FAST Racing NEO (Wii U) out on Dec 10th in NA and EU for €14.99 / $14.99 / £10.99

Nintendo should give em the F Zero licence cause they're not gonna do anything with it.
People keep saying this, as if you had developers dying to take it. :p

They asked Criterion a few years and they passed, and they're much bigger.

For Shin'en they've said multiple times that they enjoy their freedom. That doesn't mean they wouldn't want it, but the added pressure, expectations would go against whatever they make.

Wow, they could've just reskinned the racing pods and call this game "F-Zero U" and everyone would have eaten it up, deservedly so. Looks amazing!

Sorry for not being up-to-date: is there any chance for this coming to PC?

That's why I wrote "earlier efforts".

I have played Nano Assault Neo and Art of Balance. So that's comparatively new output from them..

Both games seemed to have the right amount of style for me.

If Nano Assault Neo doesn't have it's own style, ResoGun doesn't have as well, imo.

Those games have style for sure.

FAST Racing looks striking and they really struck a good balance of realism and special effects.

I think they should stick to the sci-fi shit and stay away from platformers, a genre that doesn't seem to be in their wheel house.

The game will play nothing like F-Zero, that would be false advertising and piss off people even moreso than they will be pissed off if they expect FAST to be like F-Zero.

I am not a hardcore F-Zero fan (just recently played F-Zero GX), but this looks exactly like a modern F-Zero to me, at least from the videos I've seen in this thread?

Well, there is a bit of a Wipeout vibe there, but we could file that under "advancements".
So what are the key differences that would piss people off?

It's hard to describe.

Just the feel and weight of the crafts in relation to the tracks.

Upon first glance though, you wouldn't be shocked if it was F-Zero GX 2 but Shinen's gameplay in their racers is its own thing for better or worse.

Is there a first person viewpoint?
Can the Pro-Pad be used as the controller?

I have been waiting for this for ages.

Have any other GAFers been playing this over the last week for review? I'm enjoying it, but the absolutely bone-crushing difficulty is really stonewalling me in terms of progress. Anyone else finding this to be the case/have any tips for turning what seem to be impossible odds in my favor? After Subsonic League, it seems like making even one tiny mistake ensures you won't be winning that race. Gah.

Have you tried playing online with other reviewers? I imagine that would be quite a different experience.

Is it true that this game only had like 2 programmers working on it?
Likely. Manfred Linzer and Bernhard Wodok are the guys for technology, while Martin Sauter does the art (though all of them dabble in other areas as well, like Linzer in music etc.), and that's what Shin'en consist of for many of their projects. Then there are additional people contributing more assets (for FAST NEO it's Bjulin and Martin Schjoler for more music). Don't know if that's all for FAST NEO, but may well be.

Don't know how many of them are programmers, but yeah could be. The whole team is 4 people I think and they hired someone for the music. Of those 4 I guess everyone can do most stuff, but 1-2 might have specialized on the programming part.

Definite buy unless it gets all 3s. I was excited at the prospect of this game but it turned out better than I imagined. I see it being one of the top indie selling games and me losing a LOT online.

I really, really doubt it! :p wait just few hours and you'll see

it IS very hard. I've also stated this in the review. I think people should know this, even if in the forums this will be taken as a plus, maybe. But I'd say that it is enjoyable, fully, even "just" at lower difficulty levels.

Are you finding it harder than F-Zero GX?

Yeah - I have been playing it.

It really gets difficult from the second speed league on.. The Subsonic-League is kind of doable..albeit not too easy. As you've said: After Subsonic it already gets pretty challenging, the smallest mistake can make it impossible to catch up with the top-placed drivers...

Nontheless: Online-MP is fun and works pretty much like Mario Kart 8 (you get points for winning - but I don't know if you lose points by losing races.. I haven't lost yet :P). And I like the handling so far - also the sense of speed is absolutely amazing!

I laughed.

Desperate times...

But in all honesty Nintendoland is always good for a dose of arcade fun when needed.

I so much want a new Extreme-G...

Or a remastered 1080/60 Remaster of the first one at least...

After F-Zero and WipEout, I think Extreme-G is the futuristic racer I enjoyed the most. I remember it being fast and I remember being impressed by the loops and stuff in the tracks. Used to rent it all the time.

XG3 was absurdly fast. I loved how you could literally break the sound barrier during gameplay, sonic boom effect and everything.
Loved that too. Breaking the sound barrier was already possible in XG 2. But it was nice to see that feature again in the sequel :)

Yes, yes and ... yes! F-Zero, WipEout and Extreme-G... it's my personal "Trio Infernale" of SciFi-Racing.

The dark and futuristic track design of the first Extreme G, the weapons, especially the perfect racing soundtrack, and even the multiplayer... it was just awesome!

Hate to be that guy, but when are we getting the OT?

If the same game got reskinned as an FZero installment we would be asked to fork 60 instead of 15, and there would be shitty amiibo stuff blocking content already in the disc/download.

Yeah, no thanks.

Edit: and for my money Quantum Redshift is the closest thing anyone got to recreating the awesomeness of FZero and Wipeout.

It's a tough weird game. AI is unpredictable. I can't tell if it's rubber banding or what. I have managed to 1st place every cup in the first two speed classes, but the final one is ridiculous.

It's a hard game, and the floatiness of it compared to F-Zero is a bit of a turnoff. You really do need to break on turns. Ultimately, it's about course memorization.

If people thought GX was hard, they're in for a shock. Then again, I was never the highest level GX player, but I did find all the cups on all speeds to be pretty doable and fun. I dunno, comparisons to this and F-Zero fall short after a while, it's its own game. It does get the feeling of speed right, though!

Ehm... when you compare F-Zero (GX) with FAST Racing Neo, you definitely see the difference between a 60 bucks game and a 15 bucks game.

That does not mean that FAST Racing is lacking content. It's absolutely amazing what Shin'en has put into it... I could never have imagined, that this is a 15 [insert currency] game. 16 Tracks, Online-MP for 8 players, Local-MP for 4 players, Time Attack (beat the Dev Ghosts ffs!!) and, as I said, an extreme sense of speed paired with a good handling and easy working gameplay mechanics. ... it's absolutely worth it.

Besides the sense of speed (and Online-MP), you get more of everything in a F-Zero. If there would be a new F-Zero.... jesus christ DO IT Nintendo...
