@ster source material, albeit slightly classier. I mean, despite the strong direction and excellent visuals throughout the series it's never really gone outside the safe, soft confines that it set itself up in.

I guess what I'm saying is: it's you fault for having hope in something.

Go full weaboo?
Eh, "mono no aware" is just a general trend that's wormed its way into the Japanese literary tradition. It's not exclusive to Japan. I mean, the movie Big Fish is more or less American folk mono no aware. The Tea Party movement is basically the manifestation of mono no aware in American political frustrations. The Japanese have no more monopoly on mono no aware than the Germans do on the word "Schadenfreude", which is represented in pretty much every comedy culture on earth. The only difference is that the Germans have one word for it, and we just say "being a douche".

Nostalgia is generally regressive, which is why it works so effectively, because we always assume things were better "then" than they are "now". Most mono no aware texts are about being forward looking. Besides, I've never said it was exclusively Japanese either - just that it's a common trope in the animus I watch.

There is nothing more transcient and ephemeral than beauty; it's no wonder that bishoujo anime love mono no aware.

I always saw the episodes as represented by the path in-between the stations, since the title moves from one to the next each time it's shown. Not that I'm discounting the possibility of a movie/epilogue, but I don't think the eyecatch is proof of anything like that.
On that note, simply being able to finally see the "end of the line" in the eyecatch (as it were) was pretty neat, as another way to show that the series is almost over.

The only thing I have to say though, is that after the next episode, we will never reach the actual end of the line. It'll stop a station before that. It'll stop at the 24th dot (moving from 23 to 24) and not go past it. The dot not logo.

You should definately watch Mushishi as it's one of the best anime series out there. If you liked Lain you should check out the other stuff that ABe worked on like NieA_7, Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze and Despera. Baccano's kinda weird at first but it pays off in the end if you stick with it. You might also want to check out Planetes, Now and Then, Here and There, Time of Eve and FLCL if you haven't seen any of those already.

All of these are good. Also Twelve Kingdoms although that one is lengthy.

Sure, but watch Haibane Renmei before any of the rest of that stuff. The only thing better than it is Lain, nothing else...

Lain gives me brain spasms. Haibane Renmei is superior.

actually the only reason I saw k-on was because it was hyped by the anime fans on IGN boards who called themselves the "LMC" (light music club)
and i had to watch it to be part of it or something eugh

I saw K-ON because. BECAUSE.

Why in gods name did you watch the terrible DEEN adaptations?

I have no problem with FSN. I really don't see what was so bad about it.

It wasnt that bad. Before I came here to GAF, FSN was actually one of my favorite animes. then I learned that it was just horrible and everything I enjoyed was a lie.

Why in gods name did you watch the terrible DEEN adaptations?

I'm sorry man, Fate Zero was coming out, and I marathoned FSN to see what the series was like, and I really liked Saber before I watched any of it and and and I was a young naive fool 3 months ago. T_T

As you mentioned Stand Alone Complex you should probably also watch Moribito, as it's from the same director.

I'm going to assume you've seen most Ghibli stuff but I do recommend checking out Miyazaki's first film, Castle of Cagliostro which is an extremely well made adventure movie.

On the opposite side of that, you might also want to have a look at the works of Isao Takahata, he's a fairly realistic and down to earth director, which doesn't necessarily gel with what you've mentioned above, but he does some great stuff. Gauche the Cellist will only take about an hour of your time.

Mononoke is a rather strange series which most people, including myself, would recommend.

There's lots more, of course, but there's plenty of other resources, including the threads, to look for regarding that.

Mononoke is a good suggestion, yeah. Some things about it are kind of disturbing, but that's its goal, and it's a pretty interesting series. Quite unique art design too.

I haven't seen Moribito myself, but yeah, GITS SAC was quite good... I guess I should look it up then?

Other than that... what about some Shinkai? I know that's a different kind of thing, but maybe worth trying, anyway?

I don't have a problem with the concept of "mono no aware" in entertainment (even though it personally does nothing for me and very rarely doesn't feel like a waste of time from my end.) I just hate that particular terminology.

Moribito is a great show, although it is slow paced at times.

Also I really dont understand the concept of Mono No Aware. Someonel ist examples of it. Ive probably seen it in anime, but I dont recognize it or exactly what it means.

You don't look for mono no aware, it just settles in your heart and makes you cry. Like onion juice in your eyes or a hobo settling in your garage.

It's kind of like "HNNNNNNNNNGH", but softer and subtle. It spreads over you and invades your emotions, coloring everything you see. Mono no aware is a little bittersweet and intoxicating for certain kinds of people, like semi-sweet dark chocolate.

Oh ok. Definitely stuff like Mushishi, Air, Kinos journey, Haibane renmei, Piano, Aria, Someday's Dreamers...most of the stuff I like to watch. So thats the term for it.

Let's talk about wrong cross-dressing. If you draw the trap with a female body and face and use a female seiyuu, then I'don't know if you can call it cross-dressing. It is just a "has a penis" in the character descriptions.

They don't use the word, but Aoi is definitely pre-op transsexual.

I need examples of it in anime.

Anything from Shinkai is mono no aware, for one. Other shows with lots of mono no aware include Aria (I'm pretty sure, haven't seen much of this one myself), Tamayura, Sora no Woto, etc, etc... there are plenty of examples.

As for what it is, it's an old Japanese concept about the transience of things, their beauty, and the sadness at seeing things pass. Usually it's also about accepting that transience and passing, as well, but some challenge to that is still acceptable as long as it's still about the core concept, so it's not always about sad endings, just often. "Appreciate the transience of all things because it heightens their beauty, and be sad about their passing" sums it up.

... Beautiful and yet completely impermanent, is that why Shinkai likes clouds so much?

This is a door best left closed. I suggest using :firehawk in the future.

One beach episode: Okay, to be expected. Two beach episodes in one cour: Come the fuck on you are not even trying now!
This is why some people think S1 > S2. Really depends on how derpy you like your moe anime I suppose.
