This is kinda hilarious. An all-flash no-substance viral video machine wins while the world is good, and then when the world is bad people come crawling back to someone of substance looking for answers. And it's worth noting that Fallon isn't even the best no substance viral video generator on late night -- Corden laps him on that front.

listen to the madman.

He fucked everyone over by treating Trump the way he did. He became persona non grata for life that day - and I'm someone who actually enjoyed a lot of the musical numbers he did, for example.

Tbh I didn't even see the Trump interview, all I saw were the hair-rubbing gifs. Did he suck up to him and pretty much treat him like a famous rapper who he's a fan of? Did he grill him? Sounds like it was a bad interview judging your post.

The "change" should be to let him go and get someone else. Fallon is garbage compared to Colbert and Conan.

Big fan of Conan of old, but he just seems boring now. Doesn't seem often that he does something exciting or interesting and his interviews feel that way too.

Fallon just laughs and mumbles and laughs. His only time of genuine excitement is during games and skits it seems.

I think Fallon could try harder to be a better host/interviewer.

He's not built for satire, let alone any insightful commentary.

Making more Trump jokes will help a bit, but he won't be nearly as good as that as Colbert (or even Meyers) so I don't think that will sway anyone, and I think the damage is done as he's accessory-to-normalizing-Trump in many ways.

Fallon's format is when adults think they want their own sesame street. Then they realize they are consuming absolute garbage all day (the bachelor, bake offs, once upon a time, big brother, top chef, flip or flop) and can't take it anymore.

Who wants to watch people lip sync? Plinko into a cup of Faygo? WHO IS THIS FOR? WHO IS ENTERTAINED BY THIS?

This. I'm not sure where the Fallon hate is coming from and this place is the first I've ever seen any negativity for him. Did he do something? Is he a bad person? Idk. If people dislike his show then they can dislike it but these hatred comments, I mean there's gotta be something else right?.

People hate him because during the primaries, or post primary, he had Trump on and was too playful with him.

I also find it funny how now the news organizations are clamoring over themselves at how good they are now because they have something to do and they can profit from it.

Pretty much. He went down on Trump, wagging his tail just like he does with every single one of his actor or comedian friends. Threw him some of the softest balls ever and ruffled his hair.

It was thoroughly pathetic.

I like Fallon. There are very few places that aren't politically focused anymore. It's nice to have a place to get away from it for air.

It works for Colbert because it's what Colbert knows. It's his realm, he's been doing it on his own show for a decade. Jimmy trying politics to beat him just wouldn't make any sense and I imagine the lack of politics is why people watch Fallon anyways... just as it's the reason I don't watch.

But yeah someone mentioned Conan does the Trump stuff really well. He doesn't go over in-depth about the events like Colbert or Seth but he blasts him in a more comedic manner... which still isn't suitable for Fallon because the material requires an offensive edge and Fallon can't do that.

I'm honestly kinda surprised that Colbert is winning people over in such a mainstream platform. He openly shits on Trump every single day and his guests frequently do the same.
SNL is riding its best ratings in like 20 years, and it's all from bashing Trump and his minions. I'm not surprised.

Stephen Colbert has been on point. Have been watching his monologues ever since the primaries on youtube. He gives me hope in these dark times.

I like watching Seth's "Closer Look" segment as well.

Fallon's strength and his weakness is he is super bland and inoffensive. That "oh look I love the 90s" bullshit doesn't play for the 11:30 crowd. He isn't bad, but he isn't exciting, daring, or smart either

Pretty much. He's not a cerebral, observational, witty, or political comedian in any sense. He's a slapstick guy. Slapstick is great, but you have to know how to use it. Using it every night for shallow jokes isn't all that entertaining.

With Stewart no longer doing the daily show, all people have left is Stephen who was arguably the second most popular political satirist, and John Oliver on HBO. And the latter is in a premium network while the former is on national TV.

Wasn't Stephen Colbert like way behind a while ago? Guess whatever he's doing is paying off. I love the guy so good for him.

Every new late show has some initial growing pains. CBS wrongfully thought that viewers would line up for a neutered Colbert who shifted his focus away from politics.

I'm sure Colbert would prefer to be doing some light ribbing of President Hillary Clinton right now but circumstances led to this situation where he is back to his old biting satire self and CBS took the leash off, ratings have been strong for a while now.

Conan has definitely come across a bit deflated since the whole Late Night fiasco

Fallon lost his viewers because Colbert is satirizing Trump, and that's what a bunch of people want. But if Fallon tries his hand at satire in response, he'll lose even more viewers because he'll piss off the Trump fans that do watch him AND he won't gain back the lost eyeballs because any Trump satire he tries will still be worse than Colbert.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Wonderful karma.

As gross as that Trump moment was -- it was certainly gross and I have had a hard time watching him at all since -- but if he doesn't feel comfortable doing politics, he shouldn't force himself to do it.

But that doesn't mean he should be tussling the hair of an admitted sexual assaulter either. He can not touch topics while also not doing "gee golly gosh" interviews with racists.

Colbert's weaknesses are in his guest lineup and some of his one-off bits, but now that the gloves are off for Trump, his monologues have been straight fire.

I'm hoping that with the better ratings they can get on some more interesting guests that Colbert can sink his teeth into. Back when he first started the late show he had some great interviews with Rumsfeld and other politicians and had some moments up there with his best Colbert Report interviews.

Fallon can go harder on Trump, but it's just going to come off as manufactured.

Fallon the type of dude who would do a remote segment with Trump at "The Wall" groundbreaking and laugh with him while he helps lay the bricks.

On site jokes:
Fallon: So what's the world record height for a Mexican pole vaulter?
Trump: I'm not sure, why?
Fallon: We need to make the wall at least that high
Trump: And then make it 10 feet higher
Fallon: HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAA

Not sure why people blame this shift on his 90s shtick etc. He was winning the ratings battle with that all along.

What's changed is an asshole is President and people want to see the asshole torn apart and Fallon has not been doing that. Meanwhile Colbert is a well established personality in the Political Mockery arena. Its an area Fallon honestly cannot compete

if bigotry was on the table, Fallon would only fake laugh at it and call it "totally crazy".

Right? It's not in his character. And it would likely turn off his audience who don't want to hear that shit.

Should just be happy with what he has, can't always be #1. Or whatever it was.

It's too big to ignore though, and if that's the penalty, thats the penalty.

I'm sure there's a new bathroom towel opening happening somewhere he can mainline to offset this for his earnings at least.

Good for Colbert, I'll always be a fan of the guy.

Now withers get rid of the celeb interviews, or choose better guests, because those have mostly been rough after the Colbert Report.

But yeah someone mentioned Conan does the Trump stuff really well. He doesn't go over in-depth about the events like Colbert or Seth but he blasts him in a more comedic manner... which still isn't suitable for Fallon because the material requires an offensive edge and Fallon can't do that.

Yeah, Conan is an expert at integrating these topics into his act without it becoming overbearing.

Ah I see, I missed that damn, ok.

Let the Fallon shit continue. My bad guys I didn't know lol.

He really has. My dad is pissed that Colbert is doing so well now. He was emailing CBS weekly to say how he was disgusted with the content of the programming and how crude it was.

For political commentary on network TV, it's really hard to beat Colbert in general and Meyers' "Closer Look".

Colbert has done something I thought was impossible with this stale late night formula...his monologues are the part of the show I look forward to seeing the most.

In Fallon's defense, in 2015, it was easy to have a light-hearted, nostalgic, fun show. The state of the world has changed. In 2017, we're too damn jaded and cynical (understandably) to be able to enjoy that.

Conan's political stuff was always pretty cartoonish -- the Smigel clutch cargo gag on Bill Clinton was very much from the Dana Carvey school of political impressions. Now that we have a president who is a cartoon, reality has more or less caught up to Conan. I really like his Obama/Trump phone call bits. His show in Mexico was a nice rejoinder to Trumpish nativism as well.

Never understood why a show appealing to people staying up past 11:30 would ever feel the need to be "safe".

There is huge market for that right now. That's what tons of people want, just as they did during Bush's presidency.
