Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

What's the best radio station mod for New Vegas?

Radio New Vegas - The Secret Stash.

Adds like 80 songs that fit the game, songs the developers likely wanted but could not license. Songs that the quests were named after.

is there any recommendations for any adult mods? i wouldn't mind being a pretty girl or seeing them ingame.

i'm still downloading the game off steam, already grabbed the hires texture pack. gonna spend a few hours later modding it up. thanks for the thread, made it rather easy.

So I've heard a lot of bad things about Fallout 3 GOTY, how it is much less stable than regular Fallout 3. I own both Fallout 3 and Fallout 3 GOTY retail discs. Would I avoid whatever problems come with the GOTY version by installing base Fallout 3 with the regular retail disc, patching it, then installing the DLC from the second GOTY disc which appears to just have the DLC on it?

At first I thought this was a ll a bit a silly, but I just booted up the game for the first time before installing any mods just to make sure it was working and it crashed, so now I'm worried.

Try my earlier suggestions, maybe?
Compatibility:Settings:Windows XP SP3 mode
Compatibility:Settings:Disable visual themes
(Optional?) Windowed mode

See if that keeps it stable. In my experience GOTY Steam version was very stable but I wouldn't be surprised if those settings make a difference given all of the problems I had with NV.

I never had problems with Fallout 3 GOTY on Steam running Windows......Vista.

Try the other suggestions with compatibility mode, I know I'll be doing that when I run New Vegas tomorrow after it finishes downloading.

Just go to the newvegasnexus and sort the models and textures section with most downloads/endorsements & ascending, and pick your favorite. And of course do the same for every other section as well and then spend a whole day just downloading mods!

I'm a little unclear about how to create a fomod file from mods that don't come with their own fomod or fomod ready.

I'm trying to do this with Fellout. There is a PFP already for Fellout on Nexus, but it uses 1.22, and the most recent version of Fellout is 1.23.

So I download everything on the Fellout website and extract them all. There is the Fellout 1_21R2 folder which contains the base. Then there is Fellout 1.23 folder which contains a new .esp called Fellout-Full.esp, which is the same name as the .esp in the base 1.21 folder. There is also a greener grass folder I want to use which contains a new texture which replaces the one used in the original Fellout 1.21 folder and DLC Support folder which contains .esp's for all the DLC.

So seeing as how the 1.23 .esp and greener grass will be overwriting files in the initial fellout I decide to combine them into one fellout complete folder that has the fellout-full.esp from 1.23, greener grass texture, and everything else as found in fellout 1.21. I know by doing this I'm losing the ability to easily uninstall the greener grass and 1.23 updates, but since this is how it would be if I were just installing the mods without FOMM I'm okay with that.

Here's the question:
So I go to package manager, Create a FOMod, direct it to my new Fellout Complete folder which has Fellout-Full.esp and a textures folder. But what files do I add to the right "FOMod Files" window? Just the .esp? The esp and all the texture files?

Edit: Heh, I'm thinking about becoming a premium member of Nexus just for a month to speed up this download process. I appreciate why they need ads, but when you're dl'ing tens to hundreds of files it can get pretty annoying.

I just downloaded Fellout 1.21 since I'm nowhere near my modded PC at the moment. It looks like what you want to do is:

- Extract Fellout 1.21r2 to a folder
- Overwrite the ESP in that folder with the one in Fellout 1.23
- Add the ESP and the textures folder to the FOMOD

As a general rule the insides of a FOMOD should look like the inside of your Data folder, so any ESP or ESM files go in the root and everything else goes under folders which indicate the contents (i.e. textures, sound, meshes etc).

Perfect! You don't really need the readme files but it can't hurt to have them there if you want to refer to them post-install.

EDIT: Wait! Not perfect!

The ESP should be outside the textures folder, sorry I missed the little dotted line.

EDIT AGAIN: Er actually maybe it is outside. It's 0540 here right now.

Thanks! It is outside, although I know it's hard to see that it is because it's below (I added it first).

Edit: I think I'm done trying to work with PFPs. So far it's just been trouble when making FOMods are so easy (slight differences in versions I think is the root of the problem). We'll see if I feel this way after everything is installed and I'm trying to play.

getting started with modding. i just read the FOSE read me and it says it does not work with the steam version, so i guess i just skip it? and i'm really confused, do i use FOSE or FOMM to load my game? i just installed fallout mod manager and unzipped FOSE but haven't installed it. looking through mods now atm.

Once you have FOMM installed, just copy the contents of the FOSE archive directly into your Fallout 3 folder. Next time you launch the game from inside FOMM it will automatically launch it using FOSE if it's in the right place.

FOSE doesn't technically work with Steam, but you need it so don't skip it. Basically if you run the game using FOSE you are bypassing the Steam EXE and stuff so it can't track your time or anything, but it will work and I've never been banned or even warned by Valve for it.

I can't get aHud or iHud to work. I installed Mod Configuration Menu and then put the archive file for aHud in the Data folder. Nothing's working. It doesn't even show up in MCM in-game.

I don't use either of those but they both come in FOMOD format so you shouldn't be moving the archive file anywhere. Just open the .fomod with FOMM

Ha, now I remember how to activate those files. I'm a dummy.

I'm looking at Nevada Skies right now, but I don't know which file to download. NSkies 0-6 Data? NSkies 0-6-3 ESP? NSkies 0-7 Vanilla Edition? NSkies 0-7 Data?

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35998

Also, is the New Vegas Script Extender NECESSARY?

Im not using the script extender and all my mods NVS included work fine, theyd probably work better with the SE though, I wouldnt know.

i think you download the first two from the top left, and the other two are for the vanilla version?

side note - I`m tweaking the fuck out of my .ini file right now. awww yeah high quality audio please?

I've been using Nevada Skies since it came out almost, and most of its releases have been pretty stable. If you are not using NVKies with another mod (URWL, Fellout, etc) just get 0-7 vanilla edition (the esp) and the 0-7 data. If you are using another mod that adjusts lighting and darkness, then you probably want the Nskies 0-6-3 esp and the 0-6 data plus any relevant optional plugin mod.
Nskies does not need NVSE, which I use for other mods. It should have no effect one way or the other.

Here are the mods I want to use:

Nevada Skies
A World of Pain
Project Nevada
Weapons Mod Expanded
MTUI
ELECTRO-CITY
New Vegas Bounties I
Radio New Vegas - The Secret Stash

Thinking about:

Enhanced Shaders
EVE - Visual Enhancements

Questions:

1. The reason I'm wary about Enhanced Shaders (or any texture/shader mods) is because I have a mid-level PC and I feel it'll be too taxing. Are my worries unfounded?

2. Also, is there a better radio station mod than Secret Stash?

3. And finally, anything essential I'm missing from my mod list for a first play-through? Also, will I need the NVSE to install any of them, or will the Mod Manager suffice?

Have you tried:

I was having a fairly steady occurrence of lockup/freezes and after applying those two fixes, played a good 2 hours yesterday without a single freeze. *fingers crossed*

No, I haven't even gotten to playing yet, I'm still modding! I'm almost done though, then we'll see how things go. I did just install Fallout 3 retail, patch it, then install the DLC from the GOTY disc. Figured it can't hurt and might help, but I will keep that link and the other tips mentioned above in mind if I run into any troubles.

Quick modding question. I've decided I'm going to go without Fallout Wanderer Edition for this play through but am still using EVE, Project Beauty, MMM, and WMK which are all part of FOIP. But looking at the FOIP page on the nexus there are no compatability patches between these, mostly it's between FWE/FOOK and thes. So am I correct in thinking I don't need to install any CP? I know I still have to do the FO3Edit merged patch.

1. On my rig (i've got a 2.66ghz quad core, a Geforce 9800GTX+ and 6 gigs of RAM), i couldn't get even the enhanced shaders to work. I guess it's a mid range PC, so it might give you some idea what to expect. That mod can be toggled on and off from inside the game, so you should just try it and see if the performance hit's worth it.

2.CONELRAD's pretty decent as well. You can always combine them.

3.As far as color mods go, i like Fellout NV a lot better than UWRL. Might be worth installing that. The weapons retexture project has a minimum performance hit and looks great. New Vegas Restoration and Freeside Restoration are two other great mods that make Vegas look a little better and closer to what i think Obsidian envisioned. NVR is somewhat performance heavy, but i find the change is worth it. I'm also gonna try Dog City Denver. It's a restoration of a city that was in the original Van Buren. Haven't tried it yet, but it shows lots of promise.

messed with a bunch of mods the other day. they were great, but i was mainly just experimenting, but i full comfortable modding everything now.

now i want to do a full playthrough.

i'm going to use Project Beauty HD, NMC’s Texture Pack, and DC Interiors Project. maybe a mod to get rid of weapon degradation.

that's about all the mods i want. i saw this was touched on a little bit, but will i be able to get it to run on steam with those mods listed? thanks. i really like palying games on steam only, heh.

Okay, thanks. What's everyone else's opinion on Fellout NV vs. Nevada Skies?

What's with the reluctance to install NVSE anyway? It's like 100kb and needs to be unzipped to your game folder...

Yes.

Hmm, one of the mods was really killing my processor (e8400 @ 3.6Ghz) so that even when I dropped the resolution to 720p and turned off aa, af, hdr, etc. and was indoors (like vault 101 ) I was still getting regular fps drops to 20. Turned all the mods off and I'm back at 30-50 fps where I normally am.

I just noticed your question about FOIP further up the page, there actually is a very small (~50kb) FOIP patch for Project Beauty + F:WE which might solve your problem here.

So Gaf... Am I doing it wrong?

I'm trying to use NMC's texture pack for New Vegas. I place the Texture and Meshes folders into the Data folder, place the Archive invalidation tool in with it and it doesn't work..

What am I missing?

EDIT: Never mind. It worked.

Guys, I keep getting this error message when I start the game up:

"There seems to be a problem with your Project Nevada installation because the HUD extensions were not detected."

My load order is as follows:

FalloutNV.esm
AWorldOfPain(Preview).esm
Project Nevada - Core.esm
Project Nevada - Equipment.esm
ELECTRO-CITY - Highways and Byways.esm
ELECTRO-CITY - CompletedWorkorders.esm
Project Nevada - Cyberware.esp
CONELRAD 640-1240.esp
NewVegasBounties.esp
Nevada Skies - URWLified.esp
ELECTRO-CITY - Darker Nights.esp
Project Nevada - Rebalance.esp

I also installed MTUI.

Anyone know what the issue may be? Also, I'm almost certain my load order is incorrect. Any thoughts on how to adjust it?

Delete your 'menus' folder in the 'data' folder. Then reinstall MTUI. I had this same exact issue and that fixed it.

MrOogieBoogie, you might also be interested in New Vegas Redesigned. It's the New Vegas equivalent of FO3's Project Beauty, by the same author. He's not supporting it anymore and the mod in the nexus was set to private, but that link works. It's a damn shame we'll never see it finished.

Any idea why he abandoned it?

Didn't seem to help. Still get the same error message. When you say "reinstall MTUI," you mean simply moving the Menu and Texture folders into the Data folder, right?

Also, how do I turn off mouse acceleration?

Also, I may have done something to make the URWL stop working because I'm no longer getting light shafts through the windows in the very beginning of the game.

No idea about mouse acceleration. I use a 360 controller. Yes. Thats what I mean. Also how did you install Project Nevada? Did you make a FOMOD?

I followed the steps on the Nexus page, so yeah, I made a FOMod. That's the only FOMod I have.

Ok, try deactivating it through the package manager in the FOMM. Then reactivating it.

Dude, are you a wizard? That worked! Awesome.

Now my only concern is that UWRL is deactivated for whatever reason. I could've swore there were light shafts coming through the windows at the beginning of the game, but now I don't see any. What the hell?

Glad that worked :D. Not sure about URWL. Load order change?

Well, I just confirmed my suspicions. I started a new game, and when you're talking with the doc in the beginning there are lights shafts coming in through the window beside him. However, if I save and reload my game, they're not there anymore and it's as if it became nighttime outside. It's very strange.

Can't say. He stopped replying to posts in the Nexus forums and pulled down the mod from the site and no one has heard from him in months. All very mysterious...

Some alternatives that might be worth trying: NPC Cosmetic Fixes and selected NPCs revamped

Modding New Vegas is a game in itself...

He's working on DA2. No clue why but I think he was frustrated when people keep asking him to make a bunch of doll faces but he wanted something that goes with FO lore.

So... he thought the Bioware fanbase would be less creepy? Not an assumption I'd make, personally.

I'm looking to get into New Vegas, I've modded the shit out of Oblivion and Fallout 3 and I'm just tired of all the effort put into making mods work together or having them be unstable.

I'm mostly looking for tried and true, stable mods that work well together and make the game easy to navigate and look better. I'm not adverse to added content though.

I will be grabbing all the dlc, Fallout 3 felt incomplete without it, so I imagine New Vegas is the same.

So, what mods are must haves that fit my criteria?

Hey you did stop by!

BravesCountry had a great list a couple of pages back:

From what information I have gathered..my guess is:

Fallout Mod Manager

Nevada Skies

Project Nevada

ELECTRO-CITY Relighting the Wasteland

Interior Lighting Overhaul - Realistic Interiors

MTUI - UI Overhaul

There are other ones such as A World of Pain but I heard that unbalances the game so apparently its better not to have it on a first playthrough.

Quasi-Essential ( Since I haven't played, someone needs to tell me if this mod is essential or not):

Weapon Mods Expanded

Centered Third Person Camera

Immersive HUD

EVE - Essential Visual Enhancements

Also these look like good mods but aren't essential:

Increased Wasteland Spawns - This one intrigues me a lot, I feel like it could greatly improve the gameplay experience.

Better Casinos

Realistic Gunshot Sounds

DK Female Face Textures

Official Pipboy Readius - New Vegas Addition

DOF Depth of Field or SSAO_FocusDOF_AHDR_Mod

Top Bottom
