I... really don't get this. I think this may really be for people who've read the manga only - or find the Japanese sense of humour funnier than I do.

In this episode, they offer up a "sacrifice" to the Lychee robot thing for judgement, and then all the characters decide on what the sacrifice's punishment will be, ranging from casting a spell on him (except no-one knows how to cast spells) or by spoiling his favourite manga for him.

Forgive me for simply summarising the plot, but there's not much else to say. I guess it's probably funnier for someone with a far greater degree of fluency than mine. Looks-wise, it's absolutely stereotypical Flash animation and doesn't stand out in any way. It's less than 3 minutes long, so I suppose it's not a lot of time wasted, but I enjoyed Tiny Old Man's nearly wordless 30 seconds more than this.

This season I'll be checking out From the New World, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Psycho-Pass, and Robotics;Notes.


P.S. Obligatory SAO opinion: eh. "Smartest anime in years" is the anime version of "Oscar-worthy story."

I knew this was going to be a comedy short, but I must admit to being slightly puzzled as to why. It's a one volume manga - is it some kind of cult thing? Or is it actually relatively well known?

It's a guro manga that's kinda unadaptable for TV.

I don't know about how popular it is in Japan, though--I guess Furuya did a prequel, and there was a stage musical or something for it, so it seems to be pretty well known.

There are quite a few anime that have music as a central part, Cowboy Bebop or Kids on the Slope for example, but no pure musicals I can recall.

I know what you mean. Like Sound of Music. I was just saying music has been a central theme, but not the focus of a show.

I guess what I'm saying is, as much of a focus that music has been in some shows, it's interesting that no one's taken it all the way.

In a similar vein from the same director, there were several sung scenes in Red Garden. I can't find any good clips on Youtube other than a taped off-screen clip from the English dub; it wasn't much less cringeworthy in Japanese.

I want Koume's clothes after she's spent a day playing baseball in the heat. The smell of active, adolescent girl embedded in fabric drenched in her blooming body's sweat is something I'd kill for. After all, hygiene in the Taishou era must not have been&#65279; as good as it is today.

I read some of it. Its definitely pretty guro and not something I would expect to see in anime form. It wasnt THAT gross but maybe Im just really desensitized by the internet.

I thought the first episode was pretty good. Diminishing returns after that, mind you. It's clearly something Nabeshin had wanted to do for a while though - the DVD-only episode of Excel Saga started with a musical section, only for Nabeshin/Koushi Rikudou to reject it in favour of a porn spoof due to being too expensive.

So there's an interview out with Sayo Yamamoto and Dai Sato, focused on Fujiko of course. There's some interesting bits about their careers and their association with Shinichiro Watanabe in particular, but I wanted to highlight this particular bit that I know people here will get a kick out of:

Sato: I also want to touch on the casting for scriptwriter. Much like with Cowboy Bebop, I only wrote 3 of the episodes of the series myself. It was the ever-famous Okada Mari who was responsible for the overall series composition. Can you tell us about the experience and the casting of Ms. Okada?

Yamamoto: I had several different opportunities to possibly work with Okada in past years, but for some reason or another, the staff around me always stopped it from happening. They said we were “two birds of a feather”, or “north pole plus north pole is not going to work out well, working together”. TMS entertainment is most famous for children’s series such as Anpanman, Hamtaro, and Detective Conan (Case Closed). I bet they didn’t know too much about myself or Miss Okada when they realized they were going to choose us! So surprisingly, when I decided to give the offer to Miss Okada nobody stopped me this time. It just went through.

*Translator speaking directly to the audience* You may not realize that Miss Okada is considered the topmost rated scriptwriter in Japan right now, she’s done AnoHana but also AKB0048, which is a tie-in with a very popular idol group, so she’s immensely popular.

Sato: So even though she’s so extremely busy with so many projects, was it really so easy to send a request and she said “I’ll do it”?

Yamamoto: Well…yeah.

Sato: When you worked with her, did you feel your dreams or wishes had come true having to work with her?

Yamamoto: Yes, she’s a very interesting person. It’s not always the case that an interesting scriptwriter can write interesting scripts. But I was really pleased with how amazing the script ended up being, which far exceeded how interesting Ms. Okada is, the script was even more so. She has an amazing reputation for memorable punch lines and memorable quotes that characters say. We felt that we needed to be able to execute good punchy lines, which is critical to a Lupin piece. And I think that we’ve been able to add so many of those punch lines inside the show is really just thanks to Miss Okada.

Shin Sekai Yori 1

Great first episode. I'm immediately hooked, though having to wait a week between each episode will be hard. It definitely left me wanting to know more about the world (and why it's so purple!). The animation looks smooth and the character interactions are believable. This show is living up to my expectations and more! It also helps that the ED is amazing.

That reminds me, who would you guys consider the best scriptwriters currently working? I'm only aware of the shit ones (Yoshino, Okada-bot, and Aikawa) and Urobuchi. They have to do an exception job one way or another in order for me to remember them.
