Rakugo isn't stand-up, because they don't stand up! xp

I've heard it described more than once as "sit-down comedy."

I also watched a couple of English rakugo performances back when Joshiraku was airing, and realized that a large percentage of the first episode of Polar Bear Cafe was based on a classic rakugo story.

Way to kick him down and trample on him Koko....

It's like he was sentenced to the prison Planet of Tomodachi 5 and rode in the Friend Ship to carry out a life sentence in the Worst part of the deepest SSS class Sector - The Friend Zone

Of course we all saw the opening so nothing really matters

What if that's actually Koko's less crazy (evil?) twin Coco?

Manzai is the Japanese equivalent of stand up but its by two people. Its quite a bit more mainstream than stand up is in the US.

Yeah, I know there's manzai, but that's also relatively limiting in how jokes are told. US stand up can be pretty much anything provided it's just a comedian using words (and sometimes puppets). I was just wondering if something like that existed there, even if it only had incredibly small venues and rarely happened.

If you count variety show monologues then I don't see how that is possible.

Some of the most powerful and influential acts in Japanese entertainment are manzai acts. Pretty much all variety shows are hosted and guested in by manzai acts. In absolute terms, more people around the world know American standup (because of population) but in relative terms, manzai is pretty much half the entire business in Japan.

There's really nothing that can be done by 1 dude that can't be done with 2 dudes. There are prop comedians, impressionists and stuff doing manzai too. There are solo acts but its not as common as duos. Japanese comedy relies on a back and forth between the "boke" and the "tsukkomi" and alot of the comedy relies on the boke horsing around and the tsukkomi interjecting.

Motto! Ojamajo Doremi 50

Hana-chan's got guts.

There's another episode, right?

Or maybe not...saw the preview for the next season.

Alright AnimeGAF.

What else should I be watching on Crunchyroll besides Kill la Kill? It was basically unanimously everyone telling me to watch that.

I love comedy, over the top antics, I like old stuff like Slayers, GTO and Tylor. Maybe give me another comedy series and an action series or too.

I haven't seen anything else on CR, so that should help.

Samurai Flamenco has some comedy elements, but it's not really over-the-top. Not really keeping up with much else tbh.

Toriko Episode 124 Komatsu Is in a Pinch?! Triathlon Cooking!

Pretty silly an a bit slow paced but a good start to this cooking fest. Havent laughed this much in awhile and the current theme song is perfect in the instrumental form...but to use it three episodes in a row is a bit much...loses its significance and specialness if their going to keep using it like that.

Do you want something airing right now?

There's not really much in the way of comedy at the moment, but there have been some great comedy series from the past few years.

From this season, I'd rec Samurai Flamenco, though. It's more of a dramedy, though, I guess.

I'll take some recommendations on older series as well, as long as they're on CR.

Thanks!

Darn, all I watch are action comedy's but almost none of them are on CR :(

If you ever get the chance you should check out:
Magi (this actually is on CR) Great action, and lot's of comedy. Story is decent.
Hunter X Hunter 2011 (if you don't mind watching 100ep, it's also on CR) Feels like a regular shounen show, and is animated well for a long running show
Ben-To (not on CR, but is the best action comedy I've ever seen) Best recommendation I can give, just... wow at this show.
Samurai Champloo (this is on Hulu) I just watched this currently, it's really good. Action is amazing, and the comedy is pretty good as well.
Hajime No Ippo Rising (It's on CR) This is mostly action, but has a little comedy thrown in every once in a while. It's boxing so it's mostly cool punches being thrown.

These are some of my favorite's that I've seen. 2 that are on CR, and 2 that isn't.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Tokyo Ravens episode 1
You guys didnt tell me this show was as perverted as it is, but what a way to end the first episode with some slight NTR

Why can't all companies just use non-region-locked YouTube videos for anime PVs? Why do some of them still have to use stuff like Bandai Channel for that sort of thing?

edit: or at the very least, anything non-region-locked, even if it's a proprietary video player on their own website.

Go for Naisho

So how about dat mold breaking.

From the preview,
Hana-chan has grown to Doremi and everyone else and is going to be in their class and is going to be an Ojamajo.
I really, really don't know how I feel about that. For the moment, I'm skeptical.

The boke and tsukkomi routine strikes me as something limiting, which is what I thought all manzai was. How do solo acts work?

Keep in mind I'm not saying whether one is better or worse than the other, just that there's limits to a routine that requires a straight man and a funny man just like there are limits to a routine that only has one person.

Would also like to comment that tokyo ravens has a really sick OP, probably the best this season, also just found out its 24 episodes, which is a satisfying number

Is Nichibros on Crunchy? If it is, you should watch that. Best comedy in years.

Unfortunately, not. It was gonna be the main thing I was gonna recommend to him, but yeah, no. :/

I'll take some recommendations on older series as well, as long as they're on CR.

Thanks!

Nichijou (on CR as My Ordinary Life)
Gintama (it's really long, but also mostly episodic)
Binbougami ga! (not on CR, but on Funimation's site; it's really good, although maybe only if you get all the anime references)
Polar Bear Cafe
Humanity Has Declined (great black comedy/satire)

As far as action, Hunter x Hunter is fantastic, and really the last shounen action series you ever need to watch.

Crunchyroll really seems to be lacking in the comedy department. It has some good stuff, but there are several series I'd recommend that they don't have. Two of my favorite comedy series ever aren't even licensed (Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei and Joshiraku), and Daily Lives of High School Boys isn't streaming anywhere, despite being licensed and having a Blu-ray release.

Ben-To was great, but it's also not even licensed. It didn't even sell well in Japan, unfortunately.

Log Horizon, Ace of Diamond, Gingitsune and Kyousougiga.

Better to just watch what it's a ripoff of. Gintama is most definitely on Crunchyroll.

The funny thing is that the original director for Gintama actually directed Nichibros.

And the second director for Gintama directed Binbougami.

They're both kind of Gintama ripoffs (even though they're all by Sunrise), but I like that sort of humor.
