One thing he doesn't talk a whole lot about there is sound design, I assume that's one area where episode directors would be pretty involved in.

Most shows have a "sound director" credit and the such. The usage of the soundtrack in a given episode is probably decided between the storyboarder and the episode director, with oversight by the series director as always. The article mentions how Toei tacitly expected (expects?) their episode directors to manage the voice recordings themselves, which is unusual in other studios.

The amount of reused footage in Kyousougiga is getting ridiculous. Well the good news is that they're running out of stuff to use.

This scene. Just, this whole scene. I can't. The emotional dissonance created by this swell of triumphant music when Hozuki's pendant starts to do, umm, something like it's some great achievement or accomplishment or grand victory over adversity IMMEDIATELY AFTER
Roberto murders several people in cold blood in an unchecked fit of egotistical, self-aggrandizing bloodlust
is just too much. Is this somehow supposed to compensate for the fact that everyone just stood around while
people were casually being murdered left and right as punctuation marks in an insane lecture
? That is some incredibly breakneck and awkward mood whiplash.

Just consider some of the contrivances that were necessary to set the stage for the events of this episode. A vague illness in need of emergency medical attention is used for the second time in three episodes. All of the major players of the story just happen to be at the same hospital in Nowheresgrad, Siberia at the same time.
Roberto's rampage
only happens because the pirates are the world's worst marksmen with the world's slowest reaction times. A man who has just been shot in the arm is sent to try and fix the generator when there are several able-bodied people available. It's really astounding. At least the first person that Hozuki trips over in the hospital didn't hand her one of Galileo's horcruxes this time.

Current odds of being a prequel to Overman King Gainer: 30%

PORTENTOUS WORDS TOMOYA

Every time I watch this I'm afraid Nagisa's eyes will literally devour Tomoya.

Also a random girl was carving her starfish... That kind of sounds like innuendo.

In other news, Tomoya's dad is depressing.
Also that girl built a robot. So that happened. If this all turns out to be a dream or something of that girl I think might go all School Days on someone.

We've already reached the caring for her when she's sick part of the pre-relationship I guess.

Reusing from earlier in the show or those OVAs?

Oh, this is neat -- Tonari no Seki-kun is getting JAM Project founder and legendary mecha/tokusatsu theme song performer Ichiro Mizuki to perform an insert song for a show-within-the-show

I say this everytime Clannad is brought up but Fuuko's part could have been 5 episodes shorter and no one would have noticed and it would have improved the show.

According to Mr. Shimizu, one of Toei Animation's outstanding characteristics is that one director takes responsibility for the entire production process of the episode he/she is in charge of. In other words, the director himself/herself draws the storyboards, and directs the total production including sound effects and voice-over. Typically, storyboards are drawn by a specialist, and there is usually a special sound director for sound and voice-over. This style of Toei's comes from its mother company's tradition. Also the leader of the live-action Japanese film industry, Toei's directors are responsible for every segment of the movie making process. Mr. Shimizu kindly showed me a couple of scenarios and storyboards from The File of Young Kindaichi, a hit anime series now on TV. As TV series are broadcast weekly, each series has 6-8 directors, who take turns in a shift system. I hear even some of Toei's live-action directors switch to be animation directors.

Explains a little why toei has been able to nurture so many talented directors like isao takahata, hayao Miyazaki,Leji Matsumoto, konosuke uda and many others.

Samurai Flamenco - 01-04

This scene
could've led to some amazing events moving forward, but then she had to get all googly eyed over Goutou and his uniform. What a load of bullshit! ;_;

I am in love with the ED too. So upbeat and energetic!

There is no man or woman alive who can resist the Sugita.

School Rumble any good?
It's great, though it annoys me how after season 2 they just skip a good chunk of manga chapters and go "Here, have your ending even though we skipped much of the important drama, bye!"

Oh Lala, you never got enough screentime in either version

Samurai Flamenco 6

I wasn't sure at first, but as of this episode I'm completely convinced that going full goofball is the right thing for the show. I'm already having more fun with SamFlam than any other show this season and I'll be thrilled if it can consistently keep amping up the absurdity.
Stapler nunchuck
played totally straight was the moment that I finally thought "this is golden".

Ookiku Furikabutte - The Summer Tournament Chapter 13

Basically wraps everything up finale episode which I really enjoyed.

The whole focus was on the team and the goals they were trying to make for themselves which really helped with seeing how high their ambitions were.

We also got pretty much the turning point in Abe and Mihashi's relationship which is really the best part of the episode. It's pretty amazing to see their development from the start to now.

Had an absolute blast watching this show, since I really liked all the characters and even the long games were great to watch. Would love to see another season of this but I guess reading the manga is the best I'll get at this point.

Maybe it's cause I'm a little buzzed, but I think I liked this a little bit more than I should have. Or at least more than I usually would. I'm not usually a fan of this sort of random comedy, but I liked this. I liked when the dude was reading her giant scroll love letter into the night. And then it turned out she didn't sign it. And lol at that random cg car right in the middle of that bike chase.

I hope the motorcycle dude wins. That dude Tenma likes seems to be pretty much a sock puppet at this point. Least motorcycle dude has a personality.
