[Weekly Software & Hardware Sales] "Mario Kart World" tops the charts for the 10th time! Train driving simulation game "Railway Nippon! RealPro Tokyo-Kanagawa! Tokyu Corporation Edition" also makes the list [8/18-8/24]

Famitsu's sales rankings. This time, we bring you a summary of estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from August 18th to August 24th, 2025 in Japan.

Mario Kart World, in its 12th week since release, sold 30,202 units, making it the top seller for the 10th time. The Previous installment Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also continues to grow in sales, coming in at 4th place, eight years after its release.

In second place was Donkey Kong Country: Bananza and in third place was Minecraft, while in seventh and eighth place were Super Mario Party Jamboree and Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV .

If you own the Nintendo Switch version you can play the latter with an upgrade pass (2,000 yen [tax included]), so it seems that many users decided to buy it in anticipation of eventually purchasing a Nintendo Switch 2.

Among them, one that caught my eye was Railway Nippon! RealPro Tokyo-Kanagawa! Tokyu Corporation Edition, which came in at number 10. This is a simulation game that lets you experience driving a train with powerful live-action footage shot from the driver's seat of an actual train.

This is the third installment in the series, and it features three lines owned by Tokyu Corporation (Toyoko Line, Denentoshi Line, and Oimachi Line).

PS5 DE is even lower this time. Damn, what a fucking mess.

Is Yotei the only game capable of moving the needle for Sony for the rest of the year?

Wasn't GOT doing something in Japan sales? I don't quite remember.

Yeah, I remember hearing that it sold well. This is what a quick Google says.

Ghost of Tsushima sold over 1 million copies in Japan, making it the first foreign, first-party PlayStation game to achieve this milestone since Crash Bandicoot 3 in 1998. This success was considered a great achievement by PlayStation executives, especially given that the Japanese game market is typically dominated by local platforms like Nintendo's Switch. The positive reception also boosted tourism to the real Tsushima Island.

PS4 had a better install base than PS5 from the time GoT launch, right?

I can't say for sure if this game will do any favors. How long AC stay in the charts? This kinda a western take of Japan, right?

Will either do similar or lower than AC:Shadows in Japan, thats my take.

Sales performance like AC Shadows seems reasonable. MH Wilds kinda flopped in Japan so I'm not expecting a miracle here.

Big drop off after Obon. We're in the doldrums of Sunmer now.
How likely is it that the PS5 doesn't sell a million this year?
With a holiday boost I'd say it's possible, but PS5 doesn't always get a holiday boost

It won't move the needle as such, but Dragon Quest 1+2 is also a big release.

Yotei will outsell AC Shadows' lifetime sales in Japan in its first week. It's a much much bigger franchise in Japan than Assassin's Creed.
PS5pro beating PS5 DE is for me the depressing part. Playstation is becaming Xbox in Japan unfortunately.
Why is it depressing for the Pro to sell better than the DE?

Both are DE, but the other is like 3 times the price?

Wasn't selling a cheap all digital the future? For me that the embarrassing part. The vision Sony tried to sell is a failure.

Japan will either get the physical or the best product.

For PlayStation? Did DQ3 move the needle for PS5? I'm not expecting you to dig up numbers, just off the top of your head.

To me that release makes more sense for Switch/Switch 2.
I like digging up numbers!

DQIII did 180k physical at launch on PS5, and went on to become the 2nd biggest selling PS5 game in 2024 (in total sales, so physical and digital).

Unfortunately we can't really tell the impact on hardware sales, since DQIII launched the week after the Pro launched.

I think when PS5 is already targeting people with high levels of disposable income, they are more likely to pay for the best experience.

Sony offered the DE as cheaper option for those who don't care about digital. Quite a few people around the world chose that option.
