What’s the lowest the PS5 has sold and the most the Series has sold in a week? I’m sure someone will that those stats somewhere

Hey now - PSX (The PS2 Pro, not the PS1) sold 100000 in its first week in Japan - and that was like 5Milion* yen adjusted for inflation, so anything's possible 🤷‍♀️

*Ok internet says actually 115000 Yen - but still!!!

Whew, well it was fun while it lasted. Still kind of crazy to me they're basically giving up the Japanese market. They must be counting on growth in markets like Korea & China to make up the difference.

We'll see how well that plays out for them.
Plus straight after the holiday boost, PS4 will get its Monster Hunter World boost.

So in 2-3 months the PS5 should be behind PS4 launch aligned

The current situation in Japan has come from the strength Nintendo has been building for the last two decades, and there's not a lot Sony can do to turn it around.

They've seen they won't get a lot sales volume from the country, and so are prioritising profitability. They are instead betting on sales volume growth in places like China, India and the Middle East, where they have better distribution networks than Nintendo and are building stronger developer relationships with the Hero projects.
Dang, why the Switch bump the last weeks?
Yen situation is likely to be continuing to boost Switch exports. The Direct might have helped a bit too.
Astro bot had a 45%-55% physical to digital split in the UK, if it's digital sales percentage is the same here then it's under 30K which is really actually quite good I think
I think digital could be even higher in Japan given the shortages. Maybe 70%.

It'll be funny if SIE prioritizing profitability in Japan also ends up meaning less profits from Japan, due to lesser hardware sales AND lower software sales, plus less PS+ subscriptions and MTX in that region. Profit squeezing from hardware won't make up for the profits being lost elsewhere, IMO.

As for them wanting to balance that out with growth in markets like China, India, MENA etc. overall I'm glad for the Hero projects initiative, but it's only a matter of time before Nintendo improves their distribution in those same territories. Xbox may be a non-factor in these places, but if Nintendo gets those pipelines improved during Switch 2's time, they can end up being a very capable challenger to PlayStation in those emerging markets as well.

SIE's main benefit is Nintendo's pretty slow in expanding reach in said markets; it took them seemingly forever to start paying attention to markets like Brazil after SEGA made big inroads there during the Mega Drive days, for example.

Astro Bot first week sales comparison with other 3d platformers in this generation

Mario Odyssey - 511k
Kirby and the forgotten land - 380k
Mario 3D world + bowser's fury - 250k

TBF, you're comparing what's to many people a brand new IP (Astro Bot) to the most dominant platformer IP in gaming (Mario). Not a fair comparison.

Also we know Astro Bot was supply-constrained in physical for the launch week, so we'd have to wait until the 2nd week to see what physical demand is really like for the game there. And even so, digital will be a not-insignificant component to its sales in all regions.

What’s the lowest the PS5 has sold and the most the Series has sold in a week? I’m sure someone will that those stats somewhere

Lowest PS5? Probably this week right here TBH (~ 11K)

Highest Xbox? When they released the Diablo 4 bundle (~ 9K).

So a difference of about 2K weekly by those metrics.

I think we should include other examples for fairness:

Switch: Sonic Frontiers - 26,067
PS5: Sonic Frontiers - 11,111
PS4: Crash Bandicoot 4 - 10,437

Out of stock because of the previous month and Sony not restocking before the upcoming price increase in Japan.
They mean Astro out of stock, not PS5.

Bets are on. Astro Bot won't sell another 5k next week. We have seen before how stock shortages kill future game sales in Japan. Sony fucked up.

It's out of stock.

But I'll bite. This is over a week and only in Japan, being in the tens of thousands is a good thing. Not to mention it sold out.

My question is, if you do actually want to see it fail, why?
Digital data. You got that?
You should be embarrassed.

Guys stop coping, nobody cares about Astro in Japan, Sony made a big event for that game in Japan and about 4 people showed up lol

The impact of the PS5 price increase is far over the relative increase in price.
Sales are less than half with a less than 20% increase.
This means that unless they were selling the console at a loss and they wanted to get rid of these losses at all costs, it was a wrong move that did more harm then benefit.
They will be forced to backtrack in a few months.
I like your optimism, but unfortunately I think Sony’s all but given up on Japan.

I'd say you'd be right if Sony were only looking at profitability in Japan.

But I reckon a motivating factor behind the price change is the exports, people in other countries taking advantage of the weak yen to get cheap PS5s (this is something which is affecting Switch too).

So Sony will be hoping that, with the price increase, people will just buy PS5s in their own country instead of from Japan. That way they still get software and subscription revenue, but akso don't lose money on hardware.
As for them wanting to balance that out with growth in markets like China, India, MENA etc. overall I'm glad for the Hero projects initiative, but it's only a matter of time before Nintendo improves their distribution in those same territories. It's definitely possible. We've seen Nintendo overtake Sony in places like Taiwan and South Korea, so they could do the same in other emerging markets too. Furukawa has mentioned Mexico and South East Asia as key growth opportunities.

Depends on how quickly they can get stock out there. It could have quite a soft drop.

Happy to see Pikmin 4 still hanging around. Also this chart bodes very very well for the Super Mario Party franchise. It could have 3 games on the chart all at the same time.

Another remainder that japanese have terrible taste. nintenda trash and gacha garbage that's all they want.

Yup, Japanese gamers can't understand fine art that you can only find with PlayStation, just look at this beautiful sex scene from the last of us for example, i almost cried when i first saw that amazing gameplay and attention to detail, you can even see the sweat shining on Abby's man boobs

Or the creative and fun characters that's lacking "nintenda" games, just look at this beauty lmao

Japanese have terrible taste he said :messenger_tears_of_joy:
