Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

Well, I just confirmed my suspicions. I started a new game, and when you're talking with the doc in the beginning there are lights shafts coming in through the window beside him. However, if I save and reload my game, they're not there anymore and it's as if it became nighttime outside. It's very strange.

Anyone have any clue why the mod seems to reset everytime I load a previous game?

Adding BOSS to that list. Takes the headache out of sorting the load order.

Are you loading the save while already playing? It's usually best to quit to the main menu and reload the save from there as loading while already inside a game can cause massive conflict problems and mod hiccups. If that still doesn't work try changing cell (going outside or into another building) and waiting 24 hours.

Damn, watching that vid gives me the indication that modding NV is a real hassle :(:(:(

Installing 90% of mods involves copying the .esp and Meshes, Textures e.t.c. folders into your Data folder. That's it. If you're just starting out with modding don't bother trying to create FOMods, they are just for convenience sake and aren't a required thing to do. Interface mods require a little extra .ini editing in order to get the fonts to look right, but the readme will give you everything you need in order to do that.

And tbh that video was needlessly complicated.

No, I haven't even gotten to playing yet, I'm still modding! I'm almost done though, then we'll see how things go. I did just install Fallout 3 retail, patch it, then install the DLC from the GOTY disc. Figured it can't hurt and might help, but I will keep that link and the other tips mentioned above in mind if I run into any troubles.

Quick modding question. I've decided I'm going to go without Fallout Wanderer Edition for this play through but am still using EVE, Project Beauty, MMM, and WMK which are all part of FOIP. But looking at the FOIP page on the nexus there are no compatability patches between these, mostly it's between FWE/FOOK and thes. So am I correct in thinking I don't need to install any CP? I know I still have to do the FO3Edit merged patch.

Definitely. I'm glad I bookmarked Apana's post last month, because I had 4 freezes in the first 2 hours (that required control-alt-delete) to escape from. I've played 5 hours without a single issue since I applied that simple fix. For anyone that has the issue, it makes a huge difference knowing you can enter/exit buildings without the threat of the game freezing on you.

Questions, questions.

- I'm only buying one of them, Fo3 or NV?

- How are the mod installs? I'm used to putting together my own compilations for various games, any difficulty?

- How much of Wanderers Edition/Project Nevada is optional? I don't want any of the new weapons, visors and stuff. Is it 'easy' to modify them to suit my taste?

Personally, New Vegas.

If you're used to modding you will have no problem. FO3 and FNV were created with modding in mind.

Project Nevada let's you tweak a lot of values in game, things like damage rates, food healing, timescale, damage threshold levels, health/weight/ap modifiers e.t.c. as well as disabling or enabling certain features like bullet time, sprinting, explosion knockdown, visors e.t.c. Unfortunately stuff it adds to the game like the new weapons and armour cannot be removed or disabled unless you feel like getting your hands dirty in the GECK, which I wouldn't recommend.

Yup, started crashing as soon as I got out of the vault. Applied those changes, haven't had a crash since and played for about 6 hours yesterday. Thanks for linking them!

Actually, you can just not install the Equipment plug-in, but yeah, you can't disable specific items.

I really wish to know that is there any brand new mod to make the Mark II Stealth Suit to not talk anymore related to Ord Wold Blues DLC of New Vegas. I'm sick of it and I'm not complaining about the voice, but every time I crouch, is starting to talk about me or the pip-boy light because I do that every five seconds and without the light I don't see anything in dark corners; these phrase are all over in my head for some quite good time. I want to stop them but I can't turn off the sound voice because I will not hear the other voices or anything it has to do with people voices. >:|

When such mod will be made or available, one will be pleased to post it here. I'm not used of browsing the Fallout universe mod websites but I do browse this topic.

I haven't mod my game but I will do it to fix this annoying bug.

I want to make better looking characters, is there a mod that adds better facial features, and things like that.
DK Female Face Textures is a good texture replacement for female faces, unfortunately there isn't an equivalent mod for male faces. Hi Res Eyes is worth installing too, stops characters from looking soulless. Mikoto's Pack adds a lot of new hairs/eyes/presets to the game. I'd recommend installing Mikoto's first before DK's textures and the hi res eyes to avoid Mikoto's overwriting them. If you're familiar with the GECK then creating new presets in it gives you many more options for editing the face, it's usually what I use when creating new characters. There is a guide for creating decent looking Oblivion characters here, most of the info and tips there apply to FNV too, even the console commands are the same.

There is a mod to disable the voice here. Unfortunately the script that handles the voice is also the one responsible for the auto-chem usage. So the armour won't automatically drug you up anymore.

If all else fails you can always check the Saved Game section of the Nexus, download a character that looks decent and give it a few tweaks.

Haven't watched the vid, but most cases i just open FOMM, press add mod, pick my mod, then activate it through FOMM, and let BOSS do the load order. It's pretty automated by now. Only thing is checking for incompatibilities every now and then, but even then you can just install whatever you want, and use FNVEdit to check for incompatibilities and correct them (though this is advanced stuff and you shouldn't try it unless you're confident of what you're doing).

Project Nevada's modular, so you can skip installing the new weapons and armor or implants or whatever you don't like. The visors can be turned off in-game and if you have MCM, you can play with the loot, damage, experience, etc. values in-game, too.

Not really a solution but you can also use Cateye to see in the dark.

I'm glad I made my mind to post this issue here and I'm very happy to know that, the stimpack and med-x features are turned off. I really disliked them.

Thank you so much Ponti, you saved my day. Now let the hunting begin.

I have a few mod conflicts that I haven't been able to fix. I've deleted some of the ones that I decided I don't need (iHud/aHud, Pipboy Readius, for example) but I have two strange problems left.

First, my skyboxes are warped and show the wrong textures everwhere. Like this:

Second, MTUI doesn't work with NPC conversations. It seems to work fine in the Pipboy. I've had several mods that modify the UI so I don't know how to restore it to default. Do I have to delete the menu folder and start the game?

Third, ShilohDS's map isn't working. I can configure it with FOMM, but the texture is the default, yet the custom zoom level is present. How the hell do I fix that?

And finally, my mod loading order

Did you try BOSS Auto Sort in FOMM?

I'm having a problem of my own. In FO3 when I start the game and then try to save it crashes. I have found two ways to fix it. One is to load a save that is in a different area then the one I am in. The second is to blow myself up, reload the same save, and then I can save. After the initial fix I can then save as many times as I want until I close the game and I have the exact same problem next time I start it again.

So now I carry around some mines to kill myself every time I start the game. Anyone know how to fix this permanently? Or an easier way to fix it temporarily like a console command or something.

Just tried it and I still get the "FalloutNV has stopped working...".

EDIT: I disabled all of the indoor lights mods and its working now.

I'm having random crashing, mostly happens when loading from indoor to outdoor, sometimes while just walking around. Here's my Mods and load order, I haven't really messed with it because I'm not sure what needs to be loaded first:
IPnpO.png

Also running NMC's texture pack if that's relevant.

Any incompatibilities that need to be fixed or does anything need to be moved around?

Depth of Field IE and Depth of Field IE Blur shouldn't both be enabled. You don't need the PerkEveryLevel mod either as you can enable that in Project Nevadas settings.

Grab the compatibility patches for PN (the DLCs and WMX).

Unless you plan on installing the Rust Town mod I would just delete the ILO-Rust Town plugin for it as enabling that without Rust Town will cause CTD's.

Also install and run BOSS to sort your load order.

First off I'd run BOSS to sort out the load order if you haven't already. You might need to reinstall some of your mods to properly sort some things out.

After the load order is done go into your New Vegas Data folder. Go into textures and there should be a folder in there called sky. Delete it. Start up the game again and make sure the skybox is back to normal (it should be). If there isn't a sky folder there than it's a mod compatibility problem and makes this a bit more complicated.

For MTUI I would suggest just reinstalling it completely. It sounds like either some files were missed during installation or another mod has overwritten MTUI's files. A reinstall will solve it either way. Installing UI's takes a bit more than copy pasting folders so make sure to read the readme (you might need to do some .ini editing, can't say for sure as I don't use MTUI).

For Shiloh's map go into your texture folder again and look for a folder called interface, open that up and there should be another folder called worldmap. In that folder should be a file called something like 'wasteland_nv_1024_no_map.dds'. If you have an image editing/viewing program that can open .dds files open it up and see if it is coloured (it should be). If that file doesn't exist than it was either misplaced or didn't install properly. If that happens then redownload Shiloh Colored Map again and copy paste the texture folder into your Data folder.

Any suggestions on what to use: WMX or WME?

I fixed my skybox and MTUI, but ShilohDS is only partially installed - the map is green but it has the custom icons and I think the texture is part of Shiloh. I'm satisfied for now.

Finally finished the main quest line from the second new vegas bounties mod yesterday. Loved how the end was an amalgamation of different western movie climaxes. Shame the third part won't be done any time soon.

I'd suggest checking into this really wonderful series of tutorials that recently popped up on the nexus. I'd highly recommend these to anyone who's serious about modding their fallout game. The first part lays down some crucial basics on running FOMODs that make installing and removing mods quite easy. The latest installment that covers Performance contains some truly game saving advice on expanding memory usage and using a "stealth" windowed mode to increase stability. Beyond that, there is solid step-by-step video that illustrates how to install some of the most popular new vegas mods.

1. Part 1: User Interface
2. Part 2: Project Nevada
3. Part 3: Nevada Skies
4. Part 4: Visual Enhancements
5. Part 5: FNVEdit
6. Part 6: Weapon Animation Replacers
7. Part 7: Performance

To be honest I nearly replied to that post with "sadly that ain't gonna happen until the GOTY version comes out and they're not patching or releasing content for the game any more".

OK!...ok... I finally took the plunge last night and installed NV. Woke up today and started thinking about which mods to use. Reading through this thread and picking up tups here and there.

What I'm looking after for my first playthrough is basically just visual enhancements to the game ( that is I'm not really out for content in the form of quests, missions, and stuff like that on my 1st run ) and a that radio/song mod someone mentioned that I've forgotten the name of.

So here's what I downloaded so far :

- MTUI
- Interior Lightning Overhauld
- Nvskies
- EVE
- Ojo bueno hq textures
- ( radio mod )

How does that look? Will there be any conflict? Is there anything I should keep in mind ?

edit : Ok so I installed the bolded ones by putting all the relevant files in the Data folder, lets see if it boots :[

Hmm, the OJO texture pack states I've gotta use this archive invalidation tool. I downloaded it and ran it but I can't seem to get things to work :( and I already overwrote tons of files in my data folder so I guess FOMM is out of the question right now.

edit : figured it out.

On another another note:

1)is there an easy way to know all my mods are up and running now?
2) What are gafs views on playing the game with 360 pad vs kb&m?

edit 2 :

Welp, botched everything to shit... Couldn't go out of doc mitchells house in the first 2minutes of the game, tried disabling all mods in the launcher but no use. Gonna re-download/install the entire game and try again, this time with nvse/fomm etc etc, wouldn't be surprised if it still ate it and died. Fuck...

edit 325376457364578237853785278352378 :

dear god I'm soo fucking aggravated right now, just looking at the nevada skies mod, it's either the authors installation tips :

"
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

-----------------------------------
Version 1: Vanilla Edition:

- NSkies 0-7 - Vanilla Edition
- NSkies 0-7 Data"

Great, I now JUST what to do. Or it's the 15 minutes "tutorial" on youtube that my mongoloid brain can't follow for shit. I think it's for the best if I just stick to unmodded vegas.

Sorry for the bump/triple post.... I'm going to be as calm and comprehensible as possible.

I've reinstalled new vegas.
I've installed nvse.
I've installed fomm.
this is what my fomm look like (probably tons of errors that I can't understand because I'm stupid) I've followed the load order suggested in the readmes :
YISew.png

This is what happens with incompatibility mode turned ON! :
ybvFj.png

This is what happens with incompatibility mode turned OFF! :
TWjhH.png

Can someone please....please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Can I just uninstall the mods/fomm and play the game vanilla or do I have to redownload/reinstall it a third time? I don't think I'd be able to stomach even launching the game with all this bs.

edit : Given up.

I've installed most of the main mods mentioned here, and I can't help but notice how dark some interiors are.
Even with the flashlight mod and the Pip Boy light, I'm having difficulty seeing.
I doesn't help that I'm in the house with all the scary dogs it in either.

I'm surprised no one seems to have the centered 3rd person camera but more importantly anyone got an update on that Resident Evil 2 Total Conversion?!

Alright so I'm getting ready to play Fallout 3, and I've downloaded NMC's full texture pack, but I'm wondering if I would be able to handle the max bump maps as well. This might be a stupid question, but anyway, in the description it says:
(For those with Overclocked i5 or i7's, Crossfire/SLI, 4GB+ RAM, with Raptors, Raid 0, or better still Solid State Drives)
And I've got a single SC GTX 580, i7 2600k (but not overclocked), 8GB RAM, and a SATA 2 (falsely advertised as SATA 3) Seagate 2TB hard drive. So this may be a stupid question, because I'm aware I've basically got top of the line everything, but I'm not running SLI and have an unremarkable HDD. So I'm hoping someone here has used the max bump map with a card similar to mine or lower and knows if I can use it and get good performance.

Awesome, thanks for the advice!

Corky, try unticking each mod in FOMM until it stops crashing. If it doesn't, try deactivating them in the Package Manager. Sometimes, mods that are incompatible with each other just make NV crash on startup. If that doesn't work either, i'm afraid it's reinstalling time :/

For future modding endeavors, try to backup the gamefolder somewhere else in case you screw up. Also, next time, just use FOMM to install mods. You can click the "create from folder" button in the Package Manager, select a .zip and it'll usually treat it as a .FOMOD (special FO3 & NV packages for easy mod installs) and automatically unpack it where it's due. I don't think it works with shader mods and the likes, but it's the way to go in most cases.

Don't give up!

What is the best of the gameplay overhaul mods for FO3? Wanderers Edition looks interesting, as does FOOK2 and Mart's Mutant Mod. Particularly looking for something that does a good job balancing the in-game economy. The first 2/3s to 3/4 of FO1 and FO2 were particularly awesome because everything was a struggle (getting powerful enough weapons, getting ammo, stimpacks etc.).

Cheers mate, I tried all of the above before uninstalling the game. In the end, all I wanted were Nevada skies and Ojo Bueno texture pack. But I'm going to download the game one final time and just run vanilla, it's way too much of a hassle even with FOMM since it apparently made my crashes even more frequent.

Can someone please....please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Can I just uninstall the mods/fomm and play the game vanilla or do I have to redownload/reinstall it a third time? I don't think I'd be able to stomach even launching the game with all this bs.

edit : Given up.
Sorry I completely missed this and I notice you've given up but ILO-Rust Town was your problem. Plugins with missing masters will give you an instant CTD when you start the game.
