Fallon forced to change ‘Tonight Show’ amid Colbert ratings wins

This is kinda hilarious. An all-flash no-substance viral video machine wins while the world is good, and then when the world is bad people come crawling back to someone of substance looking for answers. And it's worth noting that Fallon isn't even the best no substance viral video generator on late night -- Corden laps him on that front.
We Brits are sorry for dropping off Corden at your shores, America. But keep him, he fits the shallow entertainment business :)

Fallon doesn't have the writers or the chops for "more political."

Not only this, but it has the risk of driving away viewers who like him at least in part because he doesn't delve much into politics in the first place. And if the increased emphasis on political jokes and satire doesn't make up for those that turn away, then obviously he's even worse off.

Good. Colbert puts out the better product and it isn't even close. His monologues, particularly recently, are exceptional and getting bolder by the day. It's great stuff and must-watch as far as current political comedy/satire goes.

Fallon's show feels like Total Request Live or Sesame Street for nostalgic 90s kids. It's played out.

Damn, the Fallon hate is surreal.

I was a fan, but I've since grown out of his work, but I don't shit on it like so many here do.

I'm honestly kinda surprised that Colbert is winning people over in such a mainstream platform. He openly shits on Trump every single day and his guests frequently do the same.
Clinton won the popular vote and Republicans by and large are underrepresented in the realm of comedy for obvious reasons.

All late night shows are awful...AWFUL. Fallon is doing what he was put on there to do a safe by the numbers show. But whoever put him in that spot wont get the blame, he will.

The real winner in late night is and has always been Carson Daly. Sitting comfortably in that 1 am or 2 am spot whenever that show comes on for over a decade or so now.

That show is still on?
Yes, it quietly gets renewed year after year. It's Carson and the camera man, it's probably more expensive to air infomercials now then his show.
Pretty much. He's not a cerebral, observational, witty, or political comedian in any sense. He's a slapstick guy. Slapstick is great, but you have to know how to use it. Using it every night for shallow jokes isn't all that entertaining.

yeah Kevin Hart and Conan are slapstick people, in some ways it takes more talent to do that long term then most other forms of comedy.

He's just not a host.

Fallon would be a great side kick.

Take notes boys and girls. This is what happens when you are a corporate shill. No amount of toy instruments can save you.

who the fuck gave a talkshow host an amusment park ride? someone should be fired.
It's Universal. No surprise there. Even worse is the queue has a tribute to all former hosts and lists the years they hosted, including Conan. Fucking depressing seeing that.

What is this ride like? I can't imagine "late night talk show personality" as a logical theme.

Lorne for some reason had a crush on Fallon despite his huge lack of talent. Colbert on the other hand is unbelievably talented, and his show is just getting better.

Honestly it's because Colbert does real political commentary. No one wants fluff right now and that's all Fallon has.

Man, Fallon gets way too much hate on GAF.

Fallon has always been harmless and thats fine, it works for him. We don't need another late night political show.

We already have John Oliver, Seth Meyers, Samantha Bee, Daily Show, Colbert etc etc.

Fallon needs to stick to his own thing. I'm not his biggest fan, but I don't hate the guy.

It's almost refreshing hes not going after Trump.

And for the record, I despise Donald Trump. I think he is a POS.

If he had stuck to that, people wouldn't be hating on him, but that changed the day he had Donald Trump on there and treated him like he wasn't a POS.
He can't be worse than the "IT'S THE CURRENT YEAR PEOPLE" guy. He's fucking annoying.

Is that you /pol/?

Fallon's monologues are terrible, the worst on TV. Just cut that entirely and bring on more spoof segments. That's the best they're gonna do.

Maybe in the future we'll get a thread that says

Fallon forced to quit ‘Tonight Show’ amid Colbert ratings wins

Who would replace Fallon anyway. I think the Tonight Show is just fucked.

CBS crowed Tuesday that former Comedy Central host Colbert won the ratings race for a fifth straight week in overall viewers, growing 29 percent from the same time last year. But a “Tonight Show” source said, “Fallon continues to enjoy a lead over Colbert in the 18 to 49 [demographic], which is more important in the industry than the overall viewership.” They said Colbert’s recent string of wins has gotten slimmer each time.

So maybe not, then.

Fallon needed another decade or more to learn how to host one of these shows in the late night slot. The Conan/Leno stuff followed by Leno coming back and then leaving almost right away thrust him into the big chair as some dope that didn't know what he was doing.

He was number 1 for a while there, though. I don't think it's about a lack of experience, I just think that public tastes changed. He's still all light and fluffy and inoffensive, and people are looking for something a little harder-edged right now.

YouTube apps love to recommend late night clips and any time I'd watch one from Fallon it was a celebrity participating in some silly game or bit and usually being great at playing along while Fallon seemed to struggle to think of things to say or swing and miss at a joke. It never made me want to start tuning into the show.
