Used to love Family Guy, now it's pretty boring

Used to hate American Dad, now it's pretty hilarious

Never thought Bob's Burgers could or would be funny, but it's hilarious

Saw one episode of Rick and Morty (admittedly I was high) and it was hilarious

Rick and Morty is one of the greatest animated shows I've ever seen.

I haven't watched a Family Guy episode since the one with
Brian's death.

Even at that point, I was tired of the constant "Peter is an idiot", puke, and poop jokes.

My only real beef with Family Guy is that it's all the same tropes from other animated family sitcoms blended into one.

The first couple seasons were good because at least Peter was apologetic somewhat, but now he's just comes off as mean spirited. Only character that managed to remain consistent is Chris, probably the only likeable character on the show. I like the Brian/Stewie episodes because you see much depth with those two even if they argue.

Maybe I'm showing my age, but getting tired of the daddy dumbass trope. Perhaps that's why Bob Burgers feels like a refreshing show compared to everything else.

I still like Family Guy, but I think people tend to overstate the greatness of the first three series. Sure, they were a funny spoof of the general US television nuclear family archetypes, but they seemed constrained and limited with what they could do with them because of that. And I'm sure the whole thing would have worn out its welcome a lot earlier had they not changed it up once the series got uncancelled.

That isn't to say some of the moments of the current series don't bother me (I think the violence is a bit excessive and kinda done for the sake of it, whenever I see them slag off religion just because), but I laugh more often than I not, and I feel that there are some moments that are worth a second look. If anything, the show's musical numbers are genuinely terrific, and speak more than ever that MacFarlane should direct a musical of his own (that one cutaway from the last episode is kind of what I would expect out of it). And while it is irritating when MacFarlane speaks his voice, they seemed to have mellowed out on it and is a lot better than whenever South Park does its overly smug "both sides are the same" shtick that has become tired at this point, even with the change in series structure. Especially since now that Brian has been demoted from Seth's mouthpiece, to pretentious poser hack.

If I had a more quantifiable explanation as to why I like it, I'd write it up, but at this point, this is pretty much the best I can come up with at the moment, so yeah...Family Guy. Not terrific, but certainly worth the vitriol that is more deserving of other genuinely terrible shows.

I haven't enjoyed Family Guy since before it was originally cancelled.

American Dad, Family Guy, Cleveland Show. Basically anything Seth McFarlane created is crap.

Bob's Burgers is where it's at now.

These are the words of someone who hasn't watched American Dad (or gave up on it after the first season, which is totally understandable because it didn't get good until the writers/Seth got over Bush winning).

How many times can they do the "Meg is finally gonna do something worthwhile and escape the horrible shit her family does to her only to backpedal and decide to stay in a horribly abusive relationship" Her parents suddenly decide they love her at the end and pretend to want the best for her. Next episode they are back to basically abusing her again.

The episode especially where she gave up being an attractive famous singer and for what?? So you can go back and be treated like dogshit but your horrible family? I hat that episode the most

The average Family Guy episode in my mind is:

Lois - "Remember that time I had an abortion"

'Flashback to: Lois falling down some stairs'

Peter - "That's not as bad as that time I had a vasectomy"

'Flashback to: Peter getting gored in the testicles at a bullfight'

Repeat ad nauseam.

I think its just the style. Family guy is more cut away gags, which when done right can be hilarious and go viral. American Dad actually had coherent storylines and plot, and less viral moments

Some of the best gags in AD are also pretty random though. In particular some quick lines, which really feel like the show must have completely different (and much funnier) writers than FG.

Dope, is it on Netflix? I gotta get down on this

Nope. Though Adult Swim has a decent amount of episodes in their website. I think they're also on cable provider streaming services, maybe Hulu too.

edit: and yeah American Dad is the best thing to have come out of the trio. People don't give it a shot thinking it's just another low quality show. But even AV Club regularly reviewed the show and gave it high grades.

People who still say that haven't seen family guy in years. Nowadays there are maybe 3 cutaway gags per episode. I wish there would be more Tbh, they allowed the team to be more random with out of nowhere punchlines.

Is there anyway to watch the new tbs American dad. They don't put those episodes on hulu :-( or Netflix :-(

Well American Dad seasons always take a while before they're put on Netflix. I'm curious if since the move to TBS if the newer seasons will be put on Netflix or not. Maybe the contract with Netflix has a priority?

Final straw for me was a season or two ago where they went to a giant island mansion or something and it was some weird murder mystery (did Brian die? I don't remember), zero laughs for the entire 22 minutes. That was just the cap to a series of mind numbingly bad episodes, I stopped watching after that and sounds like I made the right call.

I just don't get how you can work on something that is so rare, getting a show on primetime TV, and put out such junk. How many millions of people are out there that wouldn't pour their heart and soul into that kind of opportunity? I really thought maybe McFarlane & co were pissed off at Fox or something and wanted to see how far he could push them before they fired him, but I guess you just have to chalk it up to utter incompetence.

That episode is FIVE YEARS OLD

The shine has been gone from FG for years. It's the kinda thing where I turn it on for some nostalgic background noise more than anything. The actual humor(or lack there of) is inconsequential.

Now? Really? I haven't been able to sit though an episode for a very long time.
Its equally as bad as American Dad.

The gay joke phase didn't last too long. They return there every now and then but it's not bad as it used to be. Stewie was one note character in the early seasons, so I don't mind they changed him. He has his moments with Brian every now and then.
Initially Stewie was just one note of trying to kill Lois and take over the world, but his character grew significantly over the course of those 3 seasons. I really loved the friendship between him and Brian, especially during thier "Road to..." adventure episodes, the chemistry between him is amazing. Stewie used to be an intelligent megalomaniac, who despite having a war/technology room still has elements of being a baby.

New Stewie is just all over the place...first a walking gay joke...then they tried to bring back the "evil" stewie with the whole "Where's my money"(which went overboard)...now he's basically just there, unless an episode centers around him. Also recently in Stewie Is Enceinte (in what I would say is one of the worst/wierdest episodes ever), Stewie slices his DNA with Brian's and somehow manages to make him pregnant with "their" baby. Followed by an gross "birth" scene which lead to the most fucked up looking "kids" ever. All because Stewie wanted more attention from Brian (WTF!?) There's still elements of the original Stewie in the news season, like the "Road to..." adventure episodes, but as soon as he gets back he reverts back to is old ways.

Yeah... Family Guy fell off. It has moments but it's not the same.

American Dad though... Hilarious

and Steve's singing... wow. I would really buy an album

Remember Steve's: "Daddy's Home" duet with Roger lol

I agree, whoever does the voice is an awesome singer.

It's funny, I recently started marathoning through the series, and this has been my thought process:

Seasons 1 through 6 - Great, awesome TV!
Season 7 - A few dips in quality but still pretty solid.
Season 8 - Things are starting to get worse, but overall not a bad season.
Season 9 - Some good episodes and some bad episodes.
Season 10 - Okay, time to start skipping some episodes.
Season 11 - Okay now I've skipped most of the episodes.
Season 12 - All of the episodes are awful.

I used to really love this show (though my personal order was and is still Simpsons > Futurama > American Dad > Family Guy). I think things just started to become so cynical after a while. Characters like Brian and Meg were turned into punching bags by the whole family. The characters lost any depth they previously had, and the plot took a huge hit because of it. They started adding much more gore humor which is one of the changes that also ruined SpongeBob, recycled jokes (how many times do we have to hear about Rocky Dennis?); it just grew very stale.

The answer to your question is just 'yes'. As you said, its long past its prime and probably feels a little like being on a merry go round at this point. I stopped watching it a while ago because I felt the same way.

It had a good run, and it was one of those shows cancelled too early that managed to come back due to fans buying DVD's and whatnot. Its got a nice little history. Its fine to RIP in peace now.

American dad fucking sucks. It's the same shit as family guy repackaged without random flashbacks. At least it's not Cleveland show.

No it really isn't. American Dad especially in later seasons can be downright hilarious and clever. Roger serves as an amazing character because he basically has a million costumes and Stan is a competent lead who works in the CIA. The Christmas episodes are a favorite of mine.

I know it's the in thing to hate everything Seth MacFarlane but I plead to everyone to give the show a proper try because it really is the best thing to have come out of his name outside of early early family Guy.

Rick and Morty is my new yardstick for funny animated series. And in this brave new world, Family Guy is the most boring shit ever.

I recall quite vividly how confusing watching the first season of FG was. All those quick cuts, it was quite jarring, but at times also very funny. Sadly, all those good moments have been absent for a number of years now.

Funny bits I remember fondly:

I watch American Dad for one reason: Roger

I indeed didnt like Bob Burgers at first but then... Tina Belcher won my heart.

The American Dad's on TBS feel off. I don't know what it is, plus now they always try to shove a "shit" in every episode for no reason other than being on cable.

It is one of my most rewatched shows on netflix.

One of the best episodes is the Vietnam Reenactment on the golf course..

Exactly how I feel. I guess it makes sense since one of the showrunners left right before the move. I force myself to watch the new episodes out of a weird sense of loyalty. The old seasons are infinitely re watchable

Family Guy has been weak ever since Season 7 Ended, and Season 8 had a good episode here and there. Otherwise its been very weak for Season 9 Onwards.

I guess due to Seth having his hands in a lot of projects at once (Cleveland Show for two or so seasons, American Dad going on still, the two Ted films, ect), so the quality of Family Guy going down his is expected sadly.

Still, we got the older seasons still (can watch all of them via Netflix), so that's good at least :).
